In the beauty world, there are popular products, and products which have earned icon status. The road to becoming a beauty legend is not an easy one, and very few products ever achieve it. Elizabeth Arden’s Eight Hour Cream is one, along with CoverGirl mascara and Cetaphil cleanser. Another beauty legend is Estée Lauder’s Advanced Night Repair, or as it is now officially called, Advanced Night Repair Synchronized Recovery Complex II. Here’s a closer look at the Advanced Night Repair product line, our Advanced Night Repair review, how it works and whether it’s right for you.
What is Advanced Night Repair?
Estée Lauder, the founder of her namesake beauty company, launched Night Repair in 1982. This product is credited with being the industry’s first serum. The concept behind Night Repair is that the best time to repair and heal the skin is while you sleep. Night Repair was formulated to allow skin to do the maximum amount of repair at night.
The formula for Night Repair is a lightweight fluid which we now call a serum. The thin, lightweight texture of the serum meant that it could easily penetrate the skin’s surface. The serum was packaged in a brown apothecary-style bottle which helped protect the formula from light – at the time, all of these were breakthrough concepts. Estée Lauder also formulated Night Repair with hyaluronic acid, and is credited with being one of the first beauty companies to use this ingredient which is now considered standard.
How Did Night Repair Change?
Since debuting in 1982, Night Repair has gone through a few formula updates. Advanced Night Repair was launched in 2009 and the new formula contained Chronolux Technology which Estée Lauder says supports the skin’s natural repair processes to help reduce the signs of aging, such as fine lines. Advanced Night repair has scooped up plenty of awards, including an InStyle Best Beauty Award and Allure’s Reader’s Choice Award in 2015 and 2016. In 2012, to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Advanced Night Repair was celebrated with a limited edition bottle. The product has two popular hashtags on social media: #advancednightrepair and #littlebrownbottle.
How Does Advanced Night Repair Work?
The latest Advanced Repair formula is called Advanced Night Repair Synchronized Recovery Complex II. According to Estée Lauder, the serum is designed to hydrate the skin and give it a dose of radiance. The peach colored fluid is powered by ChronoluxCB Technology to help reduce the signs of aging. The ChronoluxCB technology is thought to produce results over a month. The concept is that the serum works by stimulating the skin’s reparative processes, which then minimizes the appearance of wrinkles and lines.
What Does Advanced Night Repair Do?
According to Estée Lauder, Advanced Night Repair is suitable for all skin types and helps minimize the signs of aging. The oil free, fragrance-free formula helps tackle dehydration and dull skin and also helps prevent fine lines from forming. The formula is patented until 2033.
How Should Advanced Night Repair Be Applied?
Advanced Night Repair should be used at bedtime, and applied to clean skin before moisturizer. The company suggests using several drops and smoothing it all over the face. Estée Lauder recommends applying the serum in a “nightly ritual” that involves applying a drop on each fingertip of one hand, then touching the fingertips of both hands together. The last step is to massage the serum over the face and neck, starting at the center, and moving outward.
What Ingredients are in Advanced Night Repair Synchronized Recovery Complex II?
The serum contains hydrating hyaluronic acid, which acts like a moisturize magnet and can hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water; algae and yeast extracts which are thought to encourage cell turnover; and alkyl guanine transferase which helps to brighten the skin. Rounding out the ingredients list is bifida ferment lysate, a probiotic made from sugars. It is thought to improve the skin barrier function. Advanced Night Repair also contains the probiotic lactobacillus ferment, which helps to exfoliate the skin and encourage cell turnover. The serum also contains lubricants and other skin softening ingredients, as well as the peptide Tripeptide-32 which is thought to help with skin repair.

Does Advanced Night Repair Work?
When judging if a product works, it’s always important to keep in mind that everyone’s skin reacts differently. One person’s go-to product may do nothing for someone else, so a little trial and error is always needed.
According to Estée Lauder, more than 75% of women felt their skin looked more youthful in just 4 weeks of using Advanced Night Repair, and reported that their skin feels smoother, hydrated, stronger. The company says 2% felt their skin was immediately hydrated while 83% felt their skin looked healthier, fresher, more rested in just four weeks.
On Sephora’s website, customers give it 4.5 stars from 539 reviews, and the product has garnered 70,000 “loves.” Customer feedback includes “I have oily skin and after I started using this brand I quit my dermatologist. This does great with my skin and I use it every single night after using the foaming face wash. All the women in my family use it now! And “I got this as a sample and I LOVE it! I will be buying it when the sample is gone. It is a little expensive, but if it works…why buy other products that don’t? Great for face and neck. Firms and smooths.”
Those who don’t like it say that the product simply didn’t do anything for their skin. “I am not impressed with this serum, especially for the price. I’ve been using it for five months and haven’t seen any noticeable improvements” and “I used the full 1.7 oz over 3 months every night after cleansing and noticed no difference. Do not recommend and will never repurchase.”
The team at Beautypedia give it a mixed review. “And if you’re wondering whether you should finally try Advanced Night Repair, wonder no more: this is a good serum though not among the best out there, and certainly not for what Lauder is charging.
What Are Some Alternatives to Advanced Night Repair?
Advanced Night Repair may not work for everyone, especially at such a high price point. Luckily it’s not the only option for helping to reduce the signs of aging. But if you’re looking for a well rounded skincare line, there are a few other brands to consider.
Formulyst’s philosophy is long-term and effective skincare. The brand wants to help its customers achieve their best looking skin, rather than covering it up with makeup. The comprehensive line of products targets everything from wrinkles to dark spots and dry skin. Some of the products designed to help improve skin’s texture include Formulyst Retexturing and Perfecting Serum. The serum is powered by gentle but effective alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) which dissolves dead skin cells, leaving behind fresher, smoother looking skin.
When it comes to fighting wrinkles, there’s one ingredient that is the gold standard– retinol, a vitamin A derivative. Retinol is the key ingredient in Formulyst’s Anti-Aging Night Cream. What makes this formula different is that it contains a high dose of retinol but it’s also packed with ultra-soothing and hydrating safflower seed oil and jojoba to lock moisture in and soothe the skin.
If you like the simplicity of a skincare kit, consider Advanced Dermatology. This no nonsense brand offers a pared down approach to skincare. The packaging is simple and streamlined, and the products bring skincare back to the basics. The kit contains just six essential items including a daily cleanser; serum; anti-wrinkle firming treatment; night cream; day cream and an eye cream. In other words, everything you need to achieve your best possible looking skin.
