Clinique has been a long standing favorite for those with sensitive, allergy prone, irritated skin. It can be extremely difficult to find products that work for you when you’re constantly battling irritation from fragrances, essential oils, and other common allergens. Because of this, brands like Clinique have been making a conscious effort to eliminate the most common allergens and irritants from their products. So today we’re going to be looking at their moisturizing gels to see how exactly they create their formulas and incorporate ingredients to serve reactive skin types.
Behind the Brand
Clinique has been at the forefront of the beauty industry for decades. Originally started in the 1960’s, Clinique was formed around the idea that great skin wasn’t just down to your genes, but could be improved with skincare.
Today the brand is most well-known for being one of the few allergy-tested and fragrance free luxury skincare and makeup brands. They are available from a variety of retailers including Sephora, Ulta, Macy’s, Nordstrom and more.
Clinique was one of the key brands that popularized the traditional 3-step skincare routine, which included cleansing, toning and moisturizing. Of these three steps, finding the right moisturizer for your skin type and skin concerns can be one of the biggest challenges. Because of this, the brand offers a wide range of moisturizers including their Dramatically Different range and their Moisture Surge line in a variety of formulas.
Dramatically Different Moisturizing Gel
This is one of the most well known products to come from Clinique is their Dramatically Different Moisturizing Gel and Lotion. This range released three separate moisturizers with different textures to suit specific skin types. The Dramatically Different Moisturizing gel, lotion and cream are each formulated to offer hydration and moisture, but at a level that is comfortable and effective for the specific skin types that they’re targeted towards. For example, the moisturizing gel is targeted towards those with oily and acne prone skin due to its oil free formula.
This is the newest line from the brand, and has quickly become a fan favorite in the beauty community. Like the Dramatically Different range, there are several different formulations available for various skin types including a hydrating concentrate, the 72-hour replenishing hydrator, an extended thirst relief moisturizing gel, the intense fortifying hydrator, a facial spray and an overnight mask. The idea with this range is to offer hydration in a variety of different formats, so that you can pick the one that suits your lifestyle, skin type and skin concerns best.
Inside the Ingredients
With a brand like Clinique, what’s not in the ingredients list is almost just as important as what is. As a brand that really caters to sensitive skin types, they make a point to make sure that all of their products and formulations are tested for allergens and are free from fragrances. Since includes fragrances from essential oils, as those can also be sensitizing ingredients for some. With that said, this isn’t a completely natural brand. They do use silicones, dyes, fatty alcohols in come of their products, so if any of those are irritants for you, make sure to ready the ingredients and do a patch test before incorporating into your routine.
Looking at the formulas for the two Clinique moisturizing gel formulas that we just mentioned, there are a number of beneficial ingredients that are included in both options. These include hyaluronic acid and caffeine. These two ingredients moisturize and plump the area, giving you a smoother complexion. Hyaluronic acid has been a hero ingredient for many moisturizers within this brand, due to it’s incredibly hydrating properties. As a humectant, hyaluronic acid has the ability to hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water. This allows for a relatively lightweight formula to still have incredibly hydrating properties, so you don’t have to worry about it clogging your pores. Additionally, caffeine acts as a great soothing agent in both formulas. Caffeine helps to reduce redness and puffiness underneath the eyes, while also reducing any signs of inflammation.
These two moisturizing gels from Clinique have no shortage of positive reviews to go off of. Since the Dramatically Different Moisturizing Gel has been a part of the range for years, the product has over 2500 reviews on the Clinique website, with an overall rating of 4.8 out of 5 stars. The Moisture Surge Moisturizer, while it is a newer product, has also received quite a bit of positive press including 254 reviews on Sephora and an overall rating of 4.6 out of 5. With both products, most reviewers found that their skin was hydrated yet balanced and perfect for all different skin types, from super oily to extra dry.
Overall, Clinique has remained a staple for so many skincare junkies, especially those with sensitive or reactive skin. What are your top picks for sensitive skin? We’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments section below!
