Brand background

SkinScript is a beauty brand that specializes in corrective skin care for all skin types and ethnicities, offering both retail and professional skin care products. The products were designed and developed under the direction of physicians and aestheticians to create a unique skin care line to treat their clients’ top concerns while improving their skin’s appearance and repairing damaged skin.

Is SkinScript cruelty free?

SkinScript products are cruelty free and are never tested on animals. While SkinScript does not harm animals in the making of their products, some do contain ingredients such as lactic acid or yogurt (derived from milk), or honey. However, SkinScript does offer some vegan skin care products.

Key products

SkinScript offers two different lines of skin care products, a professional line for aestheticians and a retail line. If you’re an aesthetician, SkinScript offers a wide variety of options for your clients, including varying strengths of chemical peels, fruit enzymes, and clay masks. In this section, we’ll discuss a few of the key skin care products in the SkinScript retail line. Keep in mind, however, that these retail products cannot be purchased online by consumers. Rather, consumers must contact their nearest retailer to purchase SkinScript products.

One popular SkinScript retail product is the Glycolic Cleanser, a foamy cleanser infused with a combination of alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs). It is said to renew the skin by removing the uppermost layer of dead skin cells to reveal a bright, smooth skin surface. However, there are a few potentially irritating ingredients in this cleanser’s formula, which we will discuss in the next section.

Another key skin care product by SkinScript is an anti-aging serum called Retinaldehyde Serum with IconicA. This serum is said to significantly improve skin radiance, brightness, smoothness, fine lines, photo damage, and overall skin tone.

SkinScript Hydrating Moisturizer is the final key skin care product we’ll discuss. The Hydrating Moisturizer is said to improve the appearance of wrinkles with intense hydration, as well as bind moisture in the skin, soothe, calm, and strengthen capillaries.

Key formulation

In this section, we’ll discuss the formulation details behind each of the key SkinScript products mentioned above.

SkinScript Glycolic Cleanser features several types of alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), including 17% glycolic acid, as well as malic and tartaric acid. AHAs exfoliate the skin by targeting corneocytes (dead skin cells that make up the top layers of skin) in a process called corneocyte desquamation. By enhancing their breakdown and increasing the separation of skin cells, the rate of cell turnover is increased. Ultimately, this helps to improve uneven skin texture, resulting in smoother, softer skin. AHAs are also known to stimulate collagen production. Unfortunately, SkinScript Glycolic Cleanser contains several ingredients that can potentially irritate and damage skin, including denatured alcohol, vanilla extract oil, and sandalwood oil.

Retinaldehyde Serum with IconicA features a vitamin A derivative called IconicA (Retinal), the first stable retinaldehyde in the industry. For any vitamin A derivative to be effective, it must first convert into retinoic acid. For example, you’re probably familiar with retinol, which must be converted to retinaldehyde and then to retinoic acid. IconicA offers more effectiveness than retinol because it is one step closer to retinoic acid. Retinoic acid is clinically proven to minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, improve uneven skin tone, restore skin firmness, and shrink the appearance of enlarged pores. Additional ingredients in this serum that offer benefit to the skin include niacinamide (a form of vitamin B3), L-carnitine, phenylethyl resorcinol, and bisabolol.

SkinScript Hydrating Moisturizer is formulated with many moisturizing ingredients, such as shea butter, squalane, rosehip oil, and aloe. Shea butter forms an occlusive barrier on the surface of skin to help lock in moisture. Squalane helps to replenish the skin’s lipid barrier. A strong, intact barrier is important to keep moisture in and keep things like allergens, bacteria, and irritants out. When the barrier is weakened, these intruders can pass through the top layer of skin, causing damage that ultimately leads to common skin conditions such as acne, rashes, sensitive skin, and even signs of aging. Squalane helps to prevent and address these problems. Rosehip oil contains beta carotene, which has the ability to increase cell turnover and promote regeneration in the outer layers of the skin. Rosehip oil also contains all-trans retinoic acid (a vitamin A acid) that stimulates cellular regeneration and collagen production within the skin. This improves skin texture and reduces the appearance of lines and wrinkles. Aloe helps to draw moisture into the skin, as well as soothe any irritation and calm inflammation.

What are some alternatives to SkinScript?

While SkinScript offers several decent skin care products, you may not want to go to an aesthetician just to purchase their products. In this case, we’d like to recommend Formulyst skin care products. Formulyst believes in long-term skin care treatments rather than short-term cover-ups.  That’s why they use ground-breaking research and cutting-edge technology to formulate advanced skin care treatments.

For example, instead of using SkinScript Glycolic Cleanser (which contains denatured alcohol and irritating fragrant plant oils), we recommend Formulyst Clarifying AHA Cleanser. This cleanser is formulated to gently cleanse and exfoliate the skin while removing dirt and makeup. It contains glycolic acid to help refine pores, control excess oil, and smooth away any surface-level roughness.

If you’re looking for a hydrating moisturizer that will also provide anti-aging benefits, we recommend Formulyst Age Defying Daily Moisturizer. This hydrating anti-aging formula contains humectants like glycerin, gluconolactone, sodium lactate, and Aloe vera leaf juice to draw moisture into the skin. It also contains several emollients, like squalane and caprylic/capric triglyceride from coconut, as well as a couple occlusives like dimethicone to lock in moisture. In addition to these moisturizing ingredients, this formula is rich in antioxidants and a blend of natural complexes – including rosemary extract, sunflower extract, and nourishing watermelon rind. Overall, Formulyst Age Defying Daily Moisturizer helps to keep skin feeling smooth, hydrated, and looking its most radiant.

Skin Script Beta Carotene Papain Renewal Serum Review

This Skin Script serum is said to provide mild exfoliation and is therefore recommended for those with sensitive skin, as well as for pregnant or lactating women because of its natural ingredients. One of the key ingredients in this serum is beta carotene, a precursor of vitamin A. Beta carotene carotene has the ability to increase cell turnover and promote regeneration in the outer layers of the skin. Over time, this can help even out skin tone and add a “glow” to the skin.

Skin Script Beta Carotene Papain Renewal Serum also includes papain, an enzyme extracted from the papaya fruit. Papain works on the surface of the skin to dissolve keratin, a protein found within skin that acts as a glue to keep skin cells together. By dissolving keratin, the papain enzyme helps to exfoliate the top layer of dead skin cells, leaving skin looking brighter with a more even tone. Exfoliating the skin also helps to prevent acne since the build up of dead skin cells can clog pores.

INGREDIENTS

Skin Script Vitamin C/Green Tea Serum Review

This Skin Script serum is said to reduce the appearance of wrinkles while brightening and toning the complexion. As with many Skin Script products, this formula contains a high concentration of witch hazel and denatured alcohol. Witch hazel functions as an astringent while alcohol degreases the skin. However, it should should be noted the tannins in witch hazel can cause irritation and sensitization reactions with some people, and denatured alcohol is well known to cause skin dryness, irritation, and even disruption of the skin barrier.

The Skin Script Vitamin C/Green Tea Serum contains 10% L-ascorbic acid (pure vitamin C) and 2% magnesium ascorbyl phosphate (a vitamin C derivative). Vitamin C is a potent antioxidant, which means it helps to protect the skin against free radical damage. This is important because free radicals can damage collagen and other important cellular components. Damaged collagen manifests as signs of premature skin aging, including wrinkles, lines, and sagging skin. L-ascorbic acid not only protects collagen from free radical damage, but also stimulates the synthesis of new collagen in the skin. By increasing the amount of collagen in the skin, signs of aging will be diminished and the skin will appear more firm. Vitamin C is also known to help brighten the complexion and fade dark spots by inhibiting melanin synthesis.

INGREDIENTS

Skin Script Ageless Hydrating Serum Review

Skin Script Ageless Hydrating Serum is a lightweight facial serum that is said to improve hydration, balance surface lipids, reduce the appearance of wrinkles, improve the health of cell membranes, and plump the skin. As with many Skin Script products, this formula contains a high concentration of witch hazel.  Witch Witch hazel functions as an astringent by cross-linking with keratin proteins, creating an invisible film that can temporarily degrease skin, tighten and tone skin, and minimize the appearance of enlarged pores. But keep in mind that the tannins in witch hazel can cause irritation and sensitization reactions with some people.

A unique ingredient in this Skin Script serum is called Glycoderm (P), which is a combination of water, honey, phospholipids, sphingolipids, and hyaluronic acid. It restores the lipid barrier of the epidermis (uppermost layer of skin) and increases water absorption in the corneocytes (skin cells) by adding natural moisturizing factors (NMFs). Ultimately, this helps to plump and moisturize the skin, as well as  improve the skin’s ability to hold moisture. One of the key anti-aging ingredients in Skin Script Ageless Hydrating Serum is Matrixyl synthe’6, a peptide complex with palmitoyl tripeptide-38. This peptide is derived from the tripeptide KMK naturally found in collagen VI and laminin. In-vitro studies have found palmitoyl tripeptide-38 to have a matrikine-like effect that stimulates the synthesis of collagen I, II, IV, fibronectin, hyaluronic acid, and laminin 5. Ultimately, this may help to reduce signs of aging like fine lines and wrinkles.

INGREDIENTS

Skin Script Mint Refining Toner Review

Like other Skin Script toners, the Mint Refining Toner mostly consists of witch hazel and denatured alcohol. Witch hazel functions as an astringent while alcohol degreases the skin. However, it should be noted the tannins in witch hazel can cause irritation and sensitization reactions with some people, and denatured alcohol alcohol is well known to cause skin dryness, irritation, and even disruption of the skin barrier. In fact, denatured alcohol can dry out the skin so much that the skin will produce more oil over time to compensate for the dryness. This can lead to clogged pores and acne breakouts.

Another ingredient in this Skin Script toner that acts as an astringent is lemongrass oil. It reduces oiliness while temporarily minimizing the appearance pores and tightening wrinkles. However, lemongrass oil is a volatile fragrant oil that contains compounds like limonene and citral that can cause sensitivity when applied to skin. The final ingredient we’d like to highlight is DisaPore 20, which is a combination of lecithin, lysophosphatidic acid and lysolecithin. DisaPore 20 is said to reduce size of pores by improved keratinization and through promoting keratinocyte differentiation.

INGREDIENTS

Skin Script Clarifying Toner Pads Review

The Skin Script Toner Pads are claimed to relieve breakouts while improving the clarity and quality of the skin. These toner pads mostly consist of witch hazel and denatured alcohol. Witch hazel functions as an astringent while alcohol degreases the skin. However, it should be noted the tannins in witch hazel can cause irritation and sensitization reactions with some people, and denatured alcohol is well known to cause skin dryness, irritation, and even disruption of the skin barrier. In fact, denatured alcohol can dry out the skin so much that the skin will produce more oil over time to compensate for the dryness. This can lead to clogged pores and acne breakouts. The Skin Script Toner Pads do contain glycolic acid and salicylic acid, which are both excellent ingredients for exfoliating the skin. But we don’t believe the benefits of these two ingredients outweigh the risk of using these pads due to the high concentration of denatured alcohol. Finally, the brand claims that tea tree oil is a key ingredient in the Skin Script Toner Pads. However, tea tree oil appears last on the ingredient list, which means it is the lowest concentration ingredient in the formula.

INGREDIENTS

Skin Script Cucumber Hydration Toner Review

This Skin Script toner is said to rehydrate the skin, reduce irritation, boost hydration levels, and provide probiotic support to the skin’s acid mantle to support acneic skin. The highest concentration ingredient in this toner is witch hazel. Witch hazel contains tannins that impart astringent properties, resulting in a constricting constricting and drying effect when applied to the skin. They work by cross-linking with keratin proteins, creating an invisible film that can temporarily degrease skin, tighten and tone skin, and minimize the appearance of enlarged pores. However, it should be noted that tannins can cause irritation and sensitization reactions with some people.

The third highest concentration ingredient in the Skin Script Cucumber Hydration Toner is denatured alcohol. Unfortunately, a high concentration of denatured alcohol is problematic for all skin types because this type of alcohol is well known to cause skin dryness, irritation, and even disruption of the skin barrier. While denatured alcohol will immediately degrease the skin, it can actually dry out the skin so much that the skin will produce more oil over time to compensate for the dryness. This can lead to clogged pores and acne breakouts. Due to the high concentration of witch hazel and denatured alcohol, we highly doubt this Skin Script toner will provide the purported benefits.

INGREDIENTS

Skin Script Charcoal Clay Cleanser Review

This Skin Script cleanser is formulated for those with normal and oily skin. It is said to absorb sebum, remove impurities, and help prevent clogged pores. One of the key ingredients in this cleanser is charcoal powder derived from coconut husks. This is an extremely porous, purified powder that acts like a sponge attracting impurities and excess oil from the skin. Another ingredient that absorbs impurities is kaolin, a type of white clay. After being applied to the skin, kaolin helps remove excess oil and dead skin that can clog pores. Kaolin also has anti-inflammatory properties, which can help reduce redness and swelling around existing blemishes. When you wash off the Skin Script Charcoal Clay Cleanser, kaolin also functions as a gentle abrasive to exfoliate the skin.

INGREDIENTS

Skin Script Pomegranate Antioxidant Creamy Cleanser Review

This Skin Script cleanser is a moderately rich cream-based cleansing option for those with normal, dry, rosacea, and sensitive skin. It is said to soothe skin irritation, calm and provide anti-inflammatory effects, enhance cellular turnover, and assist in boosting hydration levels. This cleanser contains safflower and jojoba seed oil as as key ingredients. Using these oils in a cleanser helps to remove oily makeup and sebum because of the chemical principle called “like dissolves like.” Basically, this means that  oils will dissolve other materials that have a similar chemical structure. In addition, the lipids in these oils help to restore the skin’s barrier function.

You may have guessed from the name that pomegranate extract is a key ingredient in the Skin Script Pomegranate Antioxidant Creamy Cleanser. The formula actually includes pomegranate bark extract, not pomegranate fruit or seed extract. The bark extract is an antibacterial, clarifying cleansing agent with antioxidant properties. The final key ingredient in this Skin Script Cleanser is grape seed oil, a lightweight, stable, and moisturizing oil. It has a high affinity with the structure of skin cells, and therefore is absorbed easily without leaving a greasy feeling on the skin. This property also enables grape seed oil to deliver other active ingredients deeper into the skin. Lastly, the linoleic acid found in grape seed oil is thought to reduce inflammation and help oily skin by unclogging pores.

INGREDIENTS

Skin Script Green Tea Citrus Cleanser Review

This Skin Script cleanser is formulated for those with normal, combination, rosacea, and sensitive skin. It is a foaming cleanser that is said to clarify and clean the skin while supporting skin immune functions, maintaining healthy cell function, providing cellular protection from free radicals, and providing anti-inflammatory benefits. Like most most cleansers, the Skin Script Green Tea Citrus Cleanser contains surfactants as the primary ingredients. A surfactant molecule contains one end that is hydrophilic (attracted to water) and one end that is lipophilic (attracted to oil). This allows surfactants to attract and suspends oils, dirt, and other impurities that have accumulated on the skin and wash them away, leaving the skin clean.

The green tea leaf extract in this Skin Script cleanser may help with acne by inhibiting destructive bacteria growth while maintaining healthy bacteria colonies to prevent acne breakouts. Green tea leaf extract also contains a potent antioxidant called Epigallocatechin Gallate (EGCG). EGCG helps to protect the skin from free radicals, the unstable molecules that contribute to the formation of premature wrinkles and fine lines on the skin. Lastly, there are several citrus extracts in this cleanser, which may provide antioxidant and antibacterial effects. However, citrus extracts are also known to cause skin irritation and photosensitivity in some people.

INGREDIENTS

Skin Script Raspberry Refining Cleanser Review

This Skin Script cleanser is formulated for those with oily and acne prone skin. It is a foaming cleanser that is said to clarify, exfoliate, reduce oil, provide surface renewal and resurfacing, and lessen future breakouts. The key ingredients in this cleanser are 2% glycolic acid and 2% salicylic acid. acid. Glycolic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) that exfoliates the skin by targeting corneocytes (dead skin cells that make up the top layers of skin) in a process called corneocyte desquamation. By enhancing their breakdown and increasing the separation of skin cells, the rate of cell turnover is increased. Ultimately, this helps to improve uneven skin texture, resulting in smoother, softer skin.

Salicylic acid is a beta hydroxy acid (BHA) that penetrates into the pore to break up impacted debris and clear skin follicles to relieve blackheads and lessen future breakouts. It reduces discomfort thanks to the salicin compound and softens keratinized barrier cells, thereby promoting exfoliation. The final key ingredient in the Skin Script Raspberry Refining Cleanser is raspberry fruit extract, which is an antioxidant, astringent, and anti-inflammatory ingredient that is excellent for acne.

I went for a facial treatment and was advised to use skin script for my daily routine. I bought the Green Tea Citrus Cleanser, unfortunately after a few days of use I have had an allergic reaction all over my face and neck. I can’t figure out what the ingredient is that has caused such a reaction, perhaps a combination of the microdermabrasion / enzyme treatment I had beforehand could have caused a hype sensitive reaction. Never happened to me before when using a facial product though. The aesthetician has been very helpful in trying to get my skin back to health.

My aesthetician gave me skin script and I have had no complaints. I have sensitive skin. I use the hydrating moisturizer, and the Pomegranate cleanser. Skin Script has been way better than any OTC product. Do wish it was a TAD less expensive though. It’s defi cheaper than a lot of stuff out there. I wonder about trying other professional skin care lines… if I like something I try to stick to it because my skin is very picky.
