Prose Hair and Skin Care Review

SKIN CARE REVIEWS

02.02.24DISCLAIMER

Prose is revolutionizing the beauty industry with its personalized approach to skincare and haircare. The goal behind Prose is simple: replace mass-produced products with made-to-order custom solutions. The result? Truly personalized products and always-custom care for your unique hair and skin.

But does this customized approach deliver results? To find out, we’ll analyze Prose hair and skin care products scientifically, examining the research behind their ingredients.

We’ll also share some Prose reviews so that you can get an idea of what customers really think of these products.

What Is Prose?

Prose is a personalized hair and skin care brand that tailors custom formulas based on your specific needs and preferences.

On the Prose website, you’ll be guided through either a hair or skin “consultation” — aka a detailed questionnaire that gives the brand the details on your unique hair/skin type, as well as your goals and concerns.

The hair consultation considers factors like hair type, texture, condition, location, and water type, along with any specific concerns you may have regarding your hair and scalp.

The skin consultation asks questions about the amount of time you spend outside, your stress levels, your diet, whether your skin is dry, oily, or combination, and more.

Prose Hair Care Products

The collection of Prose hair care products consists of shampoos and conditioners, as well as styling and maintenance products, such as pre-shampoo mask, pre-shampoo scalp mask, hair oil, styling gel, curl cream, dry shampoo, and leave-in conditioner. The brand also offers a dietary supplement to support hair health.

All of the Prose hair care products are custom formulated for your hair type and concerns.

Prose Skin Care Products

At the time of writing this review, there’s only three Prose skin care products, which include a cleanser, serum, and moisturizer.

Just like the Prose hair products, the skin care products are custom formulated for your unique skin type and concerns.

What Are The Ingredients in Prose Hair and Skin Care Products?

Since each Prose hair and skincare product is custom, there’s no way for us to give you the exact details on the key ingredients used in the formulations.

Generally speaking, Prose seems to formulate clean products, excluding the following ingredients from their formulas:

  • Parabens
  • Sulfates
  • Phthalates
  • Mineral oils

Furthermore, the brand’s website shares that they can make your products vegan, silicone-free, dye-free, or fragrance-free.

The website also features an alphabetical library of ingredients that are used in Prose products, which is pretty extensive. After taking a look through the long list, we wanted to discuss a few of the ingredients that caught our attention:

Vitamin C

You may find vitamin C in the form of ascorbyl glucoside used in the Prose skin care products, depending on your custom formula.

As a potent antioxidant, vitamin C protects your skin from environmental free radicals, which are known to damage collagen and other important components in the skin. Damaged collagen manifests as signs of premature skin aging, including wrinkles, lines, and sagging skin.

Furthermore, research suggests that when vitamin C is applied to the skin, it significantly reverses aging-related structural changes by influencing collagen and elastin synthesis.

According to the Indian Dermatology Online Journal, clinical studies have shown that the topical use of vitamin C increases collagen production in both young and aged human skin.

Moreover, vitamin C is well known for its ability to promote a brighter complexion and reduce dark spots by inhibiting melanin synthesis. Melanin, a pigment responsible for skin color, can cause undesirable dark spots known as hyperpigmentation when produced excessively. Vitamin C reduces melanin production by inhibiting tyrosinase, an enzyme necessary for melanin synthesis.

Our favorite Vitamin C serum is Carrot & Stick The Defence Serum. It contains 3 distinct types of Vitamin C that work together to help fight free radical damage. We recommend using it every morning.

Spirulina

Spirulina is a blue-green algae that can be used topically or taken orally to benefit the hair.

It’s rich in various nutrients, including protein, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Interestingly, spirulina contains more beta-carotene (the precursor to vitamin A) than any other substance — 10 times more than carrots! It also contains 5 times as much B12 as raw beef.

Due to its rich supply of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory components, spirulina has become a promising solution to restore scalp balance and regulate sebum production.

According to the ingredient library, spirulina may be used in the Prose hair supplement, as well as the topical products.

Botanical Oils

We noticed there’s quite a few botanical oils that may be used in the Prose hair and skincare products, such as coconut oil, argan oil, and eucalyptus oil, just to name a few.

Coconut oil has a high moisture-retaining capacity, meaning it won’t evaporate or break down easily. Once it’s on the skin, scalp, and hair shaft, it doesn’t let moisture escape easily.

A publication in The Journal of Cosmetic Science compared coconut oil to mineral oil and sunflower oil on the hair, and concluded that coconut oil was the only oil found to reduce the protein loss remarkably for both undamaged and damaged hair when used as a pre-wash and post-wash grooming product.

Argan oil is also used in the Prose hair care products. Argan oil is rich in medium-chain fatty acids, which act as a protective layer for hair. Ultimately, argan oil helps to prevent damage from shampooing and styling while adding shine and taming frizz.

Eucalyptus oil is known for its antimicrobial, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory properties, and may be used in your custom Prose hair treatment, especially if you’re dealing with an irritated scalp.

Bakuchiol

Bakuchiol is the “plant-based alternative to retinol” that may be used in one of your Prose skin care products.

We know what you’re thinking: can bakuchiol really provide the same anti-aging, anti-acne, skin-smoothing effects as retinol?

Firstly, it’s important to understand that bakuchiol and retinol differ structurally and chemically.

Bakuchiol is a seed extract derived from the Ayurvedic Babchi plant.

Retinol, also known as vitamin A, is only naturally found in foods derived from animals. The retinol used in skincare products is produced synthetically in a lab.

While bakuchiol and retinol are quite different, they work similarly when applied to the skin. In fact, bakuchiol has been shown to produce many of the same effects of using retinol, including the ability to diminish the appearance of wrinkles and reduce the effects of sun damage (including uneven skin tone).

One of the main benefits of bakuchiol is that it provides retinol-like effects without irritation.

For example, a 2019 study published in the British Academy of Dermatology compared bakuchiol and retinol in a head-to-head 12-week, double-blind clinical trial on human subjects.

For the study, 44 participants received either a twice-daily 0.5% bakuchiol product or a once-daily 0.5% retinol product. Both groups saw improvements in hyperpigmentation, wrinkles, and redness, and there was no statistically significant difference between their results.

This suggests that using bakuchiol twice a day is as effective as using retinol once a day. Another benefit is that the bakuchiol group reported less skin scaling and flaking than the retinol group.

Another ingredient that provides similar benefits as retinol with less irritation is Hydroxypinacolone Retinoate (HPR). We recommend this retinoid oil serum with HPR.

Prose Hair Reviews

At the time of writing this review, the brand only displays Prose Hair reviews on their website. Additionally, they only display “featured” reviews, meaning they only show positive 5-star reviews.

To get a better picture of what customers really think of these products, we went over to ThingTesting.com to read real customer reviews.

After receiving more than 700 customer reviews, the brand has earned an average rating of 4 out of 5 stars.

There are many 5-star Prose reviews from customers who loved the Prose experience and have noticed that their hair looks and feels healthier.

For example, one review says, “Loved my experience with Prose – I used and tweaked customized formulas for over three years and have put friends and family onto their products. Their customer service is also lovely and responsive!

Another 5-star review says, “This product really transformed my hair. I swear it allowed me to pay for less hair cuts bc it help my hair so healthy.”

However, there are a handful of 1-star Prose reviews, which are mostly from customers who had negative experiences with these products.

For example, one review says, “I tried this product when it first came out and I was really disappointed. I lost SO MUCH hair when I started using this product. I thought it might have been a trust-the-process type of thing so I used it for a month…I did not like it.”

Another 1-star review says, “I received them and used them for about a week (I wash my hair daily). The shampoo left a really weird film on my hair, and the conditioner actually dried out my ends. I couldn’t bare to keep using it.”

Our Verdict

Overall, we like the idea of customized skin and hair care products, but after reading through the Prose reviews, it’s clear that these products don’t work for everyone.

Pros

  • There’s an option to make formulas free from silicones, dyes, and fragrances
  • 30 day money back guarantee
  • Prose is a PETA-approved cruelty-free company
  • Many positive Prose Hair reviews

Cons

  • Several Prose reviews mention negative effects, such as hair loss, dry hair, and breakage

What Are Some Alternatives to Prose Hair and Skincare Products?

Looking for alternatives to Prose hair care products? Below we’ll link to other quality hair care brands that we’ve reviewed:

  • Hair La Vie Review: Hair La Vie offers nutritional supplements, shampoos and conditioners, oils, masks, and various hair treatments for any stage of life and any hair goal.
  • Routine Shampoo and Conditioner Review: Routine Shampoo and Conditioner are formulated with a proprietary blend of plant-based extracts and oils “to ensure you never have another bad hair day”. The brand emphasizes that they formulate clean, simple, and effective products without ever using parabens, sulfates, or phthalates.

If you’re looking for skincare products to address the signs of aging, we recommend Carrot & Stick. Carrot & Stick maximizes the use of powerful ingredients and minimizes the use of superficial ones, resulting in advanced skincare solutions that help promote healthy, more youthful-looking skin.

One serum we recommend is The Repair Serum. The formula contains a proprietary blend of plant-based peptides and neuropeptides that work together to promote smoother, more radiant-looking skin while soothing and brightening botanicals impart an ageless glow.
