Kiehl’s has been a bestselling skincare brand for decades, and their legacy has lead to the development of some cult classic products. One of these fan favorites is their Ultra Facial Cleanser, which is a mild foaming cleanser that’s suitable for all skin types. But what about this cleanser makes it so popular among skincare junkies? Today, we’re looking into the formula behind this product to give you all the details. So without further adieu, let’s get started!

Who is the Ultra Facial Cleanser For?

The Ultra Facial Cleanser was designed to work with all skin types. This product cleanses thoroughly without stripping or over-drying, making it an excellent option for mature, dry and even sensitive skin types. The product has also been tested for its gentleness, so you won’t have to worry about any irritation following use.

Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cleanser

The Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cleanser was designed to have a little bit of everything, in order to suit every skin type. Properly cleansing your skin is one of the most important steps you can take towards improving the condition of your skin and preserving its appearance long term. But often times, we look at cleansing as less important that our treatments and active ingredients.

Cleansing your skin removes impurities, makeup, dirt, debri and oil that have accumulated throughout the day, and it’s important to remove these from the skin thoroughly. But doing so can be a bit of a double edged sword. While a purifying cleanser can get rid of all the things that aren’t doing our skin any favors, it can also strip away our natural oils that keep our skin balanced, healthy and calm. Finding the right cleanser is all about striking a balance between effectively removing impurities, while also maintaining the health and condition of our skin’s moisture barrier.

This is exactly where the Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cleanser comes in. This mildly foaming cleanser helps to dissolve oil and dirt from within your pores, while also moisturizing your skin with plant oils like squalane, apricot kernel oil and avocado oil. The Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cleanser is also pH-balanced, so it won’t interfere with your skin’s ability to regulate and heal itself.

Formula Focus

When it comes to the formula behind this product, there are a number of factors to consider. Starting off with the base of this formula, the first five ingredients include water, sodium laureth sulfate, decyl glucoside, glycerin and cocamidopropyl betaine. It’s important to note that this product does contain sodium laureth sulfate. While this is a gentler alternative to sodium lauryl sulfate, or SLS, its still much more aggressive than some of the milder sulfates that are becoming more and more popular in skincare. These harsher sulfates can occasionally cause sensitivity and can be overly drying for those with dry, sensitive or mature skin types. Decyl glucoside and cocamidopropyl betaine are both more gentle surfactants. All together, this creates a very sulfate heavy formula, which can be beneficial for those with oily skin, but can backfire on other skin types.

Moving on to the core of this formula, there are a number of other ingredients worth taking into consideration. Towards the end of the ingredients list, we have a number of plant oils and moisturizers. This includes squalane, sweet almond oil, apricot kernel oil, vitamin E, and avocado oil. Squalane is a Kiehl’s signature ingredient, which is featured in several of their bestselling products. This oil is derived from olives and is intensely moisturizing while also absorbing quickly into the skin. Sweet almond and apricot kernel helps to condition the skin while also helping to balance the formula and keep it from drying out the skin. Together, all of these plant oils help to create a moisturizing cream that cleans without overstripping.

How To Use The Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cleanser

As with most face cleansers, the easiest way to use this facial is to pump a dime-sized amount of cleanser onto fingertips before massaging into the skin to create a lather. When you’ve completed cleansed your skin, simply rinse away the product and continue on to the next steps in your regular skincare routine.
