Key formulation
As mentioned above, the key ingredient that can be found throughout the Lavelier Skin Care line is Corallina officinalis (red coral seaweed).
Corallina officinalis is a species of red seaweed that forms calcium carbonate deposits within its cells, making this seaweed very rigid. It can be ground into a fine powder and incorporated into skin care products, where it functions as an exfoliant. Using products with Corallina officinalis extract will gently and safely remove dead and loose cells from the skin surface, resulting in a brighter complexion.
The high concentration of calcium found in Corallina officinalis extract helps to maintain the skin’s barrier function since calcium is known to regulate lipid barrier processes. Calcium also controls the rate of cell division in the epidermis. High concentrations of upper epidermal calcium thereby cause rapid cell turnover, which results in skin that appears healthier with less imperfections (i.e. wrinkles, age spots, etc.)
Another unique ingredient that can be found in several Lavelier Skin Care formulations is Fagus sylvatica (beech) bud extract. Beech bud extract is a natural anti-aging active derived from Beech Tree buds. By boosting oxygen consumption of the cells, beech bud extract provides energizing, moisturizing, and nourishing properties to the skin.
Besides red coral seaweed and beech bud extract, the Lavelier Skin Care formulations contain effective yet rather basic ingredients. Some of the ingredients that are used throughout the collections include sodium hyaluronate, acetyl hexapeptide-8, retinyl palmitate, green tea leaf extract, and several types of silicones.
Sodium hyaluronate is the salt form of hyaluronic acid, the key molecule involved in skin moisture. Sodium hyaluronate is an exceptional ingredient for adding hydration to the skin. It draws in moisture from the environment and can hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water. Sodium hyaluronate may also help to plump the skin and temporarily reduce signs of aging.
Acetyl hexapeptide-8, also known as argireline, is a six amino acid peptide and is a fragment of SNAP-25 (a substrate of botulinum toxin). It works by limiting the ability of neurotransmitters to activate movement in your facial muscles, for example, when forming facial expressions such as smiling or frowning. By inhibiting the nerves that cause facial muscles to contract, subtle facial expressions are limited and wrinkles are subsequently reduced.
Retinyl palmitate is an ingredient composed of palmitic acid and retinol (Vitamin A) that has the ability to minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, improve uneven skin tone, restore skin firmness, and shrink the appearance of enlarged pores.
Green tea extract comes from the steaming and drying of the Camellia sinensis leaves. One of the most important components in green tea extract is the polyphenol epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). EGCG functions as an antioxidant and helps the skin combat free radicals, the unstable molecules that contribute to the formation of premature wrinkles and fine lines on the skin. Green tea extract also has skin-soothing and anti-inflammatory properties.
Lastly, many of the Lavelier Skin Care formulations contain high concentrations of silicones, such as cyclopentasiloxane and cyclohexasiloxane. Silicones improve the spreadability of a product and impart a silky, smooth skin feel. Silicones also help the skin to retain moisture by forming a thin, invisible film on the surface of skin.
