The Story Behind Bioderma

Bioderma is a skin care brand owned by parent company NAOS. French pharmacist and biologist Jean-Noël Thorel created NAOS based on his view that the skin is a living ecosystem that constantly interacts with its environment and that changes over time. The brand’s approach to skin care is based on ecobiology — a contraction of the words “ecosystem” and “biology” — the idea that the ecosystems of our skin (biology, physiology), of individuals (lifestyle) and of our planet are inextricably linked and interact with one another. Based on these principles, Bioderma skin care products help the skin adapt to its environment and use its own resources to correct its imbalances, in order to recover its natural functions.

What are the Best Skin Care Products of 2021?

Bioderma understands that the skin is affected every single day by things like pollution, weather conditions, UV rays, illness, medicated treatments, aging, and more. All of these factors weaken and unbalance the skin, exceeding its natural self-defenses. Ultimately, this leads to sensitivity, dryness, and/or signs of aging. Each person’s skin reacts in its own way, depending on its DNA. Bioderma utilizes all its expertise in skin biology and ecosystem intelligence to understand all the types of skin sensitivity, and to provide skin care products that are tailored to each skin dysfunction. In this review, we’ll discuss a few of the brand’s best selling products, key ingredients, Bioderma reviews from real customers, and more.

The Top 5 Best Selling Bioderma Skin Care Products

Bioderma skin care products are categorized by skin concern into five different lines: Sensibio (sensitive skin), Atoderm (very dry, sensitive skin), Sebium (combination to oily skin), Hydrabio (dehydrated, sensitive skin), and Cicabio (dry skin, prone to irritations). The brand also has a line of sun care products (Photoderm). You could shop Bioderma skin care products based on your skin concern, or you could start with one of the following best selling products.

Sensibio H2O Micellar Water
Perhaps the most popular Bioderma skin care product is the Sensibio H2O Micellar Water. This cleansing water is said to gently cleanse skin from impurities, fine particles, and pollution, while effortlessly removing makeup from face and eyes. The micellar technology developed by Laboratoire Bioderma, the creator of micellar technology, is inspired by the cellular lipids found in the skin. Formulated with a physiological pH of around 5.5 and highly purified and pharmaceutical-grade water, Sensibio H2O respects the skin’s biological balance, which is essential to maintain healthy-looking skin.

Hydrabio Serum
Bioderma Hydrabio Serum is a lightweight serum for those with dehydrated skin. It is said to increase moisture in your skin up to 57% within 15 minutes only through the brand’s patented Aquagenium complex. This complex targets water channels to help retain water in the stratum corneum. In addition to providing hydration, Bioderma Hydrabio Serum smooths the skin texture while restoring the appearance of radiance.

Atoderm Intensive Baume
Bioderma Atoderm Intensive Baume is a moisture replenishing body balm that provides very dry skin with instant comfort. This fragrance-free moisturizer instantly soothes the skin and reduces feelings of discomfort. The brand’s patented Lipigenium complex, composed of biolipids naturally found in the epidermis, helps to improve the skin barrier. Bioderma Atoderm Intensive Baume is recognized by the National Eczema Association.

Sebium Foaming Gel
This Bioderma face wash is said to gently cleanse and purify the skin without drying it. It is recommended for those with combination to oily skin. The formula contains zinc and copper sulphates to cleanse the epidermis, reduce the appearance of irregularities, and absorb excess sebum. Its ultra-gentle, soap-free formula respects the skin’s balance and maintains the optimal pH of the skin.

Sensibio Foaming Gel
This Bioderma face wash is a mild, soap-free cleansing gel for those with sensitive skin that is prone to discomfort. Enriched with the gentle surfactant coco glucoside, an ingredient that mimics the skin structure, Sensibio Foaming Gel has lipid-restoring and moisturizing properties.

What Are The Key Ingredients In Bioderma Skin Care Products?

Did you know that NAOS Research invented no-rinse cleansing and make-up removing micellar water? Micelles are invisible cleansing micro-droplets that have the ability to capture impurities while preserving the skin’s natural protective film. This technology is used in the brand’s most popular product, the Bioderma Sensibio H2O Micellar Water. In addition to micellar technology, Bioderma uses a few of the same key ingredients throughout their product line, including xylitol, fructooligosaccharides, and rhamnose. Let’s take a closer look at these key ingredients and how they may benefit your skin.

Xylitol is a key ingredient in all of the best selling Bioderma skin care products that we introduced in the previous section. Xylitol is a sugar alcohol that functions as a humectant due to its molecular structure with several hydrophilic (water loving) groups. This structure enables xylitol to attract moisture and draw that moisture into the upper layers of skin in order to improve hydration. Humectants like xylitol may also provide temporary anti-aging effects because the extra hydration is extra volume, which effectively plumps out the skin and makes lines and wrinkles less noticeable. However, this effect is transient – as soon as the moisture content in skin decreases, lines and wrinkles will return to normal size.

You’ll find fructooligosaccharides in several Bioderma skin care products, including Sensibio H2O Micellar Water, Hydrabio Serum, Sebium Foaming Gel, and more. Fructooligosaccharides refers to a short chain of fructose molecules that function as prebiotics. Prebiotics are an energy source for probiotics, the good bacteria that naturally live on the surface of skin. These bacteria make up the skin’s microbiome. When the skin’s microbiome is in balance, it protects the skin from external factors that can lead to redness, dryess, and a weakened skin barrier. Prebiotics like fructooligosaccharides work by fueling the probiotics, which promotes optimal performance. Ultimately, this ensures that the skin has what it needs to keep its barrier smooth, intact, and healthy.

Rhamnose is a naturally-derived sugar from the birch plant, clinically-proven to act on skin structure and correct the effects of skin aging. In one study published in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science,
rhamnose was shown to promote a significant increase of pro-collagen I expression at papillary dermis level and considerable epidermis thickening. Ultimately, this means that rhamnose can help the skin to appear more firm with less noticeable signs of aging.

Bioderma Reviews

Bioderma reviews on the brand’s website are very positive, with most products receiving 4 and 5 star ratings. The majority of Bioderma reviews confirm that these products work well, even for those with very dry and sensitive skin.

For example, one Bioderma review says, “I really enjoyed using this Bioderma Sensibio H2O Micellar Water. It didn’t leave an oily residue on my skin. It took off all my makeup easily. It even worked on my waterproof makeup. I used it with my makeup eraser and it performed better than any makeup wipes or cleanser I’ve used. It did have a very light scent to it. But that did go away after a second or two. I’m definitely going to be looking into purchasing some more of this. I wasn’t a fan of Micellar waters before. They always left icky residue behind or didn’t remove all my makeup. But this really did its job for me. I was really glad I got to try this.”

While there aren’t many negative Bioderma reviews, we did notice a few from customers who experienced negative reactions after using these products. For example, one review for the Sensibio H2O Micellar Water says, “I found this product to be highly irritating to my skin as it left red spots and dried my skin out immediately after use”.

What are some alternatives to Bioderma?

Overall, we think that Bioderma products are formulated well, and this skin care brand could be a good choice if you have very dry and/or irritated skin. But if you’re looking for anti-aging skin care products, we think there are other brands out there with products specifically formulated to target signs of aging. One brand that we recommend is Formulyst because they use high concentrations of active ingredients and leave out fillers and unnecessary additives.

One example is Formulyst’s Pro-Collagen Serum, a lightweight, restorative serum specifically formulated for aging skin that has experienced a loss of collagen. Think of collagen as the scaffolding of the skin; it gives structure, support and suppleness. But collagen production naturally slows down as we age, causing wrinkles and fine lines to appear. Formulyst’s Pro-Collagen Serum contains a highly concentrated mix of peptides and proteins, derived from seaweed, wheat and soy, to help tackle these signs of aging. Apply a few drops of this hydrating serum to help skin look smoother and younger.

There’s no need to compromise when it comes to finding skincare that is effective and safe. Carrot & Stick takes a tough love approach to skincare, perfectly balancing the power of plants with cutting edge science. Not only is Carrot & Stick good for your skin, it is also good for the environment as the formulas skip harmful chemicals as well as the preservatives, emulsifiers and thickeners commonly found in skincare products.

Bioderma Photoderm Max Review

For sensitive skin types, finding the right sunscreen can be an incredible challenge. Certain chemical filters can cause irritation and some formulas can lead to more harm than good. But that doesn’t mean that you should avoid sunscreen all together. Instead, you should opt for sensitive skin friendly formulas like the BioDerma Photoderm Max. This product was developed for those who have a hard time tolerating traditional sunscreen formulas. With an SPF of 50, this product protects against UVA and UVB rays, preventing sun damage for negatively affecting your skin. Additionally, this product also contains Cellular Bioprotection, a patented technology that is entirely unique to Bioderma’s product line. Together, these two factors help to ensure that you’re skin remains happy and calm, while also staying completely protected from damage throughout the day.

Bioderma Hydrabio Serum Review

Bioderma is one of the most well known and well loved french pharmacy brands on the market, and for good reason. Bioderma offers complete, well formulated ranges for all different skin types including sensitive, oily, combination and dry. But even more so than that, Bioderma has also extended their range to include different skin concerns. For example, the Bioderma Hydrabio line was designed to serve sensitive skin types that are especially prone to dehydration specifically. The Bioderma Hydrabio Serum specifically was designed to really target this everyday surface dehydration, as well as the damage that can be caused by pollution, stress and harsh environmental conditions. This product contains a minimalistic ingredients list that benefits the skin without overwhelming it. Key ingredients include hyaluronic acid and apple seed extract. With all this said, this product does contain dimethicone, so if you know that you’re sensitive to these ingredients, this may not be the best option for you.

INGREDIENTS

Bioderma Sensibio H2O

Individuals looking for a gentle makeup remover for sensitive skin may have heard about Bioderma Sensibio H2O and even come across some positive reviews for this product. Developed by a company called Bioderma, this face cleanser is touted as a gentle way to remove makeup without causing undue skin irritation and over drying the skin. One of the ways Bioderma Sensibio H2O is claimed to achieve this is through a specialized formula that contains lipids and is meant to mimic the natural membranes of skin cells. In this way, makeup and oil may be removed from the skin without creating a strong interaction or loss of moisture. In many ways, this approach follows the general philosophy of Bioderma, to use biology at the service of dermatology. However, to better understand how this cleanser works, we need to consider its ingredients and the feedback available in Bioderma Sensibio H2O reviews.

INGREDIENTS

Bioderma Crealine

A gentle product that cleanses the skin and removes makeup can be a beneficial addition to any skin care kit, with one possible choice being Bioderma Crealine, also referred to as Bioderma Sensibio H2O. This cleanser is designed to remove a number of impurities from the skin, including excess oil, cosmetics residue, and other impurities. Bioderma Crealine is one of many products offered by the company, which was founded in 1977 by Jean-Noël Thorel. Today, the manufacturer offers lines for the face, body, hair, and scalp for people of all ages. Bioderma Crealine is formulated for normal to dry skin, including sensitive skin.

Bioderm RX Review

Made famous by their appearance on Shark Tank, the Bioderm RX Anti-Aging Moisturizer has created quite a bit of stir in the beauty industry. But there have been some reviews who have called out the brand for their efficacy, as well as their business practices. So what should you know before going into this product? According to the brand, Bioderm RX works to target all of the major signs of aging including fine lines and wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, dullness and dryness as well. The key ingredients in this formula that target these primary skin concerns including argireline NP, matrixyl 3000, granpowder lumiere DP, hyaluronic acid, and lavandox. With all of that said, one of the more unique aspects of this product is actually the application instructions. Although this product is a creamy, moisturizer-like texture, the brand recommends applying this product, allowing it to sink in and then topping off with a toner to complete your skincare routine for the evening. Finally, getting into the rumors of poor business practices, there are some reviews out there that have reported hidden fees in free trials and order cancellations without refunds, so we do recommend to proceed with caution in regards to ordering this product online.
