Urban Skin Rx is a line of clinical skin care products developed by Rachel Roff, a licensed medical aesthetician, certified laser technician, and founder/owner of Urban Skin Solutions Med Spa, Laser and Weight Loss Center in Charlotte, NC. She opened Urban Skin Solutions in 2006 at the age of 25 and launched her line of Urban Skin Rx clinical skin care products in 2010.

Urban Skin Rx products are said to stand apart from typical over-the-counter skin care products because they include higher concentrations of active ingredients. The products also include ingredients to correct and prevent uneven skin tone, the most common concern of women of color. In fact, the brand calls themselves the “Melanin Experts”. Melanin is a term that refers to a group of pigments produced by cells called melanocytes in the lower level of the epidermis that determine the color of our skin and hair. In addition, when skin is exposed to the sun’s UV rays for a prolonged period of time, specific triggers send signals to melanin sites which activate the enzyme tyrosinase. Then, tyrosinase stimulates skin cells called melanocytes to produce excess melanin creating dark pigment. The over production of melanin disperses upward in clumps that appear as dark spots and uneven skin tone. This process is also what causes the skin to visibly tan.

Key products

Urban Skin Rx offers a diverse selection of products for diverse skin tones, including products for acne, aging, dark spots/uneven tone, dryness/eczema, large pores, oily skin, under eye circles, ingrown hairs, sensitive skin, and even products that are safe to use during pregnancy. A few of the most popular Urban Skin Rx products include the Clear Skin Cleansing Bar, Super C Brightening Serum, and Even Tone Night Treatment.

Urban Skin Rx Clear Skin Cleansing Bar
Urban Skin Rx Clear Skin Cleansing Bar is best for those with oily skin because it contains ingredients like salicylic acid and sulfur, which are known to help clear excess oil from the pores. It is not recommended to use the cleansing bar if you have dry and/or sensitive skin. This unique cleansing system comes with a sponge and cleansing bar. After moistening the enclosed spone, you rub it across the cleansing bar to create a creamy lather. Then, you gently massage onto face using small circular motions, allowing the lather to remain on the face for one to two minutes before rinsing off.

Urban Skin Rx Super C Brightening Serum
The Super C Brightening Serum is a brightening and anti-aging serum that can be used by anyone who has concerns with dark marks, uneven skin tone, and blemishes. However, it is not suitable for women who are pregnant or nursing and those with sensitive skin. Brightening ingredients in this serum include 20% ascorbic acid (vitamin C), ferulic acid, and kojic acid, which work synergistically to improve the appearance of dark spots and sun damage. This serum also contains ingredients such as hyaluronic acid to improve skin hydration and peptides to reduce the appearance of fine lines while encouraging a fuller, brighter look.

Urban Skin Rx Even Tone Night Treatment
Even Tone Night Treatment is best for anyone suffering from uneven skin tone, dark marks, and/or hyperpigmentation, and aging concerns. It contains a synergistic blend of kojic acid, retinol, 2% hydroquinone, and other medical grade ingredients, which help to brighten skin, fade dark spots, clear clogged pores, and minimize the signs of aging. However, this treatment is not suitable for women who are pregnant or nursing, or anyone who does not have issues with dark marks, hyperpigmentation, and/or uneven skin tone.

Key formulation

There are several key ingredients that are used throughout the line of Urban Skin Rx skin care products, such as kojic acid, salicylic acid, and retinol.

Naturally produced by certain fungi, kojic acid helps improve skin brightness and reduce discoloration because of its effects on tyrosinase. Kojic acid works by preventing a specific function of tyrosinase called its catecholase function. The catecholase function is the most important step in the production of melanin. As mentioned above, melanin is what contributes to the tanning of skin as well as the formation of undesirable dark spots and discoloration. Therefore, by inhibiting the ability of tyrosinase to make melanin, kojic acid is able to prevent skin pigmentation. Kojic acid can be found in many Urban Skin Rx products, such as the Even Tone Cleansing Bar, Even Tone Night Treatment, and more.

Salicylic acid is a beta hydroxy acid (BHA) that is oil soluble, which means it can penetrate deep into the pores of the skin. After entering the pores, salicylic acid exfoliates the pore lining, which loosens clogged dirt and oil, and helps to wash these impurities away. It also has the ability to dissolve keratin, a protein that acts as a “glue” to keep dead skin cells together in the stratum corneum. This is effective because dead skin cells can build up on the surface of your skin, leaving it looking dull and also possibly clogging pores. You can find salicylic acid in the Urban Skin Rx Clear Skin Cleansing Bar, Clear & Even Tone Clarifying Glycolic Pads, and more.

Retinol is one of the many different types of retinoids (the umbrella term for all vitamin-A derivatives, including retinol) that can be found in skin care products. After retinol is absorbed into the skin, it is converted to retinoic acid (the active form). Retinoic acid interacts with receptors to increase the production of collagen and promote healthy cell turnover. Increasing cell turnover is important to prevent excess dead skin cells from accumulating on the surface, which can cause a dull complexion and clogged pores. Once these dead cells are removed, new healthy cells are revealed. In addition, retinol is a potent antioxidant that can protect the skin from free radical damage. Numerous studies have proven that retinol can minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, improve uneven skin tone, restore skin firmness, and shrink the appearance of enlarged pores. You’ll find retinol in the Urban Skin Rx Even Tone Night Treatment.

Urban Skin Rx has received several awards and has been featured in many popular magazines, such as Cosmopolitan, Shape, and The Oprah Magazine. The reviews on the brand’s website are very positive. The key products mentioned above have received an average of 4.6 out of 5 stars or higher. Overall, the majority of the reviews mention that the products are effective and help to keep skin clear and glowing.
