Marionette Lines: Causes and Treatments

As we age, dealing with marionette lines becomes a common frustration for many individuals. If you’re not sure what they are, these lines run from the corners of the mouth to the chin, and are usually visible in aging skin. The problem with marionette lines is that they tend to show emotion, even if we are not trying to express anything. Unfortunately, this may lead others to believe that you are sad or angry, leading to misunderstandings and, in some cases, embarrassment. Because marionette lines can be so prominent, they are a common complaint addressed by dermatologists and skin care specialists.

Why Marionette Lines Occur

While not everyone gets marionette lines, there are some common reasons why they occur. As we age, the ligaments near the chin and mouth loosen. Fat deposits in the face also begin to deplete, creating hollowness under the skin. As these issues become exacerbated with age, many people notice sagging skin, which is responsible for creating the lines. Sadly, there is no real way to prevent marionette lines if you are genetically predisposed to them, but viable treatment options are available.

Marionette Lines vs. Wrinkles

Marionette lines are different than wrinkles because they don’t just make you look older, but can cause the face to look sad or angry. The other types of wrinkles on face or neck do not have nearly as much effect. For example, the smile lines that run from the nose to the edges of the mouth don’t really change your emotional appearance. Crow’s feet and lip wrinkles do not make the face look like its frowning or upset. Marionette lines, on the other hand, can get quite annoying.

Treatment with a Face Lift

One common treatment for marionette lines is the face lift, especially for deep lines. Most people who get facelifts to treat marionette lines tend to do so as part of a more comprehensive procedures, such as tightening the loose skin on the neck and jaw line. New face lift procedures include tiny incision and short recovery periods, although it is still a surgical procedure that carries risk of infection. Marionette face lift procedures are different from a regular facelift in that it doesn’t make the face appear surgically altered, because there is no change in the appearance of skin around the eyes or cheeks.

Topical Creams

If you prefer not to have incisions or to go through recovery, topical creams may treat mild instances of marionette lines. The topical treatments usually include retinol as well as collagen, to increase elasticity and prevent sagging skin. Other topical creams include alpha-hydroxy acid, which attracts moisture to the surface to make the skin plumper. Some people may pair topical treatments with facial exercises to tighten skin. However, no topical skin treatment can completely remove marionette lines, and should be considered with realistic expectations.

Dermabrasion and Chemical Peels

Many adults dealing with marionette lines turn to exfoliating procedures to reduce the appearance of lines by removing dead skin. Dermabrasion and chemical peels are two frequently used treatments that can effectively slough off dead skin cells without significant side effects. Other than skin irritation and peeling, these two treatments do not tend to produce significant problems. However, your individual skin chemistry is unique, and you are encouraged to proceed very carefully with any such procedures, as long term skin discoloration may occur.
