The story behind Mad Hippie Skin Care

When considering natural skin care products, some consumers may come across a brand called Mad Hippie. Founded in Portland, Oregon, the company aims to create natural skin care products with the smallest possible footprint on the environment. As “hippies on a mission”, Mad Hippie Skin Care wants to spread real beauty around the world; the beauty of love, health, self-confidence, optimism, and community. Further, the manufacturer even uses soy ink to reduce environmental impact, and donates $1 from every sale to The Wildlife Conservation Network. While the goal of reducing impact on the environment is very commendable, you probably also want to know whether or not these products will be a good addition to your skin care routine! Find out more about these natural skin care products in our Mad Hippie Skin Care review!

What are the Best Skin Care Products of 2020?

What are the best selling Mad Hippie Skin Care products?

Mad Hippie offers consumers a variety of skin care products to choose from, including cleansers, cleansing oils, creams, serums, mists, masks, eye creams, and more. If you’re stuck on where to get started with Mad Hippie, you may want to consider trying these best selling Mad Hippie Skin Care products.

First up is the Mad Hippie Vitamin C Serum, which has been called “a miracle worker” by Allure and “magic” by Marie Claire. This best selling Mad Hippie Skin Care product combines vitamin C with several other antioxidants, such as ferulic acid and vitamin E, to improve the overall appearance of the skin.

Another best selling Mad Hippie Skin Care product is the Triple C Night Cream, which gets its name from the three different forms of vitamin C in this formula. In addition, the Mad Hippie Triple C Night Cream contains 19 active ingredients that are said to work synergistically in order to bring you dramatically brighter, healthier, and smoother looking skin.

The final best selling Mad Hippie Skin Care product we’d like to discuss in the brand’s Vitamin A Serum. This serum contains a unique form of vitamin A (we’ll discuss further in the next section) in order to help reduce the appearance of lines, wrinkles, and discoloration. The Mad Hippie Vitamin A Serum also features several hydrating ingredients, like sodium hyaluronate, oat beta glucan, aloe vera, and more.

What are the key ingredients in Mad Hippie Skin Care?

What’s great about Mad Hippie Skin Care is that the brand really does a good job of incorporating a wide variety of beneficial ingredients into their product formulations. They use many unique botanical extracts and oils, such as konjac root, cloudberry fruit extract, blackcurrant seed oil, acai extract, reishi mushroom extract, and chlorella extract, just to name a few. Mad Hippie also incorporates many tried-and-true anti-aging ingredients into their formulas, such as vitamins A, C, and E and peptides.

Plus, Mad Hippie recognizes that what’s not in their formulations is just as important as what’s in them. Because of this, there are a number of ingredients that you will never see on the back of their labels. These include parabens, synthetic fragrance, dyes, petrochemicals, PEGs, SLS and other “nasty” additives.

As you can probably imagine, vitamin C is one of the key ingredients you can expect to find in both the Mad Hippie Vitamin C Serum and the Mad Hippie Triple C Night Cream. Rather than using pure vitamin C (ascorbic acid), which is very unstable and prone to oxidation, the brand uses several different vitamin C derivatives. Mad Hippie Vitamin C Serum contains sodium ascorbyl phosphate, while the Triple C Night Cream includes tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate, magnesium ascorbyl phosphate, and ascorbyl glucoside. Once absorbed into the skin, all of these derivatives are converted to ascorbic acid.

Ascorbic acid provides numerous benefits to the skin. First, it’s a potent antioxidant that helps the skin to combat the damaging effects of free radicals, the unstable molecules that contribute to the formation of premature wrinkles and fine lines on the skin. Ascorbic acid also has the ability to stimulate collagen production, decrease the appearance of dark spots, and improve uneven skin tone.

Lastly, we wanted to discuss the unique form of vitamin A in the Mad Hippie Vitamin A Serum: hydroxypinacolone retinoate (HPR). HPR is an ester of all-trans retinoic acid, and unlike other retinoic acid derivatives, it does not need to be converted to retinoic acid to work. Rather, it binds directly to the retinoid receptors of the skin cells. HPR is said to provide the same benefits of retinol, but without the irritation. Thus, this ingredient should be able to minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, improve uneven skin tone, restore skin firmness, and shrink the appearance of enlarged pores.

Where are Mad Hippie Skin Care products sold?

Mad Hippie Skin Care products are sold on the brand’s website, as well as third party sellers such as Amazon and Ulta. However, the brand warns to always be careful buying Mad Hippie products from unauthorized third party sellers on sites because they have found counterfeits and many expired, damaged, and opened products being sold. Mad Hippie Skin Care products are also sold in numerous physical locations across the United States and Canada. The brand has a store locator on their website so that you can find a location that sells Mad Hippie Skin Care products near you.

What is the Mad Hippie return policy?

Mad Hippie allows consumers to try their products risk-free thanks to their return policy, which states, “We are so confident that you will love Mad Hippie that if for any reason you are not completely satisfied, return your purchased products, full or empty, within 60 days of purchase from an authorized seller and we will refund 100% of your money.”

Is Mad Hippie cruelty free?

Mad Hippie is cruelty free. The brand does not test finished products or ingredients on animals, and neither do their suppliers or any third-parties. In addition, Mad Hippie does not sell their products where animal testing is required by law.

Mad Hippie Skin Care reviews

Mad Hippie Skin Care reviews on the brand’s website are extremely positive, with nearly all products receiving 4 or 5 star ratings. Positive Mad Hippie Skin Care reviews for the Vitamin C Serum mention that this serum helps with acne and acne scars while promoting soft, glowing, dewy skin. Reviews for the Mad Hippie Triple C Night Cream mention that it is really great for dry, mature skin, but that it may clog pores and cause breakouts if you have acne prone skin. Mad Hippie Skin Care reviews for the Vitamin A Serum mention that it helps to reduce the appearance of pores, fine lines, and wrinkles.

What are some alternatives to Mad Hippie Skin Care?

We like that Mad Hippie Skin Care combines organic natural ingredients with safe synthetic ingredients like peptides in many of their products. One thing we noticed, though, is that the only ingredient used in Mad Hippie products to help brighten the skin and fade dark spots is vitamin C. While vitamin C is definitely an excellent ingredient for hyperpigmentation, there are so many other ingredients that can also help to fade those pesky dark spots. If you’re struggling with hyperpigmentation and uneven skin tone, we’d like to recommend Formulyst’s Dark Spot Solutions.

Dark Spot Solutions is formulated with HyWhite – an alpha linolenic acid (ALA) that helps to lighten the appearance of dark spots and visibly improve the uniformity of the skin color. This serum also contains a lightweight molecular hyaluronic acid, which instantly helps to improve skin hydration. If you’ve tried a vitamin C serum in the past without any improvement, we’d definitely recommend considering Formulyst Dark Spot Solutions.

Mad Hippie Cream Cleanser Review

Mad Hippie Cream Cleanser is an all-natural cleanser that removes makeup and other impurities, leaving the skin feeling soft and looking bright. It is formulated to be mildly acidic in order to support the skin’s natural pH (typically about 5.5) and preserve the skin’s protective oils. Mad Hippie Cream Cleanser is also formulated with antioxidants and hydrating oils that leave the skin soft and smooth while gently washing away dirt and impurities. It contains several emollients, such as sesame oil, shea butter, jojoba oil, squalene, and macadamia oil.

Mad Hippie Cream Cleanser also contains green tea leaf extract, which contains the polyphenol epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). EGCG is a potent antioxidant and helps the skin combat free radicals, the unstable molecules that contribute to the formation of premature wrinkles and fine lines on the skin. Interestingly, the Mad Hippie Cream Cleanser formula does not contain surfactants like most cleansers do. The oils in this cleanser will help to grab onto oil on the skin since like attracts like, however, those with oily and acne-prone skin may feel that this cleanser does not clear pores enough.

INGREDIENTS

Mad Hippie Hydrating Nutrient Mist Review

Mad Hippie Hydrating Nutrient Mist is an effervescent blend of antioxidants and hydrating essentials that is said to leave your skin feeling soft and supple. One of the key ingredients in this mist is hesperidin, a bioflavonoid glycoside found in citrus fruits, such as oranges, lemons, and limes. Hesperidin has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, and has also been shown to improve circulation and help reduce the appearance of skin discoloration. Another key ingredient in this mist is sodium PCA a naturally occuring humectant that functions as a hydrating agent and a skin-replenishing ingredient. Another humectant in the Mad Hippie Hydrating Nutrient Mist is sodium hyaluronate, the salt form of hyaluronic acid, which works to moisturize the skin while reducing the appearance of wrinkles.

Mad Hippie Hydrating Nutrient Mist can help to promote a brighter complexion thanks to sodium ascorbyl phosphate, a stable precursor of ascorbic acid (pure vitamin C). Ascorbic acid is a potent antioxidant that can protect the skin from free radicals. In addition, ascorbic acid can decrease the appearance of dark spots and improve uneven skin tone by inhibiting tyrosinase, a key enzyme involved in the production of melanin. There are several more powerful antioxidant ingredients in the Mad Hippie Hydrating Nutrient Mist, including resveratrol, green tea, and pomegranate seed extract. A unique ingredient in this mist is Pinus Strobus (white pine) bark extract, which naturally aids in skin hydration while working to reduce the appearance of skin discoloration. Overall, Mad Hippie Hydrating Nutrient Mist is packed with antioxidants, hydrating ingredients, and skin-brightening ingredients that should improve the overall appearance of your skin.

Mad Hippie Antioxidant Facial Oil Review

Mad Hippie Antioxidant Facial Oil is a preservative-free antioxidant oil that is said to hydrate and protect the skin. One of the key ingredients is organic argan oil, which provides instant, non-comedogenic hydration to the skin while its naturally occurring triterpenoids work to reduce the appearance of scars. Containing over 80% essential fatty acids, argan oil is well known to moisturize and revitalize the skin. Another key ingredient in the Mad Hippie Antioxidant Facial Oil is sea buckthorn berry, which is rich in vitamins A, B, C, D, E, K, P, carotenoids, flavonoids, phenols, folic acid, and fatty acids. All of the components help to nourish and protect the skin.

In addition, many of these extracts are rich in vitamin C, which can have a brightening effect on the skin while helping to fade dark spots. A final key ingredient to point out in the Mad Hippie Antioxidant Facial Oil is hemp seed oil. Rich in omegas 3, 6 and 9, as well as antioxidants, hemp seed oil provides the skin with instant moisture and replenishment.

INGREDIENTS

Mad Hippie Exfoliating Serum Review

Mad Hippie Exfoliating Serum is an alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA) based serum that is said to reduce the appearance of skin discoloration and wrinkles. This serum contains two AHAs: glycolic acid derived from sugar cane and lactic acid derived from fermented beet sugar. AHAs exfoliate the skin by targeting corneocytes (dead skin cells) in a process called corneocyte desquamation. By enhancing their breakdown and increasing the separation of skin cells, the rate of cell turnover is increased, leading to smoother, more radiant skin.

In addition to these exfoliating ingredients, you’ll find several other beneficial ingredients in the Mad Hippie Exfoliating Serum. For instance, apple stem cells (PhytoCellTec) have been proven to reverse signs of aging in fibroblasts, help skin cells maintain the capacity to build new tissues, and provide an anti-wrinkle effect on crow’s feet. Another key ingredient is gigawhite, which is a blend of 6 organically grown alpine plants that reduce the appearance of skin discoloration. This serum also aids in hydrating the skin due to sodium hyaluronate, the salt form of hyaluronic acid. Sodium hyaluronate has been shown to have better skin penetrating capabilities than hyaluronic acid alone. It draws moisture into the skin while temporarily reducing the appearance of wrinkles. Lastly, the Mad Hippie Exfoliating Serum contains several types of antioxidants, such as white tea and goji berry.

INGREDIENTS

Mad Hippie Vitamin A Serum

Mad Hippie has been one of the most talked about green beauty brands to emerge in the last few years. Not only are their formulas exceptionally well crafted, but their product are also fairly affordable in comparison to most green beauty brands. But do their active ingredient-centered formulas compare with traditional and luxury products? Today, we’re looking specifically at their vitamin A serum to find out. So without further adieu, let’s get started!

Who is the Mad Hippie Vitamin A Serum For?

The Mad Hippie Vitamin A Serum is suitable for all skin types, although there are a few things to keep in mind. Since this this a vitamin A or retinol serum, there is a chance you may experience irritation during the first month or so of use. Additionally, this product does contain coconut oil, which is fairly comedogenic, so if you are prone to clogged pores, this may not be the right formula for you.

Retinol Remix

Retinol is one of the most well researched ingredients in skincare. And with that comes alot of information to consider before you decide to incorporate a retinol-based product into your routine. The Mad Hippie Vitamin A Serum contains an up and coming form of retinol known as hydroxypinacolone retinoate. But before we can get into how this form works, we need to understand retinol and it’s many derivatives a little bit better.

While retinol is the most common way we reference this ingredient, the actual active is known as retinoic acid. Retinoic acid requires no conversion in order to be used by the skin, making it the most effective option. But retinoic acid is only available with a prescription from your dermatologist. Even then, retinoic acid has some serious downsides to consider. Retinoic acid, even at low, controlled doses, can be extremely sensitizing. Most users experience between 3-6 months of retinization, which is an adjust phase. During this phase, you may experience increased sensitivity, increased dryness, and increased acne, as well as peeling or flaking depending on your skin type.

Many people choose not to start with a retinoic acid treatment like tretinoin because of these troublesome side effects. The next tier of retinoic-acid based treatments is more common retinol. Retinol can be found in many over the counter products. It still offers all of the benefits of retinoic acid, in a less potent, less irritating form.

Finally, the last tier of retinoic-acid based ingredients are retinol-esters. This is an even weaker form of retinoic acid, with even less irritation. Because these product is much weaker, traditional formulas can take a significantly longer time to show visible results on the skin. That said however, we’re starting to see some forms, namely HPR or hydropenicalone retinoate, which seem to offer the best of both worlds. The Mad Hippie Vitamin A Serum utilizes this ingredient in order to give you all of the benefits of a higher strength retinol or retinoic acid, while also severely reducing the amount of irritation that you’re likely to experience.

Formula Focus

The Mad Hippie Vitamin A Serum features a number of active ingredients and botanical extracts in order to create a beneficial serum. The base of this product starts of with water, aloe vera juice, potassium cetyl phosphate, glycerin and oat beta-glucans. Aloe vera juice is an excellent humectant as well as skin soother that is excellent for those of you who have sensitive skin. Potassium cetyl phosphate is commonly used as a surfactant, but in this formula, it’s most likely used as an emulsified to blend together to oil and water based ingredients. Glycerin is an incredibly common ingredient in skincare formulations, as it acts as an excellent humectant and lightweight hydrator. Finally, oat beta-glucans are an excellent skin soother, and have also been shown to reduce the appearance of wrinkles.

Along with HPR, the retinoic-acid based star ingredient, we also have a number of ingredients that support and boost this formulas efficacy. This includes phytoceramides and hyaluronic acid. Phytoceramides aid in moisture retention and are vital for maintaining healthy skin barrier function, while hyaluronic acid helps to effectively hydrate the skin. Since retinoids are known for increasing dryness during the adjustment phase, these moisturizing and hydrating ingredients help to effectively combat these symptoms while your skin adjusts.

How to Use The Mad Hippie Vitamin A Serum

In order to get the most out of this retinol-based serum, we recommend using this serum once a day, preferably as part of your evening routine. Since retinol can make your skin more sensitive to UV rays and sun damage, we highly recommend you wear a sunscreen every day to keep your skin protected.

Review Recap

This serum has been highlighted in several media publications, and continued to be well reviewed on their website and through other retailers. On the Mad Hippie website, the Vitamin A Serum currently has 29 reviews and an overall rating of 5 out of 5 stars. Many reviewers noticed smoother healthier looking skin after incorporating this product into their skincare routine. But we’d love to hear from you! Have you tried this Vitamin A Serum? Mad Hippie Vitamin C Serum Review

If you’re looking for a detour for traditional drugstore skincare, Mad Hippie might be exactly what you’re looking for. As the name would suggest, the company is quite rooted in their commitment to cruelty free beauty, natural ingredients and environmental stewardship. With that said however, this brand does not turn their back on science either. Walking the fine line between the all-natural and all-chemical skincare debate, this brand cherry picks the most effective and well researched ingredients and builds clean formulas around them. So today, we’re getting into all of the nitty gritty details about the brand, their best selling products and the formula behind them in this Mad Hippie Vitamin C Serum review.

What are the Best Skin Care Products of 2020?

Behind The Brand

Mad Hippie combines some of the most well-known and well-researched chemical compounds with all natural ingredients to create products that are both effective and gentle. You’ll see some of the same anti-acne and anti-aging ingredients that you’d find in luxury brands like retinol, vitamin C, peptides like matrixyl and more.

But while all the good is included from the scientific side of skincare, they’ve eliminated any of the bad. As fierce believers in animal and environmental conservation and protection, Mad Hippie is completely vegan and cruelty-free. Along with that, for every web sale, they donate $1 to a charity of choice (currently they’re working with Save the Elephants). The company continues to stick to its roots and provide quality, natural products that come from and support nature.

Potent Products

While there are several products within this range, the fan favorites include the Vitamin C Serum as well as the Vitamin A Serum. If you are making the transition to vegan, cruelty-free or all natural products, it can be hard to find replacements for your typical retinol or vitamin C based serums. To help make this transition easier, Mad Hippie has created more natural versions of these skincare staples.

Vitamin C Serum Of all the products in the Mad Hippie range, their Vitamin C is by far the most well known. With a vitamin C derivative, vitamin E and ferulic acid, as well as hyaluronic acid, this serum is a great option for those who are looking to lighten hyperpigmentation and increase radiance.

Vitamin A Serum Vitamin A, also known as retinol, is one of the very few ingredients that’s been proven as an effective treatment against aging. The Vitamin A Serum from Mad Hippie includes a relatively new form of Vitamin A as well as ceramides and hyaluronic acid to moisturize. Those first starting retinol treatments sometimes experience irritation, so these moisturizing and soothing ingredients help to reduce adverse reactions.

Inside The Ingredients

Looking specifically at the vitamin C serum, the Mad Hippie team designed the formula to be as effective and potent as possible, while not compromising on the ingredients. You won’t find any parabens, sulfates, phthalates or preservatives in this formula as well. What you will find though is a unique blend of three ingredients that work together to double the efficacy of traditional vitamin C. These include:

Vitamin C Now, the vitamin C in Mad Hippie products is actually an esther. The purest form of vitamin C, also known as Ascorbic Acid, can be difficult to formulate with due to its instability and the required silicones and preservatives to combat oxidation. Due to these conditions, Mad Hippie’s vitamin C serum uses Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate instead of pure vitamin C. In most cases, this ester of vitamin C is comparable to Ascorbic Acid, there is not enough research on humans yet to determine if this ingredient does penetrate into the deeper layers of the skin. With that in mind, if you’re trying to use this serum for acne and radiance, this is a great option, as those conditions occur on the surface of the skin.

Vitamin E The ‘gold standard’ for the best vitamin C serums is actually a cocktail of three active ingredients: vitamin C, vitamin E and ferulic acid. These three ingredients work together to form a triple threat against anti-aging, as it stimulates collagen production and boosts the protection of your daily SPF, making it four times more effective. This protects against sun damage and free radicals, which are two of the biggest culprits of premature aging. And that doesn’t even begin to scratch the surface of what each ingredient in these serum does on it’s own. Vitamin E for example, even without these two other superstars, is an excellent anti-aging ingredient, as it hydrates, plumps and reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Ferulic Acid Rounding out this formula, ferulic acid acts as a powerful antioxidant, which helps to protect the skin against free radical damage. Free radicals are responsible for most of the negative effects that we start to see on our skin as we get older. In the simplest definition, free radicals are atoms all around us that are missing an electron. In an attempt to find an electron, these molecules attempt to snag an extra electron from our skin. When they succeed, they’re responsible for darkening sun spots, loose or saggy skin, wrinkles, and there is even new evidence to show that free radicals can cause acne. Antioxidants like ferulic acid neutralize the effect of free radicals when consumed orally or applied topically, as they can donate an electron to any free radicals that come looking for electrons on your skin.

The most common feedback that is mentioned in Mad Hippie reviews and comments was that this serum caused a brightening and glowing effect on the complexion.
