SKIN CARE REVIEWS

02.15.21DISCLAIMER

Peptides are one of the most well-used and well-loved ingredients in anti-aging skincare. But what exactly do these ingredients do, and how can you incorporate them into your skincare routine? Today, we’re looking into the science behind peptides, and how brands like Hydropeptide are utilizing them in their formulations. So without further adieu, let’s get started!

What’s Inside The Ordinary Buffet?

The key ingredients — or “technologies” as the brand calls them — in The Ordinary Buffet include several innovative peptide complex and a probiotic complex. All of these technologies are formulated in a base of 11 skin-friendly amino acids and multiple hyaluronic acid complexes. The total concentration of these technologies in the formula by weight is 25.1%. Let’s discuss each of these key ingredients so that you’ll know exactly what they can do for your skin.

Matrixyl 3000 (Peptide Complex)
As you age, your body’s production of collagen and elastin slows down. These two proteins are responsible for your skin’s structural support. As a result, the skin loses its natural plumpness and smoothness.

While collagen is necessary for maintaining youthful-looking skin, the collagen protein is too large to absorb into the skin topically. That’s why applying skin care products that contain collagen won’t provide the anti-aging benefits you’re looking for.

This is where peptides come into action. Peptides are the building blocks of protein, and they are easily absorbed into the deeper layers of skin due to their smaller size.

One peptide technology inside The Ordinary Buffet is Matrixyl 3000. In case you aren’t familiar with this ingredient, it’s the trademarked peptide that’s made up of two matrikines (palmitoyl tripeptide-1 and palmitoyl tetrapeptide-7).

Matrikines are peptides that regulate cell activities through cell signaling. The two matrikines in Matrixyl 3000 work synergistically to restore and maintain the skin’s youthful appearance by signaling to cells to produce more collagen.

Matrixyl synthe’6 (Peptide Complex)
A similar technology is the Matrixyl synthe’6 peptide complex with palmitoyl tripeptide-38, a peptide derived from the tripeptide KMK naturally found in collagen VI and laminin. In-vitro studies have found palmitoyl tripeptide-38 to have a matrikine-like effect that stimulates the synthesis of collagen I, II, IV, fibronectin, hyaluronic acid, and laminin 5.

SYN-AKE (Peptide Complex)
Another peptide complex in The Ordinary Buffet is SYN-AKE, a synthetic peptide that mimics the effects of the peptide Waglerin 1. Waglerin 1 is a component of the venom found in the Temple Viper, a poisonous snake native to southeast Asia. SYN-AKE peptide complex works by reducing muscular contractions in the face and reduces cell movement; thereby keeping the skin smooth.

Argirelox (Peptide Complex)
The final peptide complex in The Ordinary Buffet is Argirelox peptide complex (with acetyl hexapeptide-8, pentapeptide-18). Similar to the SYN-AKE peptide complex, Argirelox helps to prevent the formation of expression wrinkles by modulating the release of neurotransmitters that induce muscle contraction.

Probiotic Complex
The probiotic complex in The Ordinary Buffet is lactococcus ferment lysate, which is obtained from the gram-positive bacteria, Lactococcus lactis.

Probiotics include various strains of helpful bacteria that collaborate with your skin to restore the skin’s microbiome. The microbiome is a population of many types of bacteria (over 10,000 different species) that are both good and bad.

When there’s more bad bacteria than good, skin conditions like acne, sensitive skin, and bumpy, uneven skin texture can develop.

Thus, the probiotic complex in The Ordinary Buffet can help to keep the microbiome balanced and maintain healthy skin.

Amino Acids
These key ingredients are in a base of 11 amino acids and multiple hyaluronic acid complexes. Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins in the body.

For example, amino acids make up the collagen in your skin, and they are also found in the skin’s natural moisturizing factor (NMF).

According to an article by Practical Dermatology, The NMF is composed principally of free amino acids, and various derivatives of these amino acids such as PCA, urocanic acid, and inorganic salts, sugars, as well as lactic acid and urea. All of these substances work together to keep the skin’s surface intact, supple, and hydrated.

The NMF can become depleted as we age, and also from routine exposure to sensitizing ingredients like drying cleansing agents and denatured alcohol. The result is visibly dry, tight-feeling, flaky skin.

Therefore, using skin care products that replenish the components of the NMF — such as the amino acids in The Ordinary Buffet — can help to maintain skin hydration.

Hyaluronic Acid Complexes
There are two hyaluronic acid complexes in The Ordinary Buffet: sodium hyaluronate crosspolymer and sodium hyaluronate. Sodium hyaluronate is the salt form of hyaluronic acid, a type of glycosaminoglycan (sugar molecule) that attracts moisture from the environment and draws that moisture into the skin’s upper layers.

In fact, hyaluronic acid has the ability to attract and hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water. Therefore, this ingredient can help to improve skin hydration while also giving the skin a plump, youthful look.

Behind the Brand

Hydropeptide is a cosmeceutical brand that focuses specifically on using peptides, epigenetic principles and sensory experience to guide their cosmetic formulations. But what are epigenetics? According to the Brand, the entire range of Hydropeptide products has been formulated, thanks to their team of geneticists, to work with your unique genes and the science of epigenetics to improve skin at a cellular level. The brand offers a full range of skincare, facial treatments and body care products. All of these products are designed to leave the skin feeling plump, smooth and radiant both after the first use as well as with continued application. Hydropeptide is also very passionate about the role of an esthetician in creating the perfect skincare routine to suit your needs, so they’ve decided their product range to be used in conjunction with regular visits to an esthetician or dermatologist.

Peptide Power

Hydropeptide specializes in clinically-testing skincare products that focus mostly on treating specific anti-aging skin concerns. Looking at some of their newest releases, we can see how they have designed their products around this concept.

For example, their newest addition, the Firm-A-Fix Nectar, is a lifting neck and decollete serum. This serum was designed to tighten and firm the skin with collagen boosting ingredients, reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, increase plumpness and fade sun damage and hyperpigmentation.

Another one of the newer releases from Hydropeptide is their Glow Team Hydrogel Mask Set. This product features 4 of Hydropeptides different masks. Each mask targets a different areas, whether you’re looking to treat the under eye area, These hydrogels perform similarly to sheet masks, but can actually deliver more of the nutrients within the sheet than a typical paper mask would.

Finally, some of their bestsellers include moisturizers like the Ninmi Face Cream. This moisturizer features some of the hallmark ingredients of this brand and is named after Dr. Marcel Nimni who researched and discovered the patented collagen boosting technology that is featured in this product, Additionally, like all of the other products in the Hydropeptide

I too have had a bad reaction to this product. This has burned my face and neck. I thought it was an allergic reaction but skin is now looking like a chemical peel burn. Will not use again. Please be careful when using this product.

I recently had a hydropeptide facial and it was amazing! My skin was glowing, and plump! I have super oily skin and the whole day I just looked radiant but not one bit oily. My skin felt hydrated. It was lovely. I bought the aquaboost moisturizer as I’m starting to get hormonal acne (or mask-acne) and I must say it controls the oil quite well. Very pleased. My skin feels soft, hydrated but not oily. It wears well under makeup. 10/10! Would totally recommend. Also, the blueberry mask is AMAZING!!! <3

Hydropeptide has changed my skin. My aesthetician told me not to mix and other lines with Hydro a Peptide and I followed her advice and have seen amazing results.

Broke out into a severe rash from these products. If I could upload the pictures I would! They did not work on my skin for one reason or another. My DR had to give me a steroid shot bc my eyes swelled shut and my face was in blisters. I had to literally sleep with ice packs on my face just so I wouldn’t scratch my ace off. It has been horrible. I won’t ever use these products again. I did speak to the CEO of their company to see if they had some form of sulfa in their products which they do in one according to her but I ended up hanging up on her because she was so rude and defensive. After dealing with my face being like this, the last thing I wanted to do was be on the phone with an arrogant CEO who was just out to cover herself. This was my experience and your may be different but I will never ever use this companys products again!!!!

Hydropeptide is a wonderful line if you are focused on anti-aging and acne control. Though there aren’t very many ranges in the line, each and every product is meant for all skin types. Many reactions with the products are caused by using other skin care products with Hydropeptide. It is HIGHLY recommended that if you start using Hydropeptide, use only that line. Its best not to mix it with other lines or there is a high probability that your skin will have a reaction. I work at a spa that sells this line and we use it in all of our facials. There are instant results in using this line. Some more drastic than others, but all in all a great skin care line if used properly. 🙂

I don’t know when you wrote the above article but HydroPeptide products can be purchased at Nordstrom, Skinstore; Lovelyskin and probably more. Does not have to be ordered on their website. I ordered 2 products from Nordstrom, i did notice that they didn’t have the entire line but did have the products I was looking for.

Jane – I recently had a hydropeptide facial. They didn’t give me recommendations. I am 45 & found many skin changes and this product is amazing. I bought lip plumper, eye & the mask. I would like to know what else to purchase in order that I may have an anti-aging complete protocol. Can you recommend?

I recently purchased the full range of Hydrapeptides and I absolutely love it!!
I am in my mid-40s, and have been using very good quality skincare since I was 16, but this is definitely the best!

I am 44 and I tried a few HydroPeptide products after reading about it in a magazine. The product I like the most is Power Lift Anti-Wrinkle Ultra Rich Concentrate. I got this moisturizer for winter because my face is extremely dry – so dry it even peels. It feels good and really moisturizes. IT is very rich compared to most moisturized and not recommended for oily skin.

    HydroPeptide Solar Defense Review

If you’re looking for an easy going, multi-purpose product that also offers benefit to the skin, you may want to check out a tinted SPF like the Hydropeptide Solar Defense. Tinted moisturizers with SPF offer the best of both worlds by providing a light wash of coverage to the skin, while also protecting the skin from damaging UV rays and photoaging. The Hydropeptide Solar Defense contains an SPF factor of 30, which makes this product ideal for everyday wear on its own or underneath foundation or concealer, depending on your makeup preferences. On its own, the light coverage offered by this product helps to counteract redness, even out skin tone and add a youthful luminosity to the skin. Additionally, this formula also contains skin loving ingredients like hyaluronic acid, calendula extract, cucumber extract and acai extract to boost the efficacy of the plentiful antioxidants within this formula.

    Hydropeptide Purifying Cleanser Review

If you’ve been on the hunt for a purifying cleanser that doesn’t dry out the skin, then chances are you’ve heard of the Hydropeptide Purifying Cleanser. Unfortunately though, this product has been discontinued, and is no longer available on either the brand’s website or from other retailers. With that said however, that doesn’t mean that you can’t experience the benefits of Hydropeptide cleansing formulas. This range actually contains 4-5 different cleansers including their Cleansing Gel Face Wash. Described as a one-and-done speed cleanser, this facial wash goes to work quickly to remove makeup, dirt and excess oil, leaving you with a clean canvas, perfectly prepared for the rest of your skincare routine. Like many of the other products available through Hydropeptide, this product contains a blend of peptides, antioxidants and anti-irritants to help reinforce the skin and encourage essential skin processes.

    Hydropeptide Exfoliating Cleanser Review

Hydropeptide Exfoliating Face Cleanser is a gentle, skin-renewing face wash that is said to reduce the appearance of pesky fine lines and wrinkles while perfectly prepping skin for the next step in your routine. One of the key ingredients in this cleanser is jojoba beads, which gently exfoliate the skin. The chemical composition of jojoba mimics the natural sebum (oil) of human skin more closely than any other oil. Thus, jojoba is capable of unclogging pores by removing excess oils and dead skin cells, as well as imparting a healthy glow and smooth skin texture. Another exfoliating ingredient in the Hydropeptide Exfoliating Face Cleanser is glycolic acid, a type of alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) that exfoliates the skin by targeting corneocytes (dead skin cells that make up the stratum corneum) in a process called corneocyte desquamation. By enhancing their breakdown and increasing the separation of skin cells, the rate of cell turnover is increased, leading to smoother, more radiant skin.

There are also several surfactants in the Hydropeptide Exfoliating Face Cleanser, such as cocamidopropyl hydroxysultaine, sodium C14-16 olefin sulfonate, decyl glucoside, and coco glucoside. A surfactant molecule contains one end that is hydrophilic (attracted to water) and one end that is lipophilic (attracted to oil). This allows surfactants to attract and suspends oils, dirt, and other impurities that have accumulated on the skin and wash them away. There are several volatile fragrance ingredients in the Hydropeptide Exfoliating Face Cleanser, such as orange peel oil, lemon peel extract, orange peel extract, and limonene. These ingredients have the potential to cause sensitization and skin irritation.
