Opuntia, commonly called prickly pear, is a genus in the cactus family, Cactaceae, that has about a dozen species, including Opuntia coccinellifera. All species have flat, fleshy pads that look like large leaves. The pads are actually modified branches or stems that serve several functions, including water storage and flower production. The flowers can be red, yellow, or purple.
