Do you know the benefits of using skin care products that contain Matrixyl 3000? Matrixyl 3000 is a type of synthetic peptide used in skin care for its ability to stimulate collagen production, which results in anti-aging effects. If you’ve never heard of Matrixyl 3000 or don’t even know what a peptide is, this article is for you. Read below to learn all about peptides, their role in skin health, the benefits of Matrixyl 3000, and the best products with Matrixyl 3000.

What are peptides?

Before we discuss the benefits of Matrixyl 3000, it’s important to have a good understanding of peptides. In simple terms, peptides are fragments of proteins. Peptides are formed when amino acids bond together. For example, when two amino acids are joined together by a single bond it is called a dipeptide. Three linked amino acids are a tripeptide, followed by tetrapeptides, etc. You may know that proteins are composed of amino acids linked together, too. So what’s the difference between a peptide and a protein? While they are both made of the same building blocks (amino acids), it all comes down to size. Peptides typically contain 50 or fewer amino acids. Proteins consist of 50 or more amino acids and can be made of polypeptides (a long peptide chain).

The role of peptides in skin health

There are naturally occurring peptides in the skin that are generated from extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins (e.g. collagen, elastin, fibronectin) and from antimicrobial peptide (AMP) precursor proteins. Peptides that are liberated by partial proteolysis (breakdown) of ECM proteins are called matrikines. Matrikines regulate cell activities through cell signaling. For example, when the collagen protein is degraded, matrikines send signals to fibroblasts to produce new collagen. Collagen is involved in wound healing, and is also responsible for keeping the skin strong and firm. Without matrikines and other peptides, the skin will start to lose firmness. Over time, this results in the appearance of wrinkles, texture changes, and skin that doesn’t bounce back as it once did.

Since matrikines have the ability to increase the production of collagen, elastin, and other macromolecules in the ECM, synthetic peptides have been created to mimic these effects. Numerous skin care products incorporate these synthetic peptides to provide anti-aging effects, including reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, improving skin texture, and increasing skin firmness. And as you can probably guess, Matrixyl 3000 is one of these peptides.

What is Matrixyl 3000?

Matrixyl 3000 is a trademarked peptide composition developed by Sederma Inc. in France. It is the first anti-aging ingredient based on the matrikine peptide technology. Matrixyl 3000 is composed of the matrikines palmitoyl tripeptide-1 and palmitoyl tetrapeptide-7. These two peptides work synergistically to restore and maintain the skin’s youthful appearance by signaling to cells to produce more collagen. Numerous studies have proven the anti-aging and anti-wrinkle efficacy of Matrixyl 3000.

For example, a clinical study involving female participants demonstrated that after just 2 months of treatment with Matrixyl 3000, the area occupied by deep wrinkles was reduced by 45%, and the skin’s tonicity increased by nearly 20%. In a separate 2 month clinical study conducted on a panel of men, the anti-wrinkle efficacy of Matrixyl 3000 was confirmed. As the wrinkle volume decreases (-17.1%), the spread angle increases (+5.4%), which leads to a reduction of the surface occupied by deep wrinkles of nearly 30%.

Another peptide complex by Sederma Inc. is Matrixyl synthe’6. It is composed of palmitoyl tripeptide-38, a peptide derived from the tripeptide KMK naturally found in collagen VI and laminin. In-vitro studies have found Matrixyl synthe’6 to have a matrikine-like effect that stimulates the synthesis of collagen I, II, IV, fibronectin, hyaluronic acid, and laminin 5.

The best Matrixyl 3000 products

The Ordinary Matrixyl 10% + HA
The Ordinary Matrixyl 10% + HA is a high strength peptide formulation that features two generations of Matrixyl (Matrixyl 3000 and Matrixyl synthe’6 ) at a combined concentration of 10% by weight. Both peptide complexes are combined in a specialized hyaluronic acid delivery system. Hyaluronic acid is a type of glycosaminoglycan (sugar molecule) that attracts moisture from the environment and draws that moisture into the skin’s upper layers. In fact, hyaluronic acid has the ability to attract and hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water. Hyaluronic acid can help to improve moisture retention and may help other ingredients to perform better. Overall, The Ordinary Matrixyl 10% + HA is a high strength peptide formulation that can help to reduce the look of static and dynamic wrinkles.

Formulyst Anti-Wrinkle Peptide Serum
Formulyst Anti-Wrinkle Peptide Serum uses Multi-Peptide Technology to combine six rejuvenating peptides into one formula. In addition to Matrixyl 3000, this serum contains the peptides, acetyl hexapeptide-8, pentapeptide-18, dipeptide diaminobutyroyl benzylamide diacetate, and acetyl octapeptide-3. All of these peptides have a unique mechanism of action, and they work together to help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. The peptides in the Formulyst Anti-Wrinkle Peptide Serum are combined in a base of several potent hydrating ingredients, including glycerin, Chondrus Crispus extract, and sodium hyaluronate (the salt form of hyaluronic acid).

Alternatives to Matrixyl 3000

As you can see, the anti-aging and anti-wrinkle efficacy of Matrixyl 3000 is very well known. But this single ingredient only contains two peptides, and there are numerous synthetic peptides that have been developed for topical application. You may find it beneficial to combine products with Matrixyl 3000 and other peptides products. Below are a few of our favorite products that contain other types of peptides to provide anti-aging benefits.

Formulyst Advanced Repair Serum
Formulyst Advanced Repair Serum is specifically formulated to help optimize skin hydration, as well as visibly plump and smooth the appearance of wrinkles. This serum contains a Peptide Complex of acetyl octapeptide-3 and dipeptide diaminobutyroyl benzylamide diacetate, which are both classified as neuropeptides. Acetyl octapeptide-3, also known as SNAP-8, works by limiting the ability of neurotransmitters to activate movement in your facial muscles, for example, when forming facial expressions such as smiling or frowning. By inhibiting the nerves that cause facial muscles to contract, subtle facial expressions are limited and wrinkles are subsequently reduced. Diaminobutyroyl benzylamide diacetate blocks the body’s uptake of Na+, which in turn causes the facial muscles to relax and prevent the formation of expression lines (wrinkles). As you can see, the peptides in Formulyst Advanced Repair Serum help to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles through a different mechanism than Matrixyl 3000.

Formulyst Pro-Collagen Serum
Formulyst Pro-Collagen Serum is a lightweight, restorative serum that is specifically formulated for aging skin. There are two different peptides in this serum: tripeptide-10 citrulline and tripeptide-1. Tripeptide-10 citrulline mimics the protein decorin, which plays a role in the regulation of collagen fibers. Tripeptide-1 is a signal peptide known to work with copper in skin to visibly repair substances that have begun to deteriorate due to age and sun exposure. Thanks to these two peptides, the Formulyst Pro-Collagen Serum may help to stimulate new collagen production, resulting in a more youthful complexion.

And don’t forget a good night’s rest. Try not to sleep on your face in the pillow because gravity will pull it down. Sleep on your back or lightly to the side. Crucial is to keep the hormones balanced. A hormonal imbalance will defeat any good skin care regime that you have. There are bio-identical creams available. I have a good estriol cream that has worked wonders on my aging neck.

I have practically taken 10 years off my face by doing the following. Increased water consumption. Carrot, apple broccoli, spinach and lemon juice(Juice in juicer) The trampoline increased my circulation 10 fold. A visit to the Esthetician where I had a micro dermabrasion followed by glycolic peel. I use Vit C serum/hyaluronic acid, retinol cream and vitamin B3/B5 serum all for about $27. And at nights I put pure aloe vera gel on my face and slept with it. I also do face exercises freelance. The difference is outstanding. I have a much clearer softer and firmer look. The creams alone are not gonna do it people. And don’t forget lots of sunscreen. Use products with glycerin and hyaluronic acid. They are cheap and highly effective. Lots of all those big names that we cannot pronounce are there to deceive in order to pump up price. Next time Im gonna try pure gelatin as a facial mask. After all isin’t that protein? For now I use eggs and the tightening is exceptional.

    Hi Tamara
I would like to know where you can get matrixyl 3000 in a cream. This is the replacement or upgraded version of matrixyl but I cannot find any creams that contain matrixyl 3000. If you can make a skin care cream with matrixyl 3000 I will buy it from you.
