Known for duping more expensive products in the industry, this brand really appeals to those who love the idea of high-end skincare, but can’t really get behind the high price tag. So today, we’re taking a look at this brand to see if their products can offer comparable results and whether it’s worth checking out.

Pearlessence offers a variety of skin care products, many of which are inspired by the higher end luxury products on the market. For example, their Coconut Water Hydrating Facial Mist offers some of the same key ingredients as more well known products like Herbivore’s Rose Hibiscus Spray or the Mario Badescu Facial Spray. While they are by no means identical, you can expect a similar effect overall.

Below we’ll discuss the key ingredients found in the best selling Pearlessence skin care products: Aloe + Charcoal Detoxifying Mask, Rosehip Balancing Facial Oil, and the 24k Gold Peptide Infusion Illuminating Facial Serum.

Pearlessence Aloe + Charcoal Detoxifying Mask is a clay mask that includes activated charcoal and aloe vera leaf juice as key ingredients. Activated charcoal works by trapping toxins and impurities in its millions of tiny pores. Rather than absorbing the toxins, however, activated charcoal works through adsorption (the chemical reaction where elements bind to a surface). Thus, activated charcoal helps to purify and detoxify the skin. Aloe vera leaf juice helps to soothe and hydrate the skin. Lastly, this mask contains two types of natural clays: kaolin and bentonite. These clays both have excellent absorption properties, which means they can absorb excess oil from the pores and help to reduce shine. They also function as gentle abrasives that can exfoliate the top layers of skin, removing any accumulated dead skin cells to reveal a brighter, smoother complexion. 

Pearlessence Rosehip Balancing Facial Oil contains only four ingredients: soybean oil, rosehip oil, tocopherol (vitamin E), and fragrance. Soybean oil provides strong antioxidant benefits due to the high concentration of vitamin E and essential fatty acids. Antioxidants help the skin to combat free radicals, the unstable molecules that contribute to the formation of premature wrinkles and fine lines on the skin. Rosehip oil is a rich source of beta carotene and all-trans retinoic acid, which both promote regeneration in the outer layers of the skin. This improves skin texture and reduces the appearance of lines and wrinkles. In addition, rosehip seed oil has a high content of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), which is known to improve the skin’s barrier function and calm inflammation. 

The formulation of Pearlessence 24k Gold Peptide Infusion Illuminating Facial Serum is pretty disappointing because it contains a high concentration of denatured alcohol. While denatured alcohol will help to temporarily degrease oily skin, it can actually increase oiliness over time. Thus, the immediate de-greasing effect is eventually counteracted, prompting your oily skin to look even more shiny and prone to breakouts. Plus, denatured alcohol is well known to cause skin irritation and disruption of the skin barrier. Aside from the high concentration of denatured alcohol, the 24k Gold Peptide Infusion Illuminating Facial Serum features key ingredients like gold and two types of anti-aging peptides.
