12.27.22DISCLAIMER

Joyōme is a two-step skin care system that claims to reverse signs of aging through clinically-studied active ingredients, a patented HydraLipid Delivery System, and a patent-pending Microbiome Balancing Complex.

Joyōme is an extension of parent company Plexus, a brand of health and wellness products designed to help you live a happier, healthier lifestyle. The line of Joyōme skin care products is endorsed by Dr. Sarvenaz Zand, a board-certified, world-renowned dermatologist with a dual M.D. from Harvard Medical School and MIT.

Key products and formulation

There are two key Joyōme products: the Illuminating Day Serum and the Intensive Overnight Repair.

Illuminating Day Serum
The Joyōme Illuminating Day Serum is said to rewind visible signs of aging with six clinically demonstrated anti-aging actives. Below we will give you a brief description of each of these ingredients so that you know exactly what’s inside the Joyōme Illuminating Day Serum.

First is argireline peptide. This hexapeptide inhibits neurotransmitter release at the neuromuscular junction, which relaxes muscles and weakens facial contractions. Thus, argireline peptide softens the appearance of crow’s feet, forehead creases, and other expression lines.

Another peptide found in the Illuminating Day Serum is eyeseryl peptide, which reduces the appearance of dark circles and under-eye puffiness. This tetrapeptide has decongesting effects that reduce edema formation, whether that is due to poor lymphatic circulation or high capillary permeability. Additionally, eyeseryl peptide inhibits collagen glycation, which prevents the loss of elasticity and eyebag formation.

The next active ingredient found in the Illuminating Day Serum is Red Clover Extract, which helps to control excess oil as well as minimize the appearance of pores. Red Clover slows the process of skin aging due to its estrogen-like effects and helps to maintain youthful and vibrant skin.

The Illuminating Day Serum also contain niacinamide, the amide form of vitamin B3. Niacinamide exerts antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging effects, as well as improves the epidermal barrier function. In fact, niacinamide is one of the most well-studied antioxidants for use in skincare because its small molecular weight enables it to easily penetrate the skin.

In order to add hydration to your skin throughout the day, the Illuminating Day Serum contains hyaluronic acid. This humectant moisturizer draws moisture into the skin from the environment and has the ability to absorb up to 1,000 times its weight in water. Ingredients that keep the skin hydrated are key to prevent signs of aging as the skin’s water content is what gives it turgor, resilience, and flexibility.

The ceramides in the Illuminating Day Serum help to restore the skin’s natural barrier function. A strong, intact barrier is important to keep moisture in and keep things like allergens, bacteria, and irritants out. When the barrier is weakened, these intruders can pass through the top layer of skin, causing damage that ultimately leads to common skin conditions such as acne, rashes, sensitive skin, and even signs of aging.

Intensive Overnight Repair
Understanding that the skin has different needs during the day and overnight, Joyōme developed their Intensive Overnight Repair serum with five different active ingredients than the Illuminating Day Serum.

The first is hydroxypinacolone retinoate, a retinoid ester. Retinoids have the ability to minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, improve uneven skin tone, increase skin firmness, and shrink the appearance of pores. It is thought that hydroxypinacolone retinoate delivers the same efficacy as other retinoids but without the skin irritation that is a known side effect of retinoids.

Matrixyl peptide is another anti-aging ingredient in the Intensive Overnight Repair. When Matrixyl is applied to the skin it stimulates the lower layers, both collagen and fibronectin, to help them heal themselves. The stimulation causes the skin to produce more collagen, which is how Matrixyl helps to improve skin firmness and elasticity.

The next active ingredient in the Intensive Overnight Repair serum is azelaic acid, which minimizes the appearance of troublesome age spots and brightens complexion. There is actually a prescription form of azelaic acid, with concentrations between 15% and 20%. However, benefits can still be seen with lower concentrations, such as with the Intensive Overnight Repair serum.

You’ll also find an alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA) in the Intensive Overnight Repair serum. This is none other than lactic acid, one of the most popular AHAs used in skin care. Lactic acid exfoliates on the surface of skin by breaking down keratin, the protein found in our skin that causes cells to stick together. Additionally, lactic acid has hydrating properties and can help to brighten an uneven skin tone.

The final active ingredient in the Joyōme Intensive Overnight Repair Serum is bakuchiol, which is thought to behave in a similar way as retinoids. A study published in International Journal of Cosmetic Science found that retinol-like functionality was confirmed for the upregulation of types I and IV collagen and in the stimulation of type III collagen.
