Yellow 5 is a synthetic lemon yellow azo dye. Other names for Yellow 5 include tartrazine, CI 19140, E Number E102, and FD&C Yellow 5. It is FDA-approved for use in food, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics. Yellow 5 can be found in a variety of cosmetics and personal care products, including liquid and bar soaps, creams and lotions, perfumes, shampoo, conditioners, face and eye makeup, lipstick, nail polish, tanning lotion, mouthwash, and toothpaste. It provides a lemon yellow shade to these products. There are concerns about the safety of yellow 5 since it has been linked to ADHD, asthma, migraines, thyroid cancer, anxiety, clinical depression, blurred vision, and itchy skin.
