What Are The Key Ingredients in Fruit of The Earth Aloe Vera Gel?

As you already know, the key ingredient in Fruit of The Earth Aloe Vera Gel is Aloe vera leaf juice. Perhaps you already know that Aloe can benefit the skin after you’ve spent a little too much time in the sun thanks to its cooling and soothing properties. But how exactly does Aloe help the skin? Let’s get into the science.

First, we should point out that despite its thick, gel-like texture, Aloe vera is actually composed of 99 to 99.5% water! The high water content soothes the skin and helps to increase hydration.

Plus, Aloe vera contains a rich supply of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs), a class of sugar molecules that help bind moisture to the skin.

GAGs also assist in wound healing, which is why Aloe vera is great for minor cuts and irritation. An animal study published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology  found that topical Aloe vera had a positive influence on the synthesis of GAGs and thereby beneficially modulated wound healing.

Additional nutrients found in Aloe vera include antioxidants like beta carotene, vitamin C, and vitamin E. Antioxidants limit oxidative damage caused by free radicals, the unstable molecules that contribute to the formation of premature wrinkles and fine lines on the skin.

There’s also enzymes in the Aloe vera plant that help to promote mild exfoliation when applied to the skin. Specifically, enzymes work by dissolving keratin, a protein that acts as a glue to keep the dead skin cells that make up the stratum corneum together. By dissolving keratin, these enzymes help to exfoliate the top layer of dead skin cells, leaving skin looking brighter with a more even tone.

Despite all the benefits of Aloe vera leaf juice, we want you to know that Fruit of The Earth Aloe Vera Gel is not 100% Aloe vera. There are several additives in this formula, which include:

  • Triethanolamine
  • Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E)
  • Carbomer
  • Tetrasodium EDTA
  • DMDM Hydantoin
  • Diazolidinyl Urea

Of these ingredients, we’re most concerned with DMDM hydantoin and diazolidinyl urea.

Both DMDM hydantoin and diazolidinyl urea are preservatives that are known to release formaldehyde, which could lead to allergic reactions and irritation, according to the EWG’s Skin Deep Cosmetic Database.

Fruit of The Earth Aloe Vera Gel Reviews

Unfortunately, the brand does not display customer reviews on their website, so we had to turn to Amazon.com to evaluate Fruit of The Earth Aloe Vera Gel reviews.

After more than 6,000 customer reviews, Fruit of the Earth Aloe Vera Gel has earned an average rating of 4.7 out of 5 stars.

There are many 5-star reviews from customers who find the gel very soothing on burns, and also great to use on a regular basis as a moisturizer.

One Fruit of The Earth Aloe Vera Gel review says, “I love this aloe vera gel, and have purchased it many times. I use it when I burn myself, and have never had a minor burn which didn’t improve when I used it, usually not developing any further, or reversing.”

A similar 5-star review says, “This is the only Aloe vera gel I will ever purchase. I have been using it for 30 years. It’s got healing properties, but I also use it over serums and treatments on my face, because it has never made me break out. It’s great for after shaving too.”

And here’s a review from a customer who uses Fruit of The Earth Aloe Vera Gel as a daily moisturizer says, “On the advice of my dermatologist, I stopped using Cerave cream and started using this product every morning as a full-face moisturizer. When I’m active, the Cerave was always getting in my eyes and stinging – not so with the Aloe, doesn’t bother me at all. Easy to apply, and a little goes a long way. After 2 months, I think I see and feel real improvement in my complexion and skin issues.”

However, there are a handful of negative reviews for the Fruit of The Earth Aloe Vera Gel from customers who were disappointed because of the additives in this product.

For example, one review says, “I thought this was too good to be true, and it is. I did get two 24 oz bottles, but when inspecting the ingredients I noticed the second ingredient is approved by the FDA, but suggested to be used in small doses and never daily. As I got this product to make a shave gel it is incredibly unacceptable. I thought about returning this product and just saying nothing but they prompted me to write a review so here you go. This is mostly toxic ingredients mixed with some aloe and vitamin E. Use at your own risk.”

And a similar review says, “What it wants you to believe: 100% gel! Pure! No color added! Contains no alcohol!… Oh and also, Aloe Vera! All this is true but “MISLEADING”! What it actually is: There are hard to pronounce and 100% pure chemical ingredients “added” to the Aloe Vera. After googling, some of these chemicals should not be used on a regular basis and rinsed off.”
