Methyl dihydrojasmonate, also known as hedione, is an aroma compound that has a delicate floral scent similar to jasmine. It is a member of the fragrance structural group ketones cyclopentenones. It is a colorless or pale yellow liquid. In cosmetics and personal care products, methyl dihydrojasmonate is used as a fragrance ingredient and masking agent. A masking agent is used to disguise the natural smell of the active ingredients, especially those that have an unpleasant smell. Sometimes, a masking agent can make a product smell so “clean” that consumers think the product is fragrance-free. According to EWG’s Skin Deep Cosmetic Database, methyl dihydrojasmonate is considered to be safe as used in cosmetics and personal care products, however, there is limited available data on this ingredient.
