Yellow 6 is a synthetic petroleum-derived orange azo dye. Other names for Yellow 6 include CI 15985 and Sunset Yellow FCF. Additionally, when added to foods sold in the United States it is known as FD&C Yellow 6; when sold in Europe, it is denoted by E Number E110. It is FDA-approved for use in food, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics. The acceptable daily intake of Yellow 6 is 0 to 4 mg/kg under both EU and WHO/FAO guidelines. Yellow 6 has no carcinogenicity, genotoxicity, or developmental toxicity in the amounts at which it is used. Yellow 6 is used in a wide variety of cosmetics and personal care products, including makeup, bath products, nail care products and suntan products. It provides a reddish-orange shade to these products.
