SKIN CARE REVIEWS

Diane von Furstenberg once said, “Your wrinkles reflect the roads you have taken; they form the map of your life.” We whole heartedly agree but there’s one road map that can come along well before you need it, and that is neck wrinkles. The skin on the neck and décolletage is some of the thinnest on the body, which means this area is prone to showing the signs of aging first. It is also susceptible to crepey skin as well as turkey neck.

One person who was not willing to embrace the premature roadmap on her neck is entrepreneur Gigi Howard, the founder of SiO Beauty. While in her 20s, Howard started to see wrinkles crop up on her chest while her face remained youthful. She was a side sleeper and loved to nap, and Howard adopted wearing scarves and turtlenecks to hide her chest wrinkles- until she decided to do something about it. After trying countless products, a doctor friend introduced her to the benefits of medical grade silicone, which is often used to heal scars. According to the company, after 180 prototypes, two clinical trials and four years of development, the SiO patch was born. Here’s a look at SiO’s patches, how they work and are they right for you?

What are the Best Skin Care Products of 2019?

What Is SiO Beauty?

SiO Beauty launched with a cleavage wrinkle reducing patch in 2016 and has now expanded to include a full range of facial patches. SiO (pronounced “see-oh”) sells silicone patches for just about every part of the face, including eyes, neck, brows and mouth. The company also sells larger patches which can be used on the body, hands, knees and elbows.

What Products Are In The SiO Beauty Collection?

SiO sells medical grade silicone patches which are designed to be used on the face, neck and body. Specific patches include the SiO Face Lift, which includes one BrowLift Patch, two Eye & Smile Patches as well as one NeckLift Patch. Also available are the SiO BrowLift, which is placed above the forehead, and the SiO Handlift for the back of the hand. Another option is the SiO Elbow & Knee Rescue Lift. The Men’s line includes SiO for Him Facelift, and SiO for Him FaceLift. SiO also sells the Décolleté Cleansing Discs which are meant to cleanse and smooth out the skin before applying a SiO patch.

How Does the SiO Patch Work?

SiO’s patches are made from medical grade silicone, and are designed to help reduce the appearance of wrinkles in both the short and long term. According to SiO, the patches work by “creating a micro-climate between the skin and the silicone. This closed, breathable environment is called an occlusion by doctors and scientists.” Occlusion helps draw moisture up through the layers of the skin, which makes skin look smoother and plumper. As a result, wrinkles look “filled in.” SiO also says that the patches help encourage collagen production; collagen is the building block of skin and is what gives skin a plump look.

According to the company, the patches also help skin in a different way. Your sleep position can also contribute to wrinkling, so applying the patch on areas such as the décolletage can help keep it smooth and wrinkle free while you sleep. According to SiO, each patch can be used up to 15 times and the results are cumulative meaning there’s an immediate benefit after using a patch as well as long term results.

How Should SiO Patches Be Applied?

The product should be applied to clean, dry skin so that the patch can adhere properly. The next step is to remove the plastic film from the patch and apply it to the skin. For best results, it should stay in place for six to eight hours. After each use, the patches should be rinsed in water and stored in a storage shield.

What Ingredients Are in SiO Beauty Products?

The patches are made from 100% medical grade silicone. The adhesive contains dimethicone, silica, hydrogen dimethicone and stearic acid.

How Much Do SiO Beauty Products Cost?

Prices range from $29.95 for the Eye & Smile Lift (four pack) as well as the Neck Lift. The Facelift Pack, Superlift Pack and SkinPad are all $49.95, while the Eye & Smile SuperLift Pack is $34.95. The SiO for Him Eye & Smile Lift (two pack) is $14.95, and the Décolleté Cleansing Discs are $24.95. These prices are for products ordered on a monthly auto delivery; one time purchases are slightly higher.

Where Can I Buy SiO Beauty Products?

SiO patches are available for purchase on the company website, Amazon, Barneys department store as well as various spas and doctor’s offices.

Are SIO Beauty Products Tested on Animals?

The company says that it does not test on animals.

Do SiO Beauty Products Work?

When deciding if a product is right for you and worth trying, it is always helpful to look into customer reviews and feedback. SiO says that it has tested its product on over 200 women under the supervision of a dermatologist, and their clinical trials measured what women thought about the results, as well as what their skin actually showed in terms of hydration, reduced roughness, wrinkle depth, and photodamage repair. SiO says that nine out of 10 women found their skin was significantly smoother in the morning; 85% of women said they would use SiO instead of injectables or fillers; 88% of women felt that their overall appearance improved; 98% of women said that SiO was comfortable to sleep in and 85% of women said that their forehead lines and crow’s feet were softened and less noticeable than the day prior.

A writer at InStyle magazine reviewed the face patches in 2018. Their conclusion? The writer found that the patches “stick to your skin like any other face patch, but there is a noticeable difference in their smooth silicone texture and weight. They don’t feel heavy, but more like they’re slightly tightening that area of your face.” The reviewer couldn’t wear them for the full eight hours but found that “After I peeled them off, I was shocked to see that my defined lines around the corners of my mouth were smoothed out and far less visible than they were before, and my skin felt tight and plump” but “By the end of the day, my wrinkles had returned, and I was expecting that—though again, over time they’re meant to have lasting benefits.” Their conclusion was that “I can’t say they’d be anywhere as effective as a surgical face lift, obviously, but I’d say it’s an option for anyone who’s scared of needles, going under the knife, or who just isn’t into or ready for that step.”

The blog Chemistry Cachet reviewed the patches in 2018 . “I think these silicone patches have some great benefits both short term and long term. Short term, you can definitely see results the next morning. Especially the eye area! You can even wear them for a few hours and see results.”

Actress Busy Philips tried them out for an Instagram Story recently. “I wore them all night and I look the same,” she said. She didn’t like the creases the patches left from sleeping in them all night, but said that her skin looked smoother.

The Beauty Eye & Smile Lift has over 530 reviews on Amazon, with a 2.8 out of 5 star rating. Thirty-four percent of reviewers gave it five stars, and 37% gave it one star. Some Amazon reviewers raved “This is an absolutely GREAT product! I’m very happy with the results” and “The SiO NeckLift patch is awesome! It was very easy to use and comfortable to wear. I saw a difference in the fine lines / wrinkles on my neck in just one use which made me more excited to use it consistently.”

Those who gave it one star complained that it did nothing, the patches didn’t stick or it irritated their skin. “This product is terrible, it doesn’t stick longer than a few days, and then basically becomes unusable. Terrible product at an outrageous price.”

What Are Some Alternatives to SIO Beauty?

SIO Beauty may not be the right choice for everyone, because it may not react well with your skin or the price tag is too high – or perhaps you’re allergic to silicone. If you’re looking for skincare products to address the signs of aging, consider Formulyst and Advanced Dermatology.

Formulyst’s philosophy is long-term and effective skincare. The brand wants to help its customers achieve their best looking skin, rather than covering it up with makeup. The comprehensive line of products targets everything from wrinkles to dark spots and dry skin.

Formulyst’s Pro-Collagen Serum contains a potent mix of peptides and proteins, derived from natural ingredients such as seaweed, wheat and soy. A few drops of this hydrating serum helps to minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

The star ingredient in Formulyst’s Anti-Aging Night Cream is the gold-standard of wrinkle fighters – retinol. This vitamin A derivative helps tackle fine lines, crow’s feet as well as dark spots. What makes this formula different is that it contains a high dose of retinol as well as ultra-soothing and hydrating safflower seed oil and jojoba, which lock moisture in and help soothe the skin.

Fans of skincare kits, which take all the guesswork out of creating your own regimen, should try Advanced Dermatology. This no nonsense brand offers a pared down approach to skincare. The packaging is simple and streamlined, and the products bring skincare back to the basics. The kit contains just six essential items including a daily cleanser; serum; anti-wrinkle firming treatment; night cream; day cream and an eye cream. In other words, everything you need to achieve your best possible looking skin.
