Behind the Brand
Jack Black Skincare was created 19 years ago to address a niche that the founders felt, was not adequately filled prior. There is no shortage of luxurious, indulgent skincare for women with hundreds of brands offering different options. The founders of Jack Black Skincare wanted to create a brand that brought this same type of luxury to men’s skincare and shaving routines.
Today, Jack Black Skincare is the #1 best selling men’s skincare brand. The brand has chosen to adhere very closely to their original methods, and continue to listen closely to their customers to guide the production and creation of their products. The result are no-fuss products that work well, and work together to create a skincare and shaving ritual filled with simple pleasures.
The Skin Care Line
Jack Black Skincare is a brand that specializes skincare and shaving that combines the best of luxury skincare with a no-nonsense approach to formulation and design.
Currently, Jack Black offers four different lines which include skincare, shaving, hair care and bodycare. The four lines include: Performance Remedy, PureScience, ProSeries Age Control, and Epic Moisture.
Each line offers something different, and has been designed to treat a wide range of concerns.
Starting off with the Performance Remedy collection, this range was designed to serve as a bodycare range for those who live an active lifestyle. This range includes their aluminium free deodorant, their Oil-Free Sun Guard SPF 45 Sunscreen as well as several body wash options.
The second range, PureScience, includes both skincare and haircare products to serve a variety of needs. All of the formulas within the PureScience range are free of synthetic fragrance, colorants and parabens. Most of the brand’s best selling skincare staples are based in this collection, which includes products like their Face Wash, Toner, Shampoo and Conditioner.
The third range, ProSeries Age Control takes the basic building blocks that are available in the PureScience skin care products, and adds to them to create a more targeted, potent routine. The ProSeries was designed to target mainly anti-aging concerns and uses ingredients like peptides, antioxidants and vitamins to deliver these results.
Finally, the Epic Moisture collection is their smallest collection, which is dedicated to mostly bodycare. It includes three body care products including a nourishing oil, a body wash and a hydrating lotion.
Formula Focus
Looking more closely at some of the specific formulas, Jack Black skincare utilizes a number of active, naturally-derived ingredients to give their products a number of benefits. Starting off with some of the core staples in their skincare routine, we have their Pure Clean Daily Facial Cleanser. This cleanser actually acts as a 2-in-1 product, which cleanses and tones the skin, preparing it for shaving or the rest of your skincare routine.
The base of this product contains a blend of water, sodium C14-16 olefin sulfonate, disodium cocoamphodiacetate, aloe leaf juice and cocamidopropyl betaine. Sodium C14-16 olefin sulfonate and disodium cocoamphodiacetate are both considered surfactants or foaming agents, that act as a gentler alternatives to harsh sulfates like sodium lauryl sulfate.
Aloe leaf juice acts a multi-functional ingredient in this formula, as it can hydrate as well as soothe irritated skin. Finally, cocamidopropyl betaine is derived from coconut oil and can be used as both a thickening agent as well as a gentler surfactant.
Getting into the core of this formula however, we start to see more specialized and targeted ingredients. This formula features a number of botanical extracts including lavender, clary sage, chamomile and rosemary extracts, each of which offer a number of benefits.
Lavender is known for its healing properties, but it can also be an excellent ingredient to use in the treatment of acne. Clary sage offers both anti-inflammatory as well as anti-bacterial properties, which can be beneficial when dealing with the after effects of acne such as redness, inflammation and scarring.
Chamomile, like lavender, is known mostly for its calming properties, but this ingredient can also help with reducing redness and possesses antiseptic properties as well. Finally, rosemary extract can help particularly with excess oily, making it an excellent ingredient for those with oily or acne-prone skin types.
Moving onto their some of their shaving products, their MP 10 Nourishing Oil from the Epic Moisture range offers a versatile oil that can be used from head to toe as a anti-aging facial oil, hair oil, body moisturizer or as a preparation step before shaving to reduce irritation. As the name would suggest, this product has 10 nourishing oils. These include argan oil, marula oil, moringa oil, watermelon seed oil, baobab oil, plum seed oil, olive oil, grapeseed oil, jojoba oil and rice bran oil.
All of these oils offer an excellent array of skincare benefits and are all incredibly rich sources of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. The one down side of this product though is that the first ingredient isn’t actually any of these oils, but cyclopentasiloxane.
Cyclopentasiloxane is a silicon-based compound that acts as an emollient. While it is considered to be a safe synthetic, silicones as a whole can be problematic ingredients for those with sensitive skin, so we recommend doing a patch test before incorporating this product into your daily routine.
Additionally, many of these oils have different comedogenic ratings, so those with a history of clogged pores should air on the side of caution when first incorporating this product into their routine.
