Lithium Magnesium Sodium Silicate

01.11.19 AD DISCLOSURE

Lithium magnesium sodium silicate is a synthetic silica-based clay composed of lithium, magnesium, and sodium. In cosmetics and personal care products, lithium magnesium sodium silicate functions as a viscosity increasing agent, bulking agent, and absorbent. The term viscosity corresponds to the concept of “thickness”, for example, honey has a higher viscosity than water. Therefore, as a viscosity increasing agent, lithium magnesium sodium silicate works to thicken formulations in order to make a product less runny and easier to spread. Furthermore, since lithium magnesium sodium silicate is a non-reactive, solid ingredient, it can also be used as a bulking agent in cosmetic formulations. Bulking agents are used to dilute other solids or to increase the volume of a product. Lastly, lithium magnesium sodium silicate possesses absorbent properties. After topical application, it can absorb excess oil from the skin’s surface and draw out oil, dirt, and other impurities from the pores.
