In the beauty world, there are popular products, and products which have earned icon status. The road to becoming a beauty legend is not an easy one, and very few products ever achieve it. Elizabeth Arden’s Eight Hour Cream is one, along with CoverGirl mascara and Cetaphil cleanser. Another beauty legend is Estée Lauder’s Advanced Night Repair, or as it is now officially called, Advanced Night Repair Synchronized Recovery Complex II. Here’s a closer look at the Advanced Night Repair product line, our Advanced Night Repair review, how it works and whether it’s right for you.

What are the Best Skin Care Products of 2020?

What is Advanced Night Repair?

Estée Lauder, the founder of her namesake beauty company, launched Night Repair in 1982. This product is credited with being the industry’s first serum. The concept behind Night Repair is that the best time to repair and heal the skin is while you sleep. Night Repair was formulated to allow skin to do the maximum amount of repair at night.

The formula for Night Repair is a lightweight fluid which we now call a serum. The thin, lightweight texture of the serum meant that it could easily penetrate the skin’s surface. The serum was packaged in a brown apothecary-style bottle which helped protect the formula from light – at the time, all of these were breakthrough concepts. Estée Lauder also formulated Night Repair with hyaluronic acid, and is credited with being one of the first beauty companies to use this ingredient which is now considered standard.

How Did Night Repair Change?

Since debuting in 1982, Night Repair has gone through a few formula updates. Advanced Night Repair was launched in 2009 and the new formula contained Chronolux Technology which Estée Lauder says supports the skin’s natural repair processes to help reduce the signs of aging, such as fine lines. Advanced Night repair has scooped up plenty of awards, including an InStyle Best Beauty Award and Allure’s Reader’s Choice Award in 2015 and 2016. In 2012, to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Advanced Night Repair was celebrated with a limited edition bottle. The product has two popular hashtags on social media: #advancednightrepair and #littlebrownbottle.

How Does Advanced Night Repair Work?

The latest Advanced Repair formula is called Advanced Night Repair Synchronized Recovery Complex II. According to Estée Lauder, the serum is designed to hydrate the skin and give it a dose of radiance. The peach colored fluid is powered by ChronoluxCB Technology to help reduce the signs of aging. The ChronoluxCB technology is thought to produce results over a month. The concept is that the serum works by stimulating the skin’s reparative processes, which then minimizes the appearance of wrinkles and lines.

What Does Advanced Night Repair Do?

According to Estée Lauder, Advanced Night Repair is suitable for all skin types and helps minimize the signs of aging. The oil free, fragrance-free formula helps tackle dehydration and dull skin and also helps prevent fine lines from forming. The formula is patented until 2033.

How Should Advanced Night Repair Be Applied?

Advanced Night Repair should be used at bedtime, and applied to clean skin before moisturizer. The company suggests using several drops and smoothing it all over the face. Estée Lauder recommends applying the serum in a “nightly ritual” that involves applying a drop on each fingertip of one hand, then touching the fingertips of both hands together. The last step is to massage the serum over the face and neck, starting at the center, and moving outward.

What Ingredients are in Advanced Night Repair Synchronized Recovery Complex II?

The serum contains hydrating hyaluronic acid, which acts like a moisturize magnet and can hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water; algae and yeast extracts which are thought to encourage cell turnover; and alkyl guanine transferase which helps to brighten the skin. Rounding out the ingredients list is bifida ferment lysate, a probiotic made from sugars. It is thought to improve the skin barrier function. Advanced Night Repair also contains the probiotic lactobacillus ferment, which helps to exfoliate the skin and encourage cell turnover. The serum also contains lubricants and other skin softening ingredients, as well as the peptide Tripeptide-32 which is thought to help with skin repair.

What Are Other Products in the Advanced Recovery Line?

Advanced Night Repair has expanded to include a wide range of products. Here’s a closer look.

Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair Eye – This serum is designed to be used twice a day (morning and night) and is meant to help reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, dark circles and dryness around the eyes.

Advanced Night Repair Intensive Recovery Ampoules –An ampoule contains a precise dosage of serum, and is meant to be applied after the Advanced Night Repair serum when skin needs an extra boost of hydration and help.

Advanced Night Micro Cleansing Balm – This lightweight balm melts into a cleansing oil when massaged over the skin, then becomes an emulsion when mixed with water. It is designed to clean the skin and whisk away any traces of makeup.

Advanced Night Repair Concentrated Recovery PowerFoil Mask – Apply this mask before bed time or before a night out. The foil mask is soaked with hyaluronic acid and ChronoluxCB technologies to deliver hydration and a glow.

Advanced Night Repair Concentrated Recovery Eye Mask – Eye masks are designed to give a targeted boost of moisture to the eye area. This one contains 20 times the regular amount of ChronoluxCB repair ingredient.

How Much Does Advanced Night Repair Cost?

Advanced Night Repair products are certainly on the pricier side. The classic Advanced Night Repair Synchronized Recovery Complex II ranges from $70-$100, while the Micro Cleansing Foam is $32. The Ampoules retail for $115 and the Foil Mask is $82 for four masks.

Does Advanced Night Repair Work?

When judging if a product works, it’s always important to keep in mind that everyone’s skin reacts differently. One person’s go-to product may do nothing for someone else, so a little trial and error is always needed.

According to Estée Lauder, more than 75% of women felt their skin looked more youthful in just 4 weeks of using Advanced Night Repair, and reported that their skin feels smoother, hydrated, stronger. The company says 2% felt their skin was immediately hydrated while 83% felt their skin looked healthier, fresher, more rested in just four weeks.

On Sephora’s website, customers give it 4.5 stars from 539 reviews, and the product has garnered 70,000 “loves.” Customer feedback includes “I have oily skin and after I started using this brand I quit my dermatologist. This does great with my skin and I use it every single night after using the foaming face wash. All the women in my family use it now! And “I got this as a sample and I LOVE it! I will be buying it when the sample is gone. It is a little expensive, but if it works…why buy other products that don’t? Great for face and neck. Firms and smooths.”

Those who don’t like it say that the product simply didn’t do anything for their skin. “I am not impressed with this serum, especially for the price. I’ve been using it for five months and haven’t seen any noticeable improvements” and “I used the full 1.7 oz over 3 months every night after cleansing and noticed no difference. Do not recommend and will never repurchase.”

The team at Beautypedia give it a mixed review. “And if you’re wondering whether you should finally try Advanced Night Repair, wonder no more: this is a good serum though not among the best out there, and certainly not for what Lauder is charging.

What Are Some Alternatives to Advanced Night Repair?

Advanced Night Repair may not work for everyone, especially at such a high price point. Luckily it’s not the only option for helping to reduce the signs of aging. But if you’re looking for a well rounded skincare line, there are a few other brands to consider.

Formulyst’s philosophy is long-term and effective skincare. The brand wants to help its customers achieve their best looking skin, rather than covering it up with makeup. The comprehensive line of products targets everything from wrinkles to dark spots and dry skin. Some of the products designed to help improve skin’s texture include Formulyst Retexturing and Perfecting Serum. The serum is powered by gentle but effective alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) which dissolves dead skin cells, leaving behind fresher, smoother looking skin.

When it comes to fighting wrinkles, there’s one ingredient that is the gold standard– retinol, a vitamin A derivative. Retinol is the key ingredient in Formulyst’s Anti-Aging Night Cream. What makes this formula different is that it contains a high dose of retinol but it’s also packed with ultra-soothing and hydrating safflower seed oil and jojoba to lock moisture in and soothe the skin.

If you like the simplicity of a skincare kit, consider Advanced Dermatology. This no nonsense brand offers a pared down approach to skincare. The packaging is simple and streamlined, and the products bring skincare back to the basics. The kit contains just six essential items including a daily cleanser; serum; anti-wrinkle firming treatment; night cream; day cream and an eye cream. In other words, everything you need to achieve your best possible looking skin.

Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair Eye Serum

Estée Lauder is a company of humble beginnings. Josephine Esther “Estée” Lauder, the founder, started creating her own skin care products as a teenager and selling them at a local hair salon. Today, Estée Lauder is an multinational manufacturer and marketer of prestige skincare, makeup, fragrance and hair care products, based in Midtown Manhattan, New York City. One of the brand’s best selling products is the Advanced Night Repair Eye Serum, which this review will cover in detail below.

What is it?

The Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair Eye Serum is a lightweight, hydrating serum that is formulated with many beneficial ingredients to leave the eye area feeling soothed and refreshed. Did you know that eye serums are often more effective than eye creams? This is because the concentrations in serums are meant to penetrate the skin faster and easier than creams since they’re not diluted with heavy moisturizers. The results you can expect from using this serum include diminished appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, dryness, and dark circles around the eyes. Estée Lauder says this serum will “reignite the youthful light of your eyes.”

    Who is it for?

The Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair Eye Serum is suitable for all skin types. It is ideal for those with multiple signs of eye aging, such as dullness, dryness, fine lines, wrinkles, and dark circles. It is both dermatologist and ophthalmologist-tested as well as fragrance free. Additionally, the Advanced Night Repair Eye Serum can be used by those with acne prone skin as this formula is non-comedogenic (it won’t clog pores).

    Formulation Insight

Interestingly, the Advanced Night Repair Eye Serum formulation does not differ much from Estée Lauder’s Advanced Night Repair Face Serum. The main differences are the addition of a triglyceride for more moisture and the inclusion of mineral pigments to give the skin around the eyes a subtle radiance. The effect of the mineral pigments can help to temporarily reduce the appearance of dark circles under eyes. Additionally, Estée Lauder added a silicone to the eye serum to give your skin a smooth, silky feel. Known as dimethicone, this ingredient is a silicon-based polymer that can prevent water loss by forming a protective barrier on top of the skin. Like other silicones, dimethicone can also give the skin a temporary plump look by filling in fine lines and wrinkles. Dimethicone also provides a significant amount of emollience and coverage to the skin without feeling heavy.

Another key ingredient in the Advanced Night Repair Eye Serum that works to improve the delicate skin around your eyes is caffeine. Caffeine cuts down on inflammation, boosts circulation, repairs DNA, soothes sun damage, and reduces redness from irritation. As a natural stimulant, caffeine causes vasoconstriction (constriction of the blood vessels) when applied to the skin, which reduces any eye puffiness or dark circles. This happens because the constricting effect pushes blood back into the main circulatory system, rather than the small vessels right underneath the skin. Additionally, vasoconstriction can firm the skin due to the removal of excess fluids and possible stimulation of the lymphatic drainage system.

Hyaluronic acid is found in almost every moisturizer and anti-aging skin care product on the market today due to its intense hydration properties. In fact, hyaluronic acid is the key molecule involved in skin moisture since it is capable of holding up to 1,000 times its weight in water. The Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair Eye Serum contains sodium hyaluronate, the water-soluble sodium salt form of hyaluronic acid. Sodium hyaluronate is sometimes used instead of hyaluronic acid in skincare products due to its greater chemical stability. It is an effective humectant type moisturizer, which means it is able to draw in moisture from the environment and help the skin retain it. Keeping the delicate skin around the eyes moisturized is very important because as skin loses moisture it begins to show signs of aging, like fine lines, wrinkles, and sagging skin.

    How to use

Even though the Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair Eye Serum is called a night serum, the instructions for this product on the Estée Lauder website say to apply it both morning and night to clean skin around the eye area. This product can also be mixed with concealer, then applied to the undereye area for an instant bright-eyed look.

    Reviews

Out of 237 reviews on the Estée Lauder website, the Advanced Night Repair Eye Serum has received an average of 4.7 out of 5 stars with 97% of reviewers saying they would recommend this product to a friend. Those who have tried this eye serum love that it is gentle enough for the fragile skin around the eyes while also being effective. Results that have been reported from using this Estée Lauder product include improved skin hydration and a reduction in the appearance of dark circles under eyes as well as crow’s feet. The few negative reviews for this product say that the texture is very thin, almost runny. This makes sense, however, since it is an eye serum and not a cream. Furthermore, several reviews mention that this product does take some time to start producing results, sometimes more than a month.

In sum, the Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair Eye Serum is a lightweight, hydrating serum that has the power to reduce multiple signs of eye aging, such as dullness, dryness, fine lines, wrinkles, and dark circles.

started using Estee Lauder products at age 14, and I’m 67 now. Advanced night repair has gone through so many changes. The one out today is not as effective as the original. I’m disappointed in it. I’m looking for something different.

I really don’t see why this product is so highly rated. People raving over the “divine” fragrance, it has not got not a brilliant smell and people saying their skin feel’s so wonderful. If I hadn’t bought it from John Lewis i would have thought I had bought a fake product. I have been using it for the last couple of weeks and there has been no visible difference. in fact I would say that my skin feels a bit tight. I stopped using my original serum to give the Estee Lauder night repair a fair chance. but personally I felt my skin was in better condition before using this. I had high hopes for this product, I even bought the large 50ml size. but I will be going back to my original – cheaper serums. If I do feel or see any benefit in the future I will up-date my review.

Tried Estée Lauder’s advanced night repair for the first time. Cleansed first with Ponds cold cream, then applied the night repair serum, then my usual night cream. Very soon afterwards my face felt as if it was irritated and burning. I quickly washed my face again. My skin stopped burning but still feels a bit irritated. I’m suspecting the retinol, as retinol most certainly can be irritating I have read. I think I’m going to stick to my usual Ponds moisturizer with drops of pure Rose hip seed oil mixed in. Rose hip seed oil is a source of natural retinol ( vitamin A) , and has a less irritating ‘exfoliating’ effect than chemically produced retinol. So for the price, this expensive night cream was not a ‘ go’ for me.

I wondered if you could help as last year I started getting allergy rash on my chest and neck but eliminated everything i could think of and it eventually dissapeared but i never found out what caused it. Last night however i tried estee lauder advanced night repair serum for the first time and within 30 minutes my neck started itching and a hot rash appeared so i washed itcoff straight away and today it seems a lot better. I am not blaming your product for anything at all but wondered if you had any idea what ingredient may have caused this as i have used your other products without a problem and am trying to find out what i may be allergic to.

    Thankyou
