As the saying goes, necks don’t lie. The neck and decolletage are some of the first areas to show the signs of aging, such as crepey skins, wrinkles and sun spots. It is also a place that people neglect to take care of, whether that is with moisturizer or daily application of sunscreen. One product that claims to firm up sagging jawlines and necks is Dr. Nicholas Perricone’s Cold Plasma Sub-D. You may have seen an infomercial for this product, but what exactly is Cold Plasma Sub-D, does it work, and is it right for you?
What Is Cold Plasma Sub D?
Cold Plasma Sub-D is a cream that was launched in 2009, and promises to deliver firmer, more youthful looking skin as well as give a more defined looking jaw. The products can be used on the neck and décolletage and the company says it is meant to tackle everything from crepey skin to sagging, as well as loss of firmness. It’s important to note that Cold Plasma Sub-D is separate product from the extensive Perricone MD line, and is sold by Guthy-Renker whose portfolio of brands also includes Meaningful Beauty, Crepe Erase and Sheer Cover Studio.
How Does Cold Plasma Sub-D Work?
There is very little information available on the Sub-D website to explain exactly how cold plasma works in skincare (and Dr Perricone seems to be the only brand who embraces this technology). According to Perricone MD, the Cold Plasma Sub-D works by “plasma technology” which is “designed to optimize delivery of proprietary ingredients for maximum results.” The company states that the formula contains “powerful ingredients suspended in a revolutionary delivery system and proprietary technology, including DMAE, to create a total neck rejuvenation treatment for the appearance of increased firmness to the jawline, chin and neck.”
How Should Cold Plasma Sub-D Be Used?
The cream is designed to be used twice a day, and can be applied on the chin, jawline, neck and décolletage. The company suggests massaging the product into the skin with a circular motion and it can also be used on the back of the neck.
What Ingredients Are in Cold Plasma Sub-D Products?
One of the key ingredients is DMAE, which Perricone says can make skin look firmer and more toned, and is thought to be anti-inflammatory . Perricone calls DMAE “the ultimate skin-firming ingredient and a serious multitasker.” DMAE is also known as dimethyl MEA, and is derived from fish such as sardines and anchovies. It was been used as a supplement for a long time, and is often marketed as a product to help boost mental clarity.
Acyl-Glutathione is another key ingredient, which the company says is formulated to minimize the appearance of lines and creases while improving skin vitality. Perricone MD has an entire collection based around Acyl-Glutathione, and is thought to work by boosting the body’s level of glutathione levels, an antioxidant that helps protect and repair the skin.
Rounding out the ingredients list is the antioxidant alpha lipoic acid that is thought to help minimize the appearance of fine lines, reduce pores and refine skin texture. Other ingredients include caffeine, dimethicone, cranberry seed oil, glycolic acid and sodium hyaluronate, which is smaller than hyaluronic acid.
What Other Products Are in the Cold Plasma Sub-D Line?
Cold Plasma Sub-D is a stand-alone product, but Perricone MD also has a separate cold plasma face creams in its Cold Plasma Plus collection. Some of the products in that collection include:
Cold Plasma Plus Fragile Skin Therapy – Formulated with retinol, growth factor peptides and micro hyaluronic acid, this body cream is meant to tackle crepey, saggy skin.
Cold Plasma Plus Neck & Chest Broad Spectrum SPF 25 – This cream has a whipped texture and is meant to smooths, firm and improve the texture of skin on the neck and chest with vitamin C ester, alpha lipoic acid, peptides, and vitamin B 3.
Cold Plasma Plus Advanced Serum Concentrate – Packed with vitamin C Ester and omegas 3, 6 and 9, this serum is meant to work on skin texture, pores, discoloration and brightness.
Cold Plasma Plus Eye – Tap this cream onto the delicate eye area twice a day to help brighten dark circles and reduce puffiness.
Is Cold Plasma Sub-D Cruelty Free?
Perricone MD is cruelty-free and does not test on animals.
Where Can I Buy Cold Plasma Sub-D Products?
Cold Plasma Sub-D is available on the company website, and is sold as part of a skincare kit. One option is the Face & Neck Firming Duo, which contains Cold Plasma Sub-D as well as High Potency Amine Face Lift, a serum. The more comprehensive kit contains the same two products along with three additional ones- Face Finishing Moisturizer, High Potency Eye Lift and High Potency Evening Repair for $79.95. As with all Guthy-Renker products, once a product is purchased, a buyer is also signing up to receive the product on auto delivery every three months. The company says on its website that all products come with a 60 day money back guarantee.
Jars of Cold Plasma Sub-D can also be found on Amazon from various third party retailers.
How Much Do Cold Plasma Sub-D Products Cost?
The Cold Plasma Sub-D cream from Guthy-Renker is only sold as part of a kit. The Face & Neck Firming Duo, which contains Cold Plasma Dub-D as well as High Potency Amine Face Lift serum, sells for $49.95. The larger kit is $79.95. It is important to note that Perricone MD’s Cold Plasma collection, which is available at Sephora, Ulta and department stores such as Nordstrom, is priced significantly higher, at $135 a jar.
Jars of Cold Plasma Sub-D on Amazon sell for anywhere between $59.99 and $109.99.
Do Cold Plasma Sub-D Products Work?
When deciding if a product works, it’s important to keep in mind that the same product can produce different results in people. One person’s miracle cream could do absolutely nothing for someone else- or cause irritation.
According to the company, 82% of users “felt the appearance of their chin / jawline was more toned, tight and firm.” A further 82% saw a decrease in the appearance of a double chin or sagging under the chin / jawline. 87% reported an improvement in the appearance of firmness of the neck area. New Beauty magazine named the product “the best neck firming cream” of 2014.
The vast majority of reviews for Cold Plasma Sub-D are found on the product’s website. The product garnered 4.2 stars from over 900 reviewers. Feedback ranges from “I’m on my 3rd jar and unfortunately I see no difference. I was pretty excited to try this and it feels good on my skin, but it just hasn’t worked for me” to fans who wrote, “Sub D really works on smoothing my neck and decolletage area of fine lines and creases, and gives a youthful glow. I know this works, as I went out of town for 2 weeks and left my Sub D behind. I began to notice the difference and couldn’t wait to get home.”
Only a handful of reviews are available on Amazon, where the product gets 4.3 stars from eight reviews. Seventy five percent of reviewers gave it five stars, and feedback included “This is great for your aging skin! I’ve tried many products but this is fantastic. People have commented to the change” and “Cold Plasma Sub D really makes a difference in the appearance of your neck. Smooths away most lines and tightens everything up. Just great stuff!”
Those who were not fans thought it didn’t do anything for them: “I have been using this product for about six weeks twice a day. I have seen no improvement in the sagging what so ever. I am very disappointed and now I’m stuck with this big jar of smelly stuff that doesn’t do anything except make my skin sticky and it stinks. I will not repurchase for sure.”
What Are Some Alternatives to Cold Plasma D?
Cold Plasma Sub-D may not be the right choice for everyone, because it may not react well with your skin or the price tag isn’t right. There is also very little information available online detailing how the product works.
Formulyst’s philosophy is long-term and effective skincare. The brand wants to help its customers achieve their best looking skin, rather than covering it up with makeup. The comprehensive line of products help target everything from wrinkles to dark spots and dry skin.
For smoother looking skin, skip the harsh exfoliants which can do more harm than good. Formulyst Retexturing and Perfecting Serum is powered by gentle but effective alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) which works to dissolve dead skin cells. Packed with plant based acids, apply this serum to the face and neck to whisk away old skin cells, leaving behind fresher, smoother looking skin. The serum also works to tackle unevenness and blotchiness.
If you’re looking for a moisturizer that is deeply hydrating but has a lightweight texture, try Formulyst Super Hyaluronic Water Moisturizer. Hyaluronic acid helps keep skin plumped, hydrated and dewy looking. This oil free formula is packed with multiple types of hyaluronic acid and it works as a moisture magnet by drawing water to the skin.
If you prefer the simplicity of a skincare kit, consider Advanced Dermatology. This no nonsense brand offers a pared down approach to skincare. The packaging is simple and streamlined, and the products bring skincare back to the basics. The kit contains just six essential items including a daily cleanser; serum; anti-wrinkle firming treatment; night cream; day cream and an eye cream. In other words, everything you need to achieve your best possible looking skin.
