Althaea officinalis, also known as the common marshmallow, is a perennial species native to Europe, Western Asia, and North Africa. Its leaves, flowers, and roots have been used in traditional herbal medicine. This use in reflected in the name of the genus, Althaea, which derives from the Greek word althein, meaning “to heal”.
