Rosa moschata, also known as the musk rose, is a species of rose which has long been in cultivation. Like other roses, Rosa moschata produces a bright red-orange seed known as a hip. Oil can be extracted from the hips, resulting in Rosa moschata (rosehip) seed oil. This oil is a popular ingredient in skin care products because it contains complexion-brightening vitamin C, carotenoids, and may even have some protective properties against ultraviolet light.

Trans retinoic acid (an acid of vitamin A) is one of the main bioactive compounds in Rosa moschata seed oil. Trans retinoic acid stimulates cellular regeneration and collagen production within the skin. This improves skin texture and reduces the appearance of lines and wrinkles, which is why Rosa moschata seed oil is often used in anti-aging skin care products. Rosa moschata seed oil also has a high content of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA). Topical application of GLA is known to improve the skin’s barrier function. In addition, those with skin disorders such as eczema and psoriasis cannot effectively convert linoleic acid to GLA. Therefore, the use of Rosa moschata seed oil is very beneficial for those with inflammatory skin disorders.
