Jack Black Skincare is one of the tried and true men’s skincare brands. But what makes this brand such a favorite for skincare and shaving needs? Today, we’re looking into the formulas behind Jack Black Skincare to see just how effective this products are. So without further adieu, let’s get started!

Behind the Brand

Jack Black Skincare was created 19 years ago to address a niche that the founders felt, was not adequately filled prior. There is no shortage of luxurious, indulgent skincare for women with hundreds of brands offering different options. The founders of Jack Black Skincare wanted to create a brand that brought this same type of luxury to men’s skincare and shaving routines.

Today, Jack Black Skincare is the #1 best selling men’s skincare brand. The brand has chosen to adhere very closely to their original methods, and continue to listen closely to their customers to guide the production and creation of their products. The result are no-fuss products that work well, and work together to create a skincare and shaving ritual filled with simple pleasures.

The Skin Care Line

Jack Black Skincare is a brand that specializes skincare and shaving that combines the best of luxury skincare with a no-nonsense approach to formulation and design.

Currently, Jack Black offers four different lines which include skincare, shaving, hair care and bodycare. The four lines include: Performance Remedy, PureScience, ProSeries Age Control, and Epic Moisture.

Each line offers something different, and has been designed to treat a wide range of concerns.

Starting off with the Performance Remedy collection, this range was designed to serve as a bodycare range for those who live an active lifestyle. This range includes their aluminium free deodorant, their Oil-Free Sun Guard SPF 45 Sunscreen as well as several body wash options.

The second range, PureScience, includes both skincare and haircare products to serve a variety of needs. All of the formulas within the PureScience range are free of synthetic fragrance, colorants and parabens. Most of the brand’s best selling skincare staples are based in this collection, which includes products like their Face Wash, Toner, Shampoo and Conditioner.

The third range, ProSeries Age Control takes the basic building blocks that are available in the PureScience skin care products, and adds to them to create a more targeted, potent routine. The ProSeries was designed to target mainly anti-aging concerns and uses ingredients like peptides, antioxidants and vitamins to deliver these results.

Finally, the Epic Moisture collection is their smallest collection, which is dedicated to mostly bodycare. It includes three body care products including a nourishing oil, a body wash and a hydrating lotion.

Formula Focus

Looking more closely at some of the specific formulas, Jack Black skincare utilizes a number of active, naturally-derived ingredients to give their products a number of benefits. Starting off with some of the core staples in their skincare routine, we have their Pure Clean Daily Facial Cleanser. This cleanser actually acts as a 2-in-1 product, which cleanses and tones the skin, preparing it for shaving or the rest of your skincare routine.

The base of this product contains a blend of water, sodium C14-16 olefin sulfonate, disodium cocoamphodiacetate, aloe leaf juice and cocamidopropyl betaine. Sodium C14-16 olefin sulfonate and disodium cocoamphodiacetate are both considered surfactants or foaming agents, that act as a gentler alternatives to harsh sulfates like sodium lauryl sulfate.

Aloe leaf juice acts a multi-functional ingredient in this formula, as it can hydrate as well as soothe irritated skin. Finally, cocamidopropyl betaine is derived from coconut oil and can be used as both a thickening agent as well as a gentler surfactant.

Getting into the core of this formula however, we start to see more specialized and targeted ingredients. This formula features a number of botanical extracts including lavender, clary sage, chamomile and rosemary extracts, each of which offer a number of benefits.

Lavender is known for its healing properties, but it can also be an excellent ingredient to use in the treatment of acne. Clary sage offers both anti-inflammatory as well as anti-bacterial properties, which can be beneficial when dealing with the after effects of acne such as redness, inflammation and scarring.

Chamomile, like lavender, is known mostly for its calming properties, but this ingredient can also help with reducing redness and possesses antiseptic properties as well. Finally, rosemary extract can help particularly with excess oily, making it an excellent ingredient for those with oily or acne-prone skin types.

Moving onto their some of their shaving products, their MP 10 Nourishing Oil from the Epic Moisture range offers a versatile oil that can be used from head to toe as a anti-aging facial oil, hair oil, body moisturizer or as a preparation step before shaving to reduce irritation. As the name would suggest, this product has 10 nourishing oils. These include argan oil, marula oil, moringa oil, watermelon seed oil, baobab oil, plum seed oil, olive oil, grapeseed oil, jojoba oil and rice bran oil.

All of these oils offer an excellent array of skincare benefits and are all incredibly rich sources of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. The one down side of this product though is that the first ingredient isn’t actually any of these oils, but cyclopentasiloxane.

Cyclopentasiloxane is a silicon-based compound that acts as an emollient. While it is considered to be a safe synthetic, silicones as a whole can be problematic ingredients for those with sensitive skin, so we recommend doing a patch test before incorporating this product into your daily routine.

Additionally, many of these oils have different comedogenic ratings, so those with a history of clogged pores should air on the side of caution when first incorporating this product into their routine.

Jack Black Protein Booster Skin Serum Review

When it comes to men’s skincare, there are few brands with more respect than Jack Black. Products like the Jack Black Protein Booster Skin Serum are a great example of this brand expanding what we traditionally think of when it comes to men’s skincare. Often time, men’s skincare products are typically designed for oily skin types, and can be focused on exfoliation and acne prevention. But skincare isn’t one size fits all, which is why Jack Black has continued to expand its skincare line to include more and more complex products for different skin concerns. The Protein Booster Skin Serum is a peptide-rich, anti-aging focus that was designed to help those with more mature or dry skin types to achieve smoother, more youthful, and healthier looking skin overall. Peptides are an excellent option for those of you who are looking to start incorporating anti-aging ingredients into your routine, but would like to avoid any potentially sensitizing ingredients like retinol or vitamin C. In addition to this category of ingredients, the Protein Booster Skin Serum also contains organic green tea and essential fatty acids to help ensure that your skin is balanced and protected all day.

Jack Black Deep Dive Glycolic Facial Cleanser Review

Jack Black Deep Dive Glycolic Facial Cleanser is a clay-based cleanser that is said to wash away dead skin cells, pore-clogging oil, and buildup, leaving skin fresher, smoother, firmer. This cleanser features kaolin, a type of natural clay, as a key ingredient. Kaolin has excellent absorption properties, which means it can absorb excess oil from the pores and help to reduce shine. Kaolin also functions as a gentle abrasive that can exfoliate the top layers of skin, removing any accumulated dead skin cells to reveal a brighter, smoother complexion. Another key ingredient in this cleanser is volcanic ash. Volcanic ash contains natural particles that work as a gentle physical exfoliant to help smooth and resurface the skin.

Jack Black Deep Dive Glycolic Facial Cleanser also includes glycolic acid, a type of alpha hydroxy acid (AHA). AHAs exfoliate the skin by targeting corneocytes (dead skin cells that make up the stratum corneum) in a process called corneocyte desquamation. By enhancing their breakdown and increasing the separation of skin cells, the rate of cell turnover is increased, leading to smoother, more radiant skin. Allantoin is also included in this cleanser because it is a very gentle yet effective moisturizing ingredient. Additionally, allantoin is a keratolytic, which means it has the ability to smooth skin through exfoliation of the top layer of dead skin cells. Allantoin can help to increase skin smoothness, aid in wound healing, and promote cell proliferation and longevity. Lastly, the Jack Black Deep Dive Glycolic Facial Cleanser contains numerous skin-soothing ingredients, such as arnica montana flower extract, green tea leaf extract, olive leaf extract, aloe vera leaf juice, calendula flower extract, and more.

Jack Black Face Buff Energizing Scrub Review

Jack Black Face Buff Energizing Scrub is a pre-shave cleanser and facial scrub in one that is said to gently exfoliate for an easier, closer shave. One of the key ingredients in this scrub is bamboo powder, which is derived from solidified silica-containing material from bamboo stems. These mineral rich, eco-friendly granules provide gentle exfoliation and help to remove impurities. Another key ingredient in the Jack Black Face Buff Energizing Scrub is allantoin, a very gentle yet effective moisturizing ingredient. Additionally, allantoin is a keratolytic, which means it has the ability to smooth skin through exfoliation of the top layer of dead skin cells. Allantoin can help to increase skin smoothness, aid in wound healing, and promote cell proliferation and longevity.

Jack Black Face Buff Energizing Scrub features Glycyrrhiza glabra (licorice) root extract, which is known to be a skin-conditioning agent that has the ability to improve the appearance of dry or damaged skin by reducing flaking and restoring suppleness. Additional soothing ingredients in this scrub include aloe vera leaf juice, cucumber fruit extract, and calendula flower extract. The cooling effect provided by this scrub is due to peppermint oil. While the cooling effect may be pleasant for some, peppermint oil is well known to cause sensitization reactions because it contains at least 44% menthol. Furthermore, Jack Black Face Buff Energizing Scrub contains many more ingredients that have the potential to aggravate the skin, including fragrance, butylphenyl methylpropional, benzyl salicylate, citronellol, limonene, geraniol, hydroxycitronellal, linalool, and more. These fragrance ingredients give the product a pleasant scent, however, they pose the risk of causing sensitization and irritation.

Jack Black Pure Clean Daily Facial Cleanser Review

Jack Black Pure Clean Daily Facial Cleanser is a 2-in-1 liquid cleanser and toner that is said to gently remove deep-down dirt and oil for clear, smooth, shave-ready skin. There are several coconut-derived surfactants in this cleanser, including sodium C14-16 olefin sulfonate, disodium cocoamphodiacetate, and cocamidopropyl betaine. A surfactant molecule contains one end that is hydrophilic (attracted to water) and one end that is lipophilic (attracted to oil). This allows surfactants to attract and suspends oils, dirt, and other impurities that have accumulated on the skin and wash them away. Even though cocamidopropyl betaine is derived from a natural source, this ingredient has been associated with irritation and allergic contact dermatitis. These reactions could be due to the ingredient itself or to impurities present in it.

Another cleansing agent in the Jack Black Pure Clean Daily Facial Cleanser is sodium lauroyl oat amino acids, which is a salt created by condensing the chloride form of lauric acid (a fatty acid) with amino acids derived from oat protein. It is considered to be very gentle and is not associated with causing skin dryness or irritation. Jack Black Pure Clean Daily Facial Cleanser also contains several soothing and anti-inflammatory ingredients, such as sage leaf extract, chamomile extract, and Aloe leaf extract. A final key ingredient in the Jack Black Pure Clean Daily Facial Cleanser is witch hazel leaf extract, which is a source of several types of antioxidants, including tannins. Tannins are phenolic compounds rich in hydroxy residues that impart astringent properties, resulting in a constricting and drying effect when applied to the skin. They work by cross-linking with proteins in skin known as keratins, creating an invisible film that can temporarily degrease skin, tighten and tone the skin, and minimize the appearance of enlarged pores. However, tannins can cause sensitization reactions with some people.
