Olay started with just one product, a pink “beauty fluid” sold in 1952 and is now a global brand with multiple collections, including ProX, Total Effects and Regenerist. The newest Olay line is the anti-aging focused Olay Regenerist Retinol 24, which launched in late 2019. Here’s a closer look at the collection, what retinol does for skin and is it worth a try?
What Is Olay Regenerist?
Regenerist is Olay’s anti-aging line which debuted in 2003. Regenerist is formulated to help soften the look of wrinkles and plump up the look of the skin through hydration, and also works to improve skin elasticity, according to the company. The line includes Olay Regenerist Whip; Olay Regenerist Micro Sculpting Cream; Olay Regenerist Night Recovery Cream, Olay Regenerist Micro-Sculpting Eye Swirl, and Olay Regenerist Regenerating Serum.
The Regenerist line was reformulated in 2013, when the silicone base was swapped for water. The formula was also tweaked to address damage from UV rays, smoke and pollution, and two new ingredients were added, lys-lastine and olivem. Lys-Lastine is derived from dill extract and works to improve skin cell elasticity, while olivem comes from olive oil and protects skin cells by boosting antioxidants. What is Olay Regenerist Retinol 24?
The Olay Regenerist Retinol 24 collection launched in September 2019 with just three fragrance free products- Regenerist Retinol 24 Night Serum, Regenerist Retinol 24 Night Face Moisturizer and Regenerist Retinol 24 Night Eye Cream.
The collection is designed to deliver the benefits of retinol while also hydrating the skin. The products should be applied at night, and are packaged in a vibrant purple hue.
The key ingredient is retinol, a vitamin A derivative that is considered the gold-standard ingredient for anti-aging. According to the Mayo Clinic, topical retinoids “may reduce fine wrinkles, splotches and roughness when applied to the skin.” As Healthline puts it, “Dermatologists consider retinol the holy grail of noninvasive wrinkle-prevention. When applied topically, this vitamin A derivative stimulates collagen production and cell turnover, which reduces the appearance of fine lines, evens out complexion, and unclogs pores.”
What makes Regenerist Retinol 24 different is that it contains retinol along with the less irritating retinyl propionate. The “24” indicates that the product is meant to hydrate and deliver retinol slowly throughout the night.
What Products Are In The Olay Regenerist Retinol 24 Products?
The Olay Regenerist Retinol 24 collection consists of a night cream, serum and an eye cream. The Regenerist Retinol 24 Night Serum has two main functions. It hydrates the skin while also delivering a dose of retinol. The formula is fragrance and dye free and is designed to help improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, as well as dark spots and pores. The serum should be layered under a moisturizer.
Regenerist Retinol 24 Night Face Moisturizer contains Olay’s proprietary retinoid complex to help the skin look brighter and smoother, along with helping to minimize the look of wrinkles and dark spots. The cream also gives the skin an exfoliation, thanks to the retinol. The cream hydrates the skin with ingredients such as glycerin.
Olay Regenerist Retinol 24 Night Eye Cream is formulated for the delicate skin of the eye area, and is designed to moisturize as well as help tackle the signs of anti-aging, including dark spots, wrinkles and fine lines.
How Much Do Olay Regenerist Retinol 24 Products Cost?
Olay Regenerist Retinol 24 products are priced in line with drugstore items. All three products- Olay Regenerist Retinol 24 Night Eye Cream, moisturizer and serum retail for $28.99 each.
Is Olay Regenerist Retinol 24 Cruelty Free?
No. Although Olay states that is calling for an end to animal testing in skin care and the beauty industry and does not test its products on animals, Olay products are sold in some countries that mandate animal testing.
What Ingredients Are in Olay Regenerist Retinol 24?
The hero ingredient in all of the Olay Regenerist Retinol 24 products is retinol. Retinol is a vitamin A derivative that has been used in skincare for decades. It is the key ingredient in the prescription acne medication Retin-A, patented by the dermatologist Dr. Albert M. Kligman. Although Retin-A was originally prescribed for acne, patients also reported that cream made their wrinkles less noticeable and dark spots were fading. Their feedback helped propel retinol to be used in anti-aging products, and today it is considered the top anti-aging skincare weapon.
Retinol works by accelerating skin cell turnover, which means that skin looks smoother, dark spots are lightened and fine lines are not as prominent. It also helps to decrease the look of pores. Although often hailed as a miracle worker, retinols can also cause skin to become dry, irritated and flaky and more prone to sunburns. The general rule of thumb is to start slowly with retinols, using a small amount a few days a week and building up usage over time.
Olay lists “retinoid complex” as its main ingredient, and “retinoid” is a broad term that includes both over the counter and prescription versions of vitamin A. Retinol, retinyl palmitate, retinyl acetate and retinyl linoleate are over the counter versions and are not as powerful as prescription strength retinoids. However, less powerful also means potentially less irritating. Olay’s includes retinol and retinyl propionate.
Other ingredients in the collection include vitamin B3 (or niacinamide), which helps to hydrate skin and also works on surface skin cell turnover to remove dull skin, so it also helps fade dark spots and discoloration. Dermnet NZ notes that niacinamide also has anti-inflammatory properties and may help to stave off water loss.
Another key ingredient is amino peptides, which Olay describes as “chains of amino acids and the building blocks of skin cells. These ‘boss babe’ molecules are known to help skin look smoother and firmer.” Another way to think about them is that amino acids are the building blocks of proteins such as collagen, elastin and keratin, which all give the skin firmness and structure.
Other ingredients in the night cream include dimethicone (a silicone); glycerin, a humectant which means it helps retain moisture; various stabilizers; caprylic triglyceride triglycerides which is usually made from combining coconut oil with glycerin; and titanium dioxide, a thickener that is also used as a mineral sunscreen. The formulas for the eye cream and serum are all similar to the night cream, but the eye cream has the addition of the antioxidant vitamin E.

Does Olay Regenerist Retinol 24 Work?
Perhaps you are already a loyal Olay customer, or you think that millions of people can’t be wrong about this drugstore staple. But beauty is never one size fits all, so figuring out what works for you takes time, and some trial and error.
Editorial reviews can be a good place to start. The Olay Regenerist Retinol 24 collection launched with a splash in late 2019, with editors praising its affordable price tag. The Olay Regenerist Retinol 24 Moisturizer won a Glamour Beauty Award in 2020. In Glamour’s review, the writer noted “Olay’s offering is one of the first drugstore versions I actually love. To put it in perspective, most of the products I’ve recommended in the past are triple the price point. That said, this formula is just as effective.” The writer felt “it’s already working plenty of magic on my face.” As Revelist commented, “…it’s not every day that such retinols come at such an affordable price and truly do it all.”
Well + Good said that the collection has “officially raised the bar on what we can expect from affordable, over-the-counter retinoids…Their textures are dreamy and soft, and all absorb nicely so that they get straight to work on giving you that radiance that you can expect from using retinoid skin care.”
The blog Katie’s Bliss reviewed the collection in late 2019, and said that “The eye cream in particular has become a staple in my nighttime routine” and she found it to be “rich and hydrating.” She summed it up this way; “If you’re new to retinol and looking to test the waters without spending a fortune, the Olay Retinol24 collection is a good place to start.”
Customers also praised its price tag while others found it to be too strong for their skin. On Influenster, more than 1900 reviewers gave the Regenerist Retinol 24 a 4.4 out of 5 star rating. Fans call it their “keeper” and “My skin feels much healthier and less wrinkled after a few weeks of using it.” One user wrote “It makes my face feel and look so smooth! I’m already seeing results, my acne/scars seem to be going away!” Some found it to be too much for their skin. As one user noted, “I found out the hard way with this product that retinol can burn your skin if you use too much too quickly, and if paired if paired with other products with similar ingredients.” Other were “underwhelmed” or found that it increased skin sensitivity.=
On Target.com, the Regenerist Retinol 24 serum has a 4.5 out of 5 star rating from about 1500 reviews. Those who loved it noted “love how my skin feels after using this product! It’s so light. This is my new favorite night time routine along with the eye cream” and “My skin looks 10 years younger! I just love it!” Customers who gave it a low rating didn’t like that it contained dimethicone or just didn’t like the texture. “This was a major flop for me. The product itself is a thin milky liquid that absorbs quickly but doesn’t give me any added moisture or helped with any problem skin areas.” Another customer noted “I didn’t find anything wrong with the product, but I just didn’t notice it doing much for my skin.”
What Are Some Alternatives to Olay Regenerist Retinol 24 ?
Although Olay Regenerist Retinol 24 has a loyal fan base, it may not work for everybody. There are a few other brands to consider.
Formulyst makes it easy to create your own skincare routine. Each skincare concern is assigned a number, and your personal combination will be just as unique as you (and your skin) are. All you have to do is find your formula, and follow the numbers.
Formulyst’s Anti-Aging Night Cream contains the all-star of any anti-aging regimen, retinol. It does a little bit of everything, from addressing fine lines, crow’s feet as well as dark spots. The night cream contains a high dose of retinol along with skin soothing safflower seed oil and jojoba.
Formulyst’s Active Serum is packed with good for you ingredients, such as nourishing vitamins B and E, and vitamin C, which helps skin look brighter. Rounding out the all-star list are ferulic acid and niacinamide which help stabilize the formula and boost the potency of vitamin C.
Arbutin is a common alternative to skin lightening hydroquinone, and is the star ingredient in Formulyst’s Luminous Skin Serum, which zeroes in on skin discoloration and hyperpigmentation. The serum is powered by Triple Brightening Technology, a powerful blend of naturally derived alpha arbutin, rumex extract (a plant that helps stop the production of melanin) and a biomimetic peptide.
