Burt’s Bees is a natural beauty brand that offers a wide variety of personal care products, including skin care, hair care, cosmetics, oral care, and more. Burt’s Bees originated in Maine, in 1984, when artist Roxanne Quimby started making candles out of unused wax from Burt Shavitz’s beehives. After Quimby read one of Shavitz’s 19th-century books about beekeeping, which included homemade personal care recipes, Burt’s Bees entered into the personal care products industry.

Burt’s Bees manufactures products with mostly natural ingredients. Of course, one of their main ingredients is beeswax, which can be found in many of their creams, lotions, and lip balms. Burt’s Bees uses minimal processing, such as distillation/condensation, extraction/steamed distillation/pressure cooking, and hydrolysis, to maintain the purity of ingredients. The brand believes that what you put on your body should be made from the best nature has to offer.

Thus, by inhibiting elastin breakdown, Hibiscus extract actively combats the aging process by firming and lifting your skin. Other beneficial ingredients in the Burt’s Bees Renewal Intensive Firming Serum include apple fruit extract, raspberry seed oil, watermelon fruit extract, lentil fruit extract, and more. These ingredients help to nourish and hydrate the skin.

One of the key ingredients in this eye treatment is Bellis perennis (daisy) flower extract, which contains a compound called arbutin. Arbutin is a glycosylated hydroquinone that has the ability to inactivate tyrosinase. Tyrosinase is a key enzyme involved in the synthesis of melanin, the pigment that gives skin color. Therefore, by inhibiting tyrosinase, daisy extract may be able to reduce abnormal pigmentation associated with aging and exposure to UV light. In addition to daisy extract, Burt’s Bees Brightening Eye Treatment contains several botanical oils and butters, such as sunflower seed oil, apricot kernel oil, shea butter, olive fruit oil, and more. These ingredients function as emollients, softening the skin and locking in moisture.

Key formulation

Of course, the key ingredient in many of Burt’s Bees skin care products is beeswax. Beeswax, also known as cera alba, is a natural wax produced by honeybees in the cell walls of honeycombs. The honeycomb is collected and melted after the honey is removed, and what’s left is beeswax that’s ready for industry uses. It can take as much as 10 pounds of honey to produce one pound of beeswax.

There are about 300 compounds found in beeswax, including alkanes, acids, esters, polyesters, and hydroxy esters. Beeswax is a natural thickener and emulsifier that helps cosmetics, lotions, and balms to bind. Beeswax is also a humectant moisturizer. Humectants have a molecular structure with several hydrophilic (water loving) groups, which allows them to attract and retain the moisture in the air nearby via absorption. Humectants improve moisture retention and may also help other topical skin care ingredients to perform better. Lastly, beeswax acts as an emollient and occlusive agent. It forms a soft, protective barrier on the surface of skin, which helps to prevent evaporation of the skin’s natural moisture. Over time, this increases skin hydration by causing buildup of water in the stratum corneum (the uppermost layer of skin). The barrier also protects the skin from environmental factors that may irritate the skin.
