Tatcha skincare was inspired by the beauty and skincare routines of geishas, with many of their products still utilizing the same ingredients that have been used for centuries. Today, the brand still holds true to many of those same principles, and create products with a unique, ‘less is more approach’. But how exactly do these products work? Today we’re looking at one of their treatment products in particular, the Essence, to get all the details on their formulation and the overall philosophy behind the product. So without further adieu, let’s get started!
Who Is the Tatcha Essence For?
The Tatcha Essence was designed for those who are looking for a boost of radiance and hydration. With that said however, the formula is fairly gentle and can actually be used by all skin types.
The Essence
The Essence from Tatcha was inspired by essences that are found much more commonly in Asian skincare. This product is a hybrid between a hydrating toner and a serum, creating a more viscous liquid that is packed with beneficial antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and active ingredients. Essences, or lotions as they are sometimes referred to as, are typically applied following your toner and before your treatment serums in order to create light, but effective layers of hydration. This helps to effectively moisturize your skin without the risk of clogging your pores.
This particular Essence was intended to be used as a resurfacing skin softener. Because of this, the product is best suited for those who are concerned with uneven skin texture, fine lines and wrinkles as well as premature aging. Some essences can often contain low dosages of more intense active ingredients, which can help to gently, yet effectively soften and smooth the skin
But it’s not just the type of product that was inspired by traditional Asian skincare practices, but the ingredients as well. This product contains 98.7% Hadasei-3, which is a blend of ingredients that is unique to Tatcha Skin Care. This technology is made up of a blend of japanese superfoods, which are then fermented to increase their potency and efficacy. During the fermentation process, this blend also creates a low dosage of lactic acid, which gives this product its unique resurfacing qualities. All together, this japanese inspired blends helps to gently resurface your skin, while also deeply hydrating. Plus the resurfacing agents in this product are so gentle that you can use this product every day without the danger of over-exfoliating your skin.
Formula Focus
Like many other essences, the formula behind this product is surprisingly simple. In fact, it only contains 8 ingredients. This makes the Essence an excellent option for those with sensitive or reactive skin, as well as those who are ingredient conscious and like to look for more natural ingredients in their skin care products. Along with the simple formula, this product is completely oil-free, non-comedogenic, dermatologist tested and cruelty free. This product is also formulated without mineral oil, synthetic fragrances, sulfate detergents, parabens, urea, DEA, TEA or phthalates.
Looking at what is included in this formula, the base of the Essence from Tatcha skincare is almost entirely made up of Hadasei-3. This is a blend of green tea, rice and algae extracts that have undergone a fermentation process to boost their efficacy. These three ingredients have been used in japanese skincare for centuries, and for good reason. Green tea is an incredibly antioxidant rich ingredient, which can help promote healthy skin, prevent sun damage and ward off against free radicals as well. Rice or rice water is commonly used as an effective, yet extremely gentle skin softener. Algae has also been used to help restore skins plumpness and smooth texture, and as a whole, is an incredibly nutrient dense ingredient. Together, these three ingredients form a powerhouse blend which can target a wide array of skin concerns regardless of your skin type.
Other notable ingredients in this formula include soy amino acids and yeast extract, both of which contain antioxidants and can help the rest of the formula to fight the first signs of aging.
How to Use The Tatcha Essence
The best way to use the Tatcha Essence is to apply it in the middle of your skincare routine. If you’re using a toner, we recommend applying this product after toner, but before your heavier serums, in order to create light layers of hydration.
