Some people have perfect skin. You know the ones- their faces are free from blemishes, dark spots, discoloration and pores are a mere suggestion. But those blessed with flawless skin are the exception rather than the norm. Most of us have imperfect skin that has scars, fine lines and dark spots. Getting impeccable looking skin won’t happen overnight and it takes time, dedication and patience. Here’s how to get your best looking face- and how to fake it in the meantime.

 Figure Out Your Skin Type
The first step in the quest for flawless skin is determining your skin type, which will help narrow down the right products to use in your skincare regimen. Is your face normal, oily, dry, sensitive or a combination? One way to figure out if you truly have oily skin is to wash your face and then wait about 20 minutes. If you blot it, oily skin will leave behind residue. Dry skin may be seasonal so you may need different products for summer and winter.

Try Vitamin C
Flawless complexions look healthy and glowing, and one way to up the radiance is with the antioxidant vitamin C. Vitamin C brightens skin and also protects it against damaging free radicals. Try applying a vitamin C spiked serum every day.

Apply Products in the Right Order
Purchasing the right products for your skin type won’t do you any good if you are applying them in the wrong order. The general rule of thumb is to start with the lightest product, which is usually a serum, and then apply moisturizer before putting on sunscreen.

Add Facial Oil to Your Foundation
If your skin is blotchy, foundation is a great way to even out your complexion. But too much foundation can look heavy and cakey, so add a few drops of facial oil to your foundation. It will make your face look dewy and luminous while still providing coverage where you need it for a flawless face.

Cleanse Correctly
Clean skin is the foundation for healthy skin, but many people don’t do it properly. A tiny squirt of cleanser and half-hearted splashing with water won’t cut it. Squeeze out a dollop of cleanser that is about the size of a quarter and gently massage it into your skin in a circular motion for at least 30 seconds. Rinse with lukewarm water and pat dry with a clean towel.

Re-evaluate Your Diet
If your goal is to achieve your best possible looking skin, it helps to take a holistic approach. What you eat can affect your skin, so skip the sugary, processed food. Fill your plate with real food such as whole grains, lean protein, and plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables. In other words, aim for a healthy, balanced diet.

Treat Pimples Early
One thing that can stand in the way of flawless looking skin is acne. Try to treat pimples as soon as you feel them developing. Spot treat with a drying solution or dab on a product containing salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide.

Never Go to Bed With Makeup On
Many people hit the pillow with a full face of makeup and an accumulation of the day’s sweat and dirt. Please don’t. Falling asleep with an unwashed face can lead to breakouts, bumps and clogged pores. Take the extra few minutes at night to thoroughly wash your face.

Exfoliate
One major obstacle to flawless skin is dead, dry skin cells. Annihilate them with regular exfoliation. There are two ways to exfoliate- manually with a rotating brush, washcloth or a scrub, or chemically with an AHA (alpha hydroxy) or BHA (beta hydroxy) acid which will dissolve dead skin cells. Just be careful not to overdo it.

Carve out Time for Your Evening Routine
If we’re lucky, most of us have approximately 10 minutes to work on our faces in the morning. For the AM, the plan of attack is to protect the skin from the sun, hydrate and apply makeup if wanted. The evening is when you should take the time to treat your skin. Do a thorough cleanse, exfoliation and perhaps toner to rebalance the skin before applying serums and creams that are appropriate for your skin type and any concerns, such as fine lines or dark spots.

Use Retinol
If you’re trying to improve the look and texture of your complexion, it’s hard to beat the power of retinol. This vitamin A derivative works its wonders by boosting skin cell turnover, which means that new skin growth is smoother and it helps fade dark spots and discoloration. Start off slowly with a pea sized amount and see how your skin tolerates it.

Treat Your Lips
Lips normally don’t get the same TLC that your face does, so pamper your pucker accordingly. Lips can easily burn in the sun so lay off the oil based lip balms before heading outdoors, and protect your lips with a lip product containing a high SPF. To make lips soft and pillow, they could also use a little exfoliation. The simplest way to do this is with a toothbrush, or you can buy lip scrubs and exfoliators packed with fruit enzymes.

Stop Shine
Although everyone wants dewy looking skin, anyone with oily skin knows there is a fine line between luminous and too much shine, which can make you look greasy- and cause makeup to slide off your face. To keep the shine at bay, try applying a mattifying moisturizer. Next, applying  a thin layer of primer before applying makeup as it will give cosmetics staying power. Throughout the day, dab your face with oil blotting sheets which soak up excess oil but won’t remove makeup.

Concealer is Your Friend
As you’re waiting for your products to work their magic, a good tube of concealer is one of the best investments for your face. There’s no need to apply foundation all over your face; just add a touch of concealer where you need it, such as under the eyes, around the nostrils where many people have redness, and on any blemishes. Be sure to blend and buff the product into your skin for a seamless look.

Moisturize
Perfect skin looks fresh, dewy and smooth – and you can get one step closer to your ideal skin by keeping it well hydrated. Dry skin looks flaky and dull, but with a dose of moisture, it looks plumped and fresh. Apply moisturizer twice a day and look for nourishing ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, glycerin and oils.

Wear Sunscreen
Exposure to the sun can lead to fine lines, wrinkles, dark spots, and loss of elasticity. If you want to put your best face forward, always wear a broad spectrum SPF sunscreen every single day. Choose a moisturizer with sun protection or buy a lightweight one that doesn’t feel heavy on the face.

Keep Your Face Clean
Although you may religiously wash your face every night, are you also as meticulous about not getting your face contaminated- which can lead to breakouts? Always clean your phone regularly (think about how much time it spends pressed against your face) and wash your makeup sponges and brushes too. Try to keep your hands off your face and regularly wash your pillow case as well the towel you use to dry your face.

Try An Essence
An essence is a key step in Korean and Japanese skincare routines as it preps the skin before applying serum and moisturizer. They also help to boost hydration– and hydrated skin always looks better than dry skin. Just pour some essence into your palm and press it gently on your face.

Take a Break
Sometimes less is more in the quest for perfect skin. Some people can overdo it with retinols, serums, toners, exfoliations and masks so if you’re not seeing results from your current skincare regimen, take a break. Pare it back down to the basics- cleansing, moisturizing and protecting against the sun.

Hit The Pillow Early
Sleep is one of the best things we can do for our bodies, brains and skin but it’s not always easy to get a solid eight hours of sleep. But when we sleep, our bodies switch into repair mode so always make sure you’re giving your body enough time to work its magic. Otherwise you may wake up to dull skin and puffy eyes, along with dark circles.

Treat Yourself to a Mask
A sheet mask is one of the easiest ways to give skin a quick pick me up- with a minimum of fuss and mess. Just choose the right mask for your skin type and concerns, unpeel it and let it soak into your freshly washed face.

Chemical Peel
See a dermatologist or esthetician for a chemical peel, which is a type of exfoliation. Chemical peels can range from mild to a deep, and recovery times vary depending on the intensity of the treatment. This treatments helps improve skin texture as well as discoloration.

Use a Face Roller
That beauty blogger favorite, the face roller, is a quick and easy way to help perk up skin and depuff eyes. A jade or quartz face roller is inexpensive and feels cooling and soothing on the face. The rolling motion is basically a massage, and helps increase circulation, which in turn will depuff the face.

What Are the Best Products for a Flawless Face?

Although makeup can do wonders to help even out skin tone and hide any flaws, the goal should be to use makeup as an enhancement rather than a cover up. To achieve your best looking skin, consider Formulyst. The brand’s philosophy is about protecting and nourishing skin while keeping the signs of aging at bay – along with dark spots and blemishes. Here are a few products to try:

Formulyst Clarifying AHA Cleanser gives skin a thorough clean, whisking away any dirt and makeup but won’t leave faces feeling dry and tight. While cleansing, it also gives skin a gentle exfoliation with alpha hydroxy acids (AHA) derived from citrus and botanical extracts.

Stave off the signs of aging with Formulyst’s Ultimate Youth Concentrate. This silky serum is bio-engineered from plant stem cells and loaded with a concentrated combination of five peptides. The deeply hydrating formula helps soften and smooth skin, and is formulated to minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Although hydroquinone is effective in lightening dark spots, it is also controversial. Some studies indicate it may be a carcinogen and it’s banned in Europe. It’s not the only option for fading dark spots though. Formulyst’s Dark Spot Solutions is powered by HyWhite, which is derived from alpha linolenic acid, an omega-3 fatty acid found in plants. It works to minimize the appearance of dark spots while also hydrating the skin thanks to hyaluronic acid.
