According to the American Academy of Dermatology, acne is the most common skin condition in the United States, affecting up to 50 million people, from teens to adults. While some people have success with drugstore products, for others it can feel like a never ending battle. Entrepreneur Camille Chulick falls into that category. In interviews, Chulick says she had a 16 year struggle with breakouts which was the inspiration for her skincare line, Averr Aglow.

What Is Averr Aglow?

Averr Aglow is an Atlanta-based skincare line that launched in 2015, and was formerly called Hello Aglow. The direct to consumer company is designed for adult women with acne. As founder Chulick explained in a statement, “I’ve been through it all, from spending literally thousands of dollars on over-the-counter and expensive skincare products and countless visits to dermatologists to drastic methods like birth control, prescription drugs, strict diets, clean eating, and supplements. After battling with cystic acne for 16 years, it started to feel like it was something that couldn’t be won,” Chulick said.

Frustrated by the lack of results, Chulick said she dove into her own research and spoke to  doctors, dermatologists and estheticians which helped educate her approach to acne. “Once I understood, I then saw all the flaws in everything I was trying,” she said.  Chulick and her husband decided to formulate their own natural-based skincare products. Chulick said she never intended to create a skincare brand, but “after seeing the results on my own skin, my friends started to ask me to share products with them and eventually we started creating batches in our kitchen about four years ago.” Since those first batches, and subsequent tweaking of formulas, Chulick said the company has helped over 20,000 women.

What is the Averr Aglow Philosophy?

As Chulick explains in a press release, “… the problem with 99 percent of skincare products is that they treat acne as if it’s caused by customers’ dirty habits. It tries to remove the bad bacteria at all costs.” Averr Aglow’s philosophy takes a different approach. Chulick states that those with breakout prone skin should do these five things: eliminate bad bacteria; help good bacteria flourish; exfoliate dead skin gently; balance sebum and nourish the skin with nutrients to help it become healthy and glowing.

What Does Averr Aglow Sell?

Averr Aglow sells skincare aimed at women with acne, and products are sold individually as well as in kits. The most comprehensive is the Averr Aglow Bundle, which zeroes in on breakouts, blackheads and blemishes. It includes Clarifying Hydration Dew, Clear Skin Elixir, Luminous Complexion Toner, Radiant Cleansing Nectar, Perfectionist Overnight Serum, Illuminating Essence Exfoliating Mask, Flawless Nourishment Cream and Clear Gelée Makeup Remover.

The Clear Skin Kit includes four products–  the Clarifying Hydration Dew, Radiant Cleansing Nectar, Clear Skin Elixir, and Flawless Nourishment Cream and comes with organic cotton pads.  The Luminous Clear Skin Set has one additional product, the Luminous Complexion Toner.

How Much Do Averr Aglow Products Cost?

The nine piece Averr Aglow Bundle is currently selling for $351, while the five piece Luminous Clear Skin Set is $189.99 and the four piece Clear Skin Set is $149. The Perfectionist Overnight Serum retails for $79, while lower priced products include the Flawless Nourishment Cream ($44) and Completely Clear Gelée Makeup Remover ($25).

How Should Averr Aglow Products Be Used?

Averr Aglow suggests a regimen for morning and evening. In YouTube tutorials, Chulick said the morning routine should start with about eight to 10 sprays of Clarifying Hydration Dew to wet the skin.  The next step is to take a cotton pad soaked with Cleansing Nectar and buff it over the skin, which provides an exfoliation. The toner is an optional next step before the Flawless Nourishing Cream. The routine can be finished with a spray of Clarifying Hydration Dew.

The Evening Routine can start with a separate cleansing step or users can just begin the routine, which will leave the face clean.  The Evening regimen begins with about 10 sprays of the Hydration Dew to wet the skin before applying the Cleansing Nectar with a cotton pad. The next step is the Overnight Elixir, the workhorse of the routine. It’s a mask that can be applied all over the face or as a spot treatment. In an Averr Aglow Youtube tutorial, Chulick said that it dries with a tacky feel and looks a bit chalky on the skin.

Is Averr Aglow Cruelty Free?

Yes. On its website, Averr Aglow states, “No, we do not test on animals. All of our products and ingredients are cruelty-free.

What Ingredients Are in Averr Aglow?

Averr Aglow products are formulated with a mix of natural and organic ingredients, including some commonly seen in acne products. The Clear Skin Elixir is formulated with zinc oxide, witch hazel, French pink clay, chamomile extract and grape seed, jojoba, tea tree and grapefruit oil, among others. Some of the key ingredients in the Luminous Complexion Toner are rosemary leaf extract and comfrey, while the Exfoliating Mask contains Icelandic volcanic ash, silica and cloudberry oil. The Perfectionist Overnight Serum is powered by organic botanical oils, including acai, prickly pear and kukui seed oil.

Does Averr Aglow Work?

Skincare is never a one-sized fits all approach. What works for one person as their miracle solution may do nothing for you, which is why a little trial and error and a look into reviews is always helpful.

As a relatively new brand, editorial write ups of Averr Aglow are scarce. A BuzzFeed writer included the Cleansing Nectar in a round up called “Just 8 Really Good Products That Work Great For Thirtysomething Skin.” The writer noted “This cleansing nectar works wonders when it comes to getting mascara, foundation, and eyeliner off. Plus it leaves my skin feeling soft, soft, soft.”

A few beauty aficionados posted about it on a Reddit thread in 2018. Reddit users praised the packaging- “Their packaging is freaking gorgeous, it makes me want to buy everything too lol. Ingredients are mostly pretty good too, though they seem to be very fond of grapefruit and bergamot EO’s which is a shame,” wrote I Am Multitudes. A few reviews pop up on Trust Pilot. Rocio Bautista had positive results from Averr Aglow: “So far I am very satisfied with the product. It makes my skin feel great and once the purging process was over I can see my skin is beginning to heal and break outs are under control.” Maya Ayam wrote “My skin improved a lot after 2 months of using the kit! Super happy.”

Some users have also posted their feedback on the brand’s Instagram and Facebook pages. Kelly English Holthe wrote on the brand’s Facebook page, “Give it 2 to 3 months! I followed their directions and saw how it worked on me…” Juliagrant8 wrote on Instagram “okay this stuff is actually amazing I can vouch for it. Usually when I start using a new product I break out, but that didn’t even happen. My skin has been so glowy and soft and my acne has gotten so much better, and acne scars have lightened up a lot.”

Others noted that they had positive results but had to get through a purging stage first where skin looked worse before it got better. As @adrianalicalzii wrote, “I don’t use their stuff alone but I’m so thrilled with the progress…It’s only been a couple weeks so I’m still in the purge period and got one giant pimple, but it’s almost gone already. Twice as fast at least as normal.

Some of the complaints on social media have to do with bottles shattering if they are dropped on the floor, or faulty spray nozzles. Herminaw felt that the cleanser was too oily. “Unfortunately I don’t like the step 2 Cleanser. Way too oily. I woke in the morning my face feels like Crisco.” Serenagopal had an issue with product consistency. “One  issue I had with the Radiant Cleansing Cectar is that when it got to the bottom 1/4 of the bottle it was more of the orange oil than the clear liquid and when I applied it, it left my face feeling more oily than refreshed like it did before when I first started the bottle….” Other users commented that they wished the Averr Aglow products didn’t have citrus oil. Some users broke out, like Cea.sophia. “I used this and it broke me out. $200 wasted…”

What Are Some Alternatives to Averr Aglow ?

Although some people may have had success with Averr Aglow, it may not work for everyone. Perhaps it did nothing for your skin or you’re looking for products that can do more.  There are a few other brands to consider.

Formulyst’s philosophy is long-term and effective skincare and the brand’s philosophy is that age is just a number. That number isn’t necessarily the one on your driver’s license, but a numerical sequence that makes up a skincare formula suited for your skin type and needs. Each skincare concern is assigned a number, such as 1 for dryness, 3 for fine lines. Your personal combination will be just as unique as you (and your skin) are.  Formulyst makes it easy – all you have to do is find your formula, and follow the numbers.

The ideal cleanser is one that gives skin a deep clean and whisks away dirt and makeup without leaving it too dry. Formulyst’s Clarifying AHA Cleanser contains alpha hydroxy acids (AHA) derived from citrus and botanical extracts to help dissolve dead skin cells and revel fresh, smooth feeling skin without overdrying it.

The safest way to get rid of a blemish is to resist popping it, and dry it out instead with a dab of Formulyst’s Blemish Clearing Complex. It contains a whole cocktail of bacteria fighting, pimple drying ingredients including zinc oxide, salicylic acid and camphor.

Fans of skincare kits, which take all the guesswork out of creating your own regimen, should try Advanced Dermatology. This no nonsense brand offers a pared down approach to skincare. The packaging is simple and streamlined, and the products bring skincare back to the basics. The kit contains just six essential items including a daily cleanser; serum; anti-wrinkle firming treatment; night cream; day cream and an eye cream. In other words, everything you need to achieve your best possible looking skin.
