Best Facial at Home

There’s no doubt that professional facials are one of the best ways to achieve clear, healthy, youthful skin. Plus, having a spa day can be a fun, relaxing experience. But what if you don’t have the time (or money) to get regular professional facials? Fortunately, there are many different skin care products and even facial kits that you can use at home to improve your complexion. If you want to try a facial at home, there’s a few things you need to know first. Keep reading to learn how to do a facial at home, as well as the best at home facial products.

What does a facial do?

A facial is essentially a multi-step skin treatment that involves cleansing, exfoliating, steaming, clearing pores, and moisturizing. There are tons of different facials that you can get, each designed for a specific type of skin or concern. Below are examples of different types of facials you can get:

  • Deep cleansing facial
  • Acne prevention facial
  • Anti-aging facial
  • Brightening facial
  • Enzyme facial
  • Oxygen facial
  • Light therapy facial
  • Microcurrent facial
  • Microdermabrasion facial
  • Lymphatic drainage facial
  • Acupuncture facial
  • Gemstone facial

As you can see from the list above, some facials (like microcurrent and lymphatic drainage facials) must be performed by a professional, such as an esthetician or dermatologist. But don’t worry, it’s possible to achieve great results from a facial at home.

At home facial steps

  1. Patch test
Whether you bought at new facial product or you’re creating a DIY facial with ingredients in your home, always perform a patch test on a small, inconspicuous area of skin first. This is especially important for DIY facial recipes that include natural ingredients. Some natural ingredients, like Aloe vera and avocado, are beneficial to use on the skin. However, other natural ingredients like lemon juice and baking soda, can actually do more harm than good. If the patch test produces a rash or other reaction, do not continue with that product.
  2. Perform the facial before bed
It is best to perform your facial at night before you go to bed because this is the time your skin repairs itself. Providing skin with active ingredients from your facial will encourage repair and rejuvenation. Ensure that you have a freshly washed pillowcase to sleep on after your facial. Allot about one hour for your facial.
  3. Remove makeup
Before you begin your facial at home, remove all makeup with a fragrance-free, alcohol-free makeup remover. The active ingredients in the facial won’t be able to penetrate your skin if you have makeup on. Botanical oils, such as sweet almond oil or jojoba oil, are very effective makeup removers.
  4. Cleanse + exfoliate
The cleansing step of the facial will clear away any remaining makeup, dirt, excess oil, and any other impurities that may have accumulated on the skin during the day, which allows oxygen to be delivered to the skin. Oxygen plays a critical role in the skin’s repair and detoxification processes overnight. Cleansing will also allow other active ingredients in the following steps to better penetrate the skin. You can also exfoliate during the cleansing step with a Clarisonic brush or other type of skin care brush.
  5. Steam
After cleansing, it’s time to steam your face. You can use hot water in a large bowl; just keep your face 6-plus inches away from the bowl to avoid burns. Put a clean towel over your head and lean over the bowl for two minutes at a time. You can also buy a small countertop home steamer that does all the work for you. Steaming increases blood flow into the skin while allowing your body to perspire and release toxins. It also loosens dead skin cells, as well as dirt and oil plugs in pores.
  6. Apply mask or serum
Applying a mask or serum immediately after steaming will allow the ingredients to penetrate deeper into the skin. You can use an activated charcoal or clay mask if your goal is to get rid of blackheads or excess oil. However, if you have dry or sensitive skin, you may want to skip the mask and apply a serum. Choose a serum based on your specific skin care needs. For instance, if you want to brighten your complexion, consider a vitamin C serum. If you are concerned about fine lines and wrinkles, try a retinol serum. If your skin is lacking moisture, a hyaluronic acid serum is likely your best bet.
  7. Relax during your facial
One drawback with doing a facial at home is that many people forget to relax! Try not to multitask during your facial. Set aside time to enjoy the experience. You can meditate or practice deep breathing during this time to promote relaxation while the facial improves the health of your skin. Other ideas for relaxation include placing chilled cucumber slices over your eyes, lighting a candle, or listening to music.
