Rodan and Fields Microdermabrasion Paste - The Dermatology Review

Rodan and Fields Microdermabrasion Paste

Rodan + Fields has been a well-known name in skincare for years. As the doctors behind Rodan + Fields, Proactiv, and other notable skincare brands, these two share an incredible amount of expertise. But has this expertise transitioned to their products? Today, we’re looking into one of their most popular products to answer this question. We’ll be taking a microscope to their Microdermabrasion Paste so you can decide for yourself whether this product is worth the investment. So without further adieu, let’s get started!

Who is the Microdermabrasion Paste For?

The Microdermabrasion Paste is a physical exfoliant that is designed to be used a few times a week in order to remove dead skin cells from the surface of the skin. For most skin types, this paste should be gentle enough to be used two to three times a week. But, for those with extra sensitive skin, you may want to look into gentle chemical exfoliants instead. While it may sound counter intuitive, chemical exfoliants like AHA’s and BHA’s can actually be much more mild in comparison to physical scrubs, so if you do have sensitive skin, you may want to use a product like this only once a week or opt for a gentler alternative.

Enhancements Micro-Dermabrasion Paste

The Microdermabrasion Paste from Rodan + Fields is a key component of their Enhancements line, which also features products like the Active Hydration Serum and the Bright Eye Complex. This range is designed to boost the effectiveness of your routine, and as the name would suggest, enhance it. The Micro-Dermabrasion Paste is designed to exfoliate the skin, remove any dead skin cells, and help any additional treatment steps in your routine penetrate the skin more effectively.

When it comes to exfoliation, the two most common methods are physical exfoliants and chemical exfoliants. The Micro-Dermabrasion Paste is a purely physical exfoliant. What this means is that the texture of the paste is scrub-like in consistency, with particles or beads that manually exfoliate the skin. In this cause, the Micro-Dermabrasion Paste is a sugar and salt scrub that, when applied to the skin, gently buffs away the dead skin cells.

Formula Focus

When it comes to exfoliants, the formulas behind them can vary greatly depending on the type of exfoliant your prefer using. Chemical exfoliants tend to feature one or two active ingredients including AHA’s and BHA’s. Because of this, you may see ingredients like glycolic acid, lactic acid, mandelic acid, or salicylic acid. But, most of the time, you won’t find ingredients like this in physical exfoliants. There are some hybrid exfoliants that offer both a gentle mechanical scrub as well as a low percentage of an AHA or BHA, but most, the the Micro-Dermabrasion Paste, are purely physical exfoliants.

When it comes to the ingredients behind scrubs like this, the focus is mainly around creating the idea texture. This is actually very important, both for you own enjoyment of the product, as well as the health of your skin. If a scrub is too abrasive, you take the risk of creating micro-tears in the skin, which can lead to further sensitivity and damage your skin’s barrier.

The Micro-dermabrasion Paste from Rodan + Fields is created with a base of C11-13 Isoparaffin, sodium chloride, cyclopentasiloxane, caprylic triglycerides, and cyclohexasiloxane. Most physical exfoliants at their core are a mix of oils and some sort of exfoliating particle, and the Micro-Dermabrasion Paste is no different. The first ingredient, Isoparaffin, is a form of mineral oil, which helps to moisturize and condition the skin, while the second ingredient is salt, which is the main exfoliating ingredients in this scrub. Other notable ingredients in this product include sugar, which acts as an additional exfoliating agent and Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate, which is a vitamin C derivative.

But, while their are some good ingredients, there are also a few not so great ones. This product does contain baking soda, fragrance and artificial dyes, all of which can be potential irritants. While you may see baking soda as a hack for acne, unfortunately, this can do alot more harm than good. Baking soda can raise the pH of your skin, which can cause a whole host of problems including increased sensitivity, barrier damage and worsening acne. Fragrance and dyes on the other hand, will not cause sensitivity for most, but if you do have sensitive skin, these are two ingredients that you should try your best to avoid. Because you’ll be exfoliating your skin, you may find that your skin is even more sensitive to these types of ingredients, so we do recommend that you patch test this product before incorporating it into your regular routine.

How To Use The Micro-Dermabrasion Paste

Rodan + Fields recommends that you apply this product directly onto your bare, dry skin and massage for 30-60 seconds before rinsing. For those with slightly more sensitive skin, they recommend that you apply the product onto damp skin and slowly add water to bring down the intensity of the scrub.

Review Recap

Unfortunately, Rodan + Fields does not display customer reviews or testimonials on their website, so it’s difficult to find any personal experiences from actual customers. That said, the Micro-Dermabrasion is available on Amazon and does have 16 customer reviews. The overall rating for this product is 4.4 out of 5 stars, and most reviewers said they enjoyed the feeling of their skin following treatment. But we’d love to hear from you!
