No matter how many products a beauty company may create, they may always be associated with one runaway hit. For Kate Somerville fans that might be Exfolikate while Maybelline may be best known for its pink tube of Great Lash mascara. Clinique will always have its fans of Chubby Sticks and Lancome’s Juicy Tubes remain firm customer favorites almost 20 years later.

For SkinCeuticals, their best-known product is the SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic serum. This pricey serum has plenty of devoted fans and has become a cult favorite product since it debuted in 2005. Here’s a closer look at SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic serum, how it works and is it right for you?

What is SkinCeuticals?

SkinCeuticals is one of the pioneers of “cosmeceuticals,” which are cosmetic products that claim to have medical benefits (the name combines “cosmetics” with “pharmaceuticals”). The company debuted in 1997 and its skincare philosophy boils down to these three concepts: Prevention, Protection and Correction.

What Is SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic?

SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic is a patented, daily serum that launched in 2005 and is the result of decades of research conducted by SkinCeuticals founding scientist and former chief medical advisor, Dr. Sheldon Pinnell. Dr. Pinnell’s area of expertise include Vitamin C, skin cancer and skin aging. What made the product unique when it launched was the combination of the three key ingredients (vitamin C, ferulic acid and vitamin E). The combination of ingredients is meant to be more powerful than just vitamin C used on its own, and the formula has an optimal pH balance, according to the company.

SkinCeuticals C E ferulic serum does multiple things for skin. It helps protect it from environmental and sun damage, and also works to brighten and tone the skin. It is also designed to help improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It is fragrance free and suitable for all skin types, according to SkinCeuticals.

What ingredients are in SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic?

SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic contains just 12 ingredients including: 15% pure vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid) which helps to brighten the skin, 1% vitamin E to help nourish and protect the skin and 0.5% ferulic acid, an antioxidant found in plants including bran and some fruit seeds. Ferulic acid is thought to increase the stability of vitamins C and E, while also protecting the skin from environmental damage. Other ingredients include water, the humectants glycerin and propylene glycol, and sodium hyaluronate, a form of hyaluronic acid which occurs naturally in the body and is known as a moisturizing all-star as it can hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water.

But our favorite Vitamin C serum is Carrot & Stick The Defence Serum. It contains 3 distinct types of Vitamin C that work together to help fight free radical damage. We recommend using it every morning.

How Does SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic Work?

According to SkinCeuticals, the serum provides environmental protection by neutralizing the damage caused by free radicals. While it protects the skin, the serum also helps to brighten the complexion and soften the look of wrinkles and fine lines. It also helps to nourish and hydrate the skin.

How Should SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic Be Used?

The serum should be applied in the morning after cleansing. Only four to five drops are needed, and the serum should be applied underneath a moisturizer. Like most serums, it has a thin, watery consistency.

Is SkinCeuticals Cruelty Free?

SkinCeuticals is owned by L’Oréal, and according to the company, L’Oréal “does not test any of its products or any of its ingredients on animals and has been at the forefront of alternative methods for over 30 years.”

How Much Does SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic Serum Cost?

The C E Ferulic With L-Ascorbic Acid is $166 for a 30 ml (one ounce) bottle. You may wonder if it is worth the cost. We do not believe the product is worth $166. There are other products available with excellent formulation such as Carrot & Stick The Defence Serum.

Where Can I Buy SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic Products?

SkinCeuticals products are sold on the company’s website and through a network of authorized retailers that includes Blue Mercury and TheDermstore.com, as well as various medi-spas.

Does SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic Work?

When trying to decide if a product works, it’s important to keep in mind that everyone’s skin may react differently to the same product, so a little trial and error and some research into customer reviews is always helpful.

SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic has become a cult favorite beauty product among customers, magazine editors as well as dermatologists. The C E Ferulic serum has won over 35 awards, including Allure’s Best of Beauty three times, and Harper’s Bazaar named it one of the “11 Best Vitamin C Serums of All Time” in 2019. NewBeauty included it in a round up of “The Most Essential Beauty Items” in 2018.

Plenty of dermatologists have also gone on record in media interviews saying they are fans (but their company affiliations are not always known). In an interview with Refinery 29, dermatologist Laurel Naversen Geraghty, MD said she is a fan. “C E Ferulic is one of the very few over-the-counter products that is backed by research published in peer-reviewed medical journals,” she says. “I believe it has a positive effect for guarding against free radical damage that we naturally accumulate during the day (from sun, pollution, and our skin’s natural metabolism), which is why I don’t mind paying over $100 for this serum. It’s key that it comes with an opaque dropper bottle, since light and heat can easily break down vitamin C.”

On TheDermstore.com, nearly 1400 reviewers give it a five star rating. Fans say “This product really seems to help with my hyperpigmented acne scars. I put it on before I moisturize in the morning. Will continue to use in the future” and “I was recommended this product a few years ago after my first chemical peel. It helps balance my skin tone and makes my skin so supple without causing breakouts! It’s super expensive but I can’t live without it!” Those who gave it a low rating commented on its smell (some online reviews liken the smell to “hot dog water” or bacon) or said that it did nothing for them. “I’ve been using this product since September; about 5 months. There is no difference in my skin at all. My skin tone is still uneven with fine lines. My complexion is neither brighter nor glowing. No difference at all!”

What Are The Best Alternatives?

If you’re looking for skincare products to address the signs of aging, we recommend Carrot & Stick. Carrot & Stick maximizes the use of powerful ingredients and minimizes the use of superficial ones, resulting in advanced skincare solutions that help promote healthy, more youthful-looking skin. We recommend this serum.
