What are the key ingredients in Vichy LiftActiv products?

All Vichy Skin Care products, including the Vichy LiftActiv line, include Vichy Thermal Water due to its ability to improve skin quality and promote healing. This water is unique due to its 15 essential minerals, some of which include iron, potassium, calcium, and manganese. The mineralizing water has been shown to soothe the skin, rebalance pH, and protect against external aggressors like pollutants and weather. Now let’s take a closer look at the key ingredients used in the best selling Vichy LiftActiv products we introduced above. 

Vichy LiftActiv Serum 10 features 10% rhamnose as one of the key ingredients in this serum. Rhamnose is a naturally-derived sugar from the birch plant, clinically-proven to act on skin structure and correct the effects of skin aging. In one study, rhamnose was shown to promote a significant increase of pro-collagen I expression at papillary dermis level and considerable epidermis thickening. Ultimately, this means that rhamnose can help the skin to appear more firm with less noticeable signs of aging.

Unfortunately, Vichy LiftActiv Serum 10 contains a pretty high concentration of denatured alcohol. The problem with this type of alcohol is that, at first, it seems like it’s benefitting the skin. Initially, alcohol gives products a quick-drying finish, immediately degreases the skin, and imparts a weightless feel. Plus, Vichy combines alcohol with ingredients like glycerin and silicones to provide temporarily anti-aging benefits. You see, alcohol tightens the skin, glycerin hydrates the skin and thereby plumps skin, and silicones form a thin, invisible film that can help disguise signs of aging. However, these effects are temporary and will disappear once you wash off the product. Pretty tricky, right?

The major problem with using high concentrations of alcohol is that this ingredient is well known to cause skin dryness, irritation, and even disruption of the skin barrier. In fact, alcohol can dry out the skin so much that the skin will produce more oil over time to compensate for the dryness. This can lead to clogged pores and breakouts. 

The formulation of Vichy LiftActiv Supreme is very similar to Serum 10. This day cream includes rhamnose as a key ingredient, but in a lower concentration than Serum 10. And once again, Vichy combines a high concentration of denatured alcohol with glycerin and plenty of silicones (dimethicone, dimethicone/vinyl dimethicone crosspolymer, and more) to give the illusion of anti-aging effects. 

Vichy Liftactiv Vitamin C Serum contains 15% pure vitamin C (ascorbic acid), which is well known to provide several benefits to the skin, such as protecting against free radicals, stimulating collagen production, fading dark spots, and improving uneven skin tone. The serum also contains hydrolyzed hyaluronic acid, a low molecular weight version of hyaluronic acid. Hydrolyzed hyaluronic acid will help to attract moisture to the skin, resulting in smoother, softer skin with decreased wrinkles and a more plump appearance. However, the Vichy Liftactiv Vitamin C Serum contains denatured alcohol as the third highest concentration ingredient in this formula. In fact, this serum contains more denatured alcohol than hydrolyzed hyaluronic acid, which may defeat the purpose of even using hydrolyzed hyaluronic acid.
